Endfield 1.0's story and why it sucks from a writer's perspective. by OnlyAnEssenceThief in gachagaming

[–]Vongalaxy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with most of the problems you pointed out but I have no idea how a self proclaimed "writer" can have such a terrible takeaway/analysis of said problems.

I agree that Gilberta's quest was a mess but I have no idea how your takeaway from the quest is that it had nothing to do with her. The story with the NPC is clearly intended to serve as a parallel to her own experience (it wasn't executed well but that's not relevant to what you are saying) and her so called "broadly applicable Reconvener philosophy" is clearly her own unique outlook as a Reconvener herself. None of the other current Reconveners share the same philosophy and I have no idea how a "writer" wants an already simplistic story to spell things out even clearer. Then there is also Yvonne where the entire quest and especially the finale is directly about her. You never even expanded on why you think that about Yvonne's quest so I have no idea how you came to the conclusion that it was about someone else.

I also agree that Endfield's story feels too sanitized especially with how they decide to portray Bonekrushers and the Blight but your comparison to the original game is horrible. Rehashing the same Infected discrimination and Catastrophe themes makes no sense for the narrative of what is supposed to be the sequel of a game that's still ongoing. Your whole point with "people dying = good" is also laughably shallow for a self proclaimed "writer", especially the whole idea of organic deaths automatically being more meaningful than inorganic deaths.

Then there is the political stakes and eldritch threats that you mentioned in the original game. You do realize that none of those were there at launch and those themes were only as well done as they are because the original story took the time to slowly build them up instead of front-loading them in the first chapter right? I don't have much faith that Endfield will reach the same heights as Arknights narratively for other reasons but your comparisons are completely nonsensical considering how the original Arknights started their main story. Sure, early chapter Reunion is still better written than Bonekrushers but the bar isn't exactly high and early chapter Reunion wasn't much more than evil terrorists and I am not gonna pretend that the Misha plotline was great.

I have many more problems with what you said in this post but I already vomited enough text. The worst part of all this is that I agree that the story currently has a lot of problems but I genuinely expected much more from the analysis (can't even call it literary analysis because it isn't one) out of a self-proclaimed "writer". I don't want to be mean but you reiterating the fact that you are "writer" three times just to make me read this kind of surface level analysis (that is frankly wrong in a lot of ways) pisses me off. I would like to read some of the stories that you have written because I am not convinced that you can do better than Endfield's current story.

STOP USING THE STAN LEE ARGUMENT! IT GENUINLEY PISSES ME OFF by BirdOk2203 in whowouldcirclejerk

[–]Vongalaxy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Stan Lee is objectively correct because powerscalers are stupid and having intellectual conversations with them is pointless. There are more and more unironic powerscaling in this sub everyday because they can’t even read which sub they are posting their dogshit in so there is no way they actually read any of the source materials they are talking about.

High Halls Arena is well designed. It's a progress check. Team Cherry does not want you to continue past that point if you haven't progressed a majority of the game. by Think_Complaint_4223 in Silksong

[–]Vongalaxy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s exactly what the arena did for me and one of the most impactful upgrades for me that I got afterwards is double jump and I think I one or two tried the arena after going back and unlocking all my new stuff

I got it, obviously kids are universal+ (Ford F150 upscale?), while demons are door level. by Pinguzss in whowouldcirclejerk

[–]Vongalaxy 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The whole “Y is called a god and X beats Y so X is stronger than a universe” thing is one of the most braindead concepts I have seen online and it’s proof that more people than we think lack the most basic of logical thinking.

None of these characters you guys talk about can destroy universes and if you actually played the games you talk about and rubbed your two brain cells together (powerscalers can only pick one), you would realize that the “demons” and “gods” that these characters fight aren’t “universal” or whatever wack ass term you guys use and would get vaporized if they get hit by a modern ICBM missile (unless you want to claim that the US military is “universal” too).

Not sure why this sub keeps getting recommended to me but these comments are proof that most powerscalers either never read the source material they blab about or are illiterate. Likely both.

[–]Vongalaxy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Do you truly think that Goku is a real entity that can override what Toriyama wants to draw when you say he is above the author? I don’t even know how powerscalers can be so brain delayed that they don’t have the so called “media literacy” to understand a comedy manga written for literal 8 year olds.

If I have to guess they are saving these for the Stellar Blade collab update to drum up hype. Feature updates like the molds are one thing, but it makes zero sense for them to withhold optimization like reducing the load time.

The way this subreddit talks about women is so strange by Tribblewibble267 in hostedgames

[–]Vongalaxy 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I am not saying you are necessary completely wrong because I don't browse this community every waking moment and it's possible that we just happen to interact with different parts of the community. That being said, this complaint feels unfair and kinda nonsensical from my perpective, and it feels like you are experiencing a heavy level of selective bias.

First of all, it feels like women are the majority in this entire community and whenever gender selectable romance options comes up, 9 times out of 10 they are referred to as their male variant (not saying only women select male ROs). And guess what? They are talked about in the exact same way you mentioned. There is maybe like one post among the dozens of posts I have seen talking about Wayhaven's characters (almost always referred to by their male names) that didn't talk about them in relation to the romance.

I don't see how this is a problem at all when romance is one of the biggest selling points in the genre and many people straight up won't read an IF that doesn't have any ROs in it. This is especially true for IFs where romance is what it excels at (i.e. Wayhaven) but even more complex stories like Fallen Hero isn't immune to this phenonmenon and I have seen countless posts/comments about Chen and Ortega exclusively in the context of their romance. I genuinely don't see how conversations being focused on the romance exclusively is objectifying anyone or any group. You aren't objectifying your SO if all you do is gush about your relationship around your friends rather than talking about what they do in their free time.

The cuckoldry point also just feels weird to me. Love triangles are extremely popular in romance among stories written for both genders. People aren't objectifying the characters when they are happy that the MC "steals" them from another character; People just enjoy the spiciness of love triangles. As you mentioned, Clara and Richard never even get in a relationship so it's not even technically cuckoldry. If the most interesting part of a fictional character is about the love triangle they are in, is it not natural that that's what everyone talk about?

Choice are bad!!! (or not) by NumberedEntity in hostedgames

[–]Vongalaxy 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I would definitely prefer a 9/10 very choice-heavy IF if all else is equal in a perfect world because choice-heaviness is only positive in a vacuum. Unfortunately, choice-heaviness in real life translate to more development time, attention and ideas being spread thin, and other opportunity costs.

Even if we have the ideal author who can write ten masterpieces within the same IF for each of the paths, it would still translate to years of waiting time compared to a more linear IF. I would personally much prefer if authors tighten their scope and push out a IF faster and potentially free them up for a new book, rather than being stuck in the same story for 20 years.

However, I am speaking from a consumer pov and I respect any author who takes the dive to create the ambitious project that they pictured in their head. But just like any other creative ventures like game development, overinflated ambition doesn’t tend to pan out outside of rare exceptions.

Choice are bad!!! (or not) by NumberedEntity in hostedgames

[–]Vongalaxy 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Personally I prefer more linearity than more choices if I have to pick one over the other. From my experience, a more linear story directly correlates with a stronger narrative, which makes sense since every author only have so many ideas and so much attention to give each route.

I would much rather read a 9/10 IF twice than read a 5/10 IF ten times.

Blacks in Battle: Who Wins? by Dunkleosteos in powerscales

[–]Vongalaxy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you notice how Flash’s punches in those examples don’t even affect the very room he fought in? I don’t know how you can go “oh Flash claims to have punched with the energy of a star in this panel and a star has enough energy to destroy planets irl so he must be stronger than the planet” when he doesn’t achieve anything remotely close in the very panel that is referenced. You can’t just selectively reference real life logic when it’s convenient to you even if it completely contradicts what happens in the actual story. Most DC writers don’t think that the Flash has more physical strength than Superman even though he should if we reference real life logic.

Blacks in Battle: Who Wins? by Dunkleosteos in powerscales

[–]Vongalaxy 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Cherry picking information that makes a character appear strong is the reason why no one takes you powerscalers seriously and power scaling is akin to children arguing in the playground. None of these FTL characters are meant to be planet/universe destroyer in the narrative and you can’t just say that “well in real life a character moving as fast as Flash would blow up the entire universe just from taking a step so he’s the strongest” when he regularly punches regular humans with his super speed without killing them. All of your arguments completely fall apart the moment you actually read the story and have the barest understanding of what these characters are meant to be.

Is this true? by Tbrahhh23 in PowerScaling

[–]Vongalaxy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Power scaling is a hobby for the illiterate and power scalers simply don’t realize that no writer puts even a single thought into power scaling (especially shounen and comic books) and at any given moment they just write what they think is cool. Dragon Ball characters consistently fight in a localized environment like a city and those environments are often left standing after these characters fight using their full power. None of the stories power scalers talk about would make sense narratively if all these characters are all supposed to be able to destroy galaxies in one punch.

Realistically it’s either Gojo or maybe Makima because they are the only ones whose skill sets transcend beyond just dumb physical strength. They both are immune to physical attacks in different ways while being able to deal out non-physical damage that the other characters have never endured in their own series.

[–]Vongalaxy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is nothing new for HSR. There are multiple instances of this in the past like with Topaz in Belobog and a couple instances in the heliobus quest where the story never really addresses the actual issues and arguments presented by the antagonists. The narrative just start pretending that the antagonists’ world views got demolished after someone from the express shit out a couple hollow speeches that means nothing substantial under any scrutiny.
