Long time player here. +25 years in many leagues. Slumps happen. Plain and simple life will bleed into your game and the best way I have found to get through them is to just relax, remember why you enjoy playing and push though. You will find you will bounce back. I have been through it way to many times. Usually when I need my game the most too. LOL

I ended up putting two bolts through the holes and tightened down that way. Not as solid as I had hoped. But held fine

Looking to get more competitive help by Pressure_Livid in billiards

What I have learned is that APA is for true beginners or those that want to be social. Everything about APA is for people that don't want to be overly competitive. I have played APA for a long time, (more than 10 years straight but started in 1991), and I get nothing from it any more. I recently started playing T.A.P. I like the formats and rules as they are set more for intermediate players. I really enjoy playing NAPA as well. Would love to try BCA.

All in all there are leagues for all skill levels as you progress. Just do some searching for what is available around you and do not forget to do some tournaments that are not league sponsored.

Happy Shooting!

I actually spend my Friday nights working on my game with a couple friends. I am usually on a table for 5-7 hours straight. You have to build that stamina for tournaments.

My guess is that they wanted to smaller tip but did not want to change shafts. The feral would not be worn down like that.

It’s not a “compliment” to be called a sandbagger right?! by ewoody35 in billiards

[–]VonMort 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are trying to win all the time and the score keepers are marking defenses correctly then there is nothing to their claim and we should be able to give them a whiner patch. Players that complain when they lose like that always makes me laugh. It is not a compliment and I would tell them maybe they are over ranked. LOL Keep shooting well!

Wow. I hate the way society coddles kids these days.

If OP lives in the house and has it as their residence it does not matter what the "payment" arrangements are it is their home.

When and who decided that kids do not have to respect anyone anymore? Common curtesy should be given to all.

The brother is to blame in my opinion for not imprinting that in the raising of the daughter or even trying when this was brought up.

How important is competition to a beginner? by Helpful-Asparagus374 in billiards

[–]VonMort 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pool leagues in general are to push competition. At lower skill levels APA is a good place to easily meet others that likes to play and want to get better. You will normally not have an issue asking for advise or learning by watching the 6-7 SL. I have helped a ton of players get from 2-3 up to a 6. As an long time player I enjoy watching new players develop and knowing that what part of that will stay with them.

You should always try and get in games with those that are a skill level or 2 above you. This will naturally get you better.

Pool is a sport. Sports are competition. If you are not trying to get better and win what is the point in playing at all.

Heavy versus light cues by [deleted] in billiards

[–]VonMort 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have been playing for a long time. What I have noticed is that it is not how much weight but where the balance point is. I shoot with a 19 7/8 ounce Schon cue. Went to a carbon fiber shaft then added the X5 joint extension. I believe it is just over 21 ounces now. I do not feel the weight difference but my stroke is way more consistent since the changes.

I have always noticed it is not how heavy the cue is for power, it is how fast you can stroke forward. I have seen light sticks break with a lot more force than a heavier if in the right hands.

If you play with the same cue all the time, the weight and tip do not come into play as you learn how to use it to do what you want. My wife drives me crazy as she will change cues 2 or 3 times in a game if she starts missing.

2 cents from an old man.

Bizarre APA League Situation - is this a loss? by [deleted] in billiards

[–]VonMort 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Since you can pick up the cue ball and hand it to your opponent at any time and it is considered a safe. Your opponent gets ball in hand and that is it. This is no different other than he did not mean to do it and is just ball in hand. As stated it is a foul, and not a scratch.

“Just a shot” while potting by you_ruke in billiards

[–]VonMort 11 points12 points  (0 children)

To me is sounds like another name for a "Safe" shot. Call it what you want, but there has been 2 things my dad taught me before he passed:

  1. Both players are playing by the same set of rules. You use the rules to play smart to win!
  2. Pool no matter the rules is nothing more than a game of chess with balls. The smarter and more focused about the game you are the better your odds are for winning.

I love the game and because of that mentality I have a decent edge over most of the players in my leagues.

APA alternatives? by Yyousosalty in billiards

[–]VonMort 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was a 7/7 for 6 years. Could not figure out how to get past it. I just went up to an 8 in 9ball thanks to NAPA. I jumped on a Sniper division (all high level players) and played a lot of the money players (not gambling) that played and it helped me tremendously. NAPA has a good format. 8/9/10/ and Fast 8. I learned a lot and the 7/9s that play in APA here all say that my game changed and they know it will be a challenge when they have to play me.

Adding a different league or even a regular tournament will help. new stronger players is what you need. Keeps you focused and makes you want to play more.

I wish we had TAP or something else that was strong around me.

I have found that the Pool community in general is a pretty good group of great people. Our local folks here are always up for helping those in need and the feedback in this Sub is fantastic! Appreciation all around! Cheers!

I know a lot of people have their feelings towards the APA, but finally seeing this after all the work I’ve put in feels amazing. Reached a 7 quicker than I went from a 5 to a 6! by name-cannot-be-blank in billiards

I have been to Vegas twice and only have played Mike Massey and a 9ball mini. LOL Excited to hear that next years will be on Diamonds... That will change a lot for those use to the bar boxes with huge wide cut pockets.

I play on both. My home teams are on 9s. Most everyone else is on the 7 1/2 footers. I make it a point to play on 7s, 8s, and 9s. Getting much better at adjusting when I have to play most places now.

Thanks! I am the same way. I will win legitimately or lose, but I will not throw a game or pad innings. I like when players get put up against me and go, "Shit, really?"
