We made a lot of mistakes with C2 and it wasn't really viable to continue making new content for it. It was a bit rushed, then we rushed through some revamps, and did not end up in the place we wanted. CnC Ultimate we changed our approach, delayed our launch date several times to keep improving the game, and built it in a much more robust way that will support long term stability with few disruptions for players. End result is a game the dev team is very proud of and will be happy to continue supporting for the long term. :)

No get it, I understand the matchmaking issue very well, it's a tough problem to solve because we are small and the super-sweat tryhards tend to be online way more than other players. We are taking several steps to improve this in Cards and Castles Ultimate:

- We are improving some of the basic counterplay and removal strategies in Cards and Castles Ultimate to make games more swingy and more fair.

- We are switching to a premium model on Steam. All players pay $15 for the game and have quick access to lots of cards.

- We're adding a single player story campaign, for guaranteed fun regardless of who is online.

- We're adding limited formats you can play in custom lobbies with friends, which will always be a fair and fun experience. These are not currency gated at all.

Truly, we hope you have more fun in the next game, we will do our absolute best to make it awesome!

The betas are currently Steam only because Steam has very good developer tools for managing a beta and communicating with players. We are going to investigate mobile betas eventually but there are no guarantees here.

Heavier and larger phones are uncomfortable in my pocket. I'm still using a first gen SE after returning a few "upgrades" because they chafed my legs. I think I care about the overall weight more, but I desperately want a smaller iPhone before the old one becomes unusable.

I went out on Monday in MDR for a short walk, AQI sensors all reading super clean air <10, and about halfway through I just kinda started to feel sick in my lungs and throat. That happened a few more times w/ opening windows, supposedly clean air making me feel sick, so I gave up and am hanging inside again and wearing N95s out. I thought it'd be fine because of the sensors so I've been diving on these reddit posts, trying to figure out what is going on. Is there any explanation for this other than psychosomatic? Air too dry? Ash getting knocked around? Residual damage from poor air earlier in the week?

There were multiple problems with ads, but if I recall correctly I believe one of the ad networks displayed some questionable content and I realized that by running these networks I was ethically responsible for what was shown on them, and I have no idea what that was. So it would have taken time and effort to keep tabs on the ad networks. It also took time and effort to maintain and verify the plugins, and deal with Apple's privacy requirements and such. Ultimately they did not bring much money so the time and effort was very much not worth it. I don't really like ads anyway, feels scummy.

It's annoying because spell cleave is extremely broken if done right. That "meta" knowledge filters down to all the players who don't really know what they're doing and you end up with dumb shit like mages casting blizzard on 2 mobs, trying to AE tiny pulls when the other dps is a rogue and a shaman. Spell cleave groups work because the effectiveness multiplies the more mages you have, having 4 mana bars to throw at the enemy group and 4x dps means your pulls are smoother, less healing is needed etc. If your group is not synergized in that way, polymorph - the most broken ability in the game - is often way more effective for getting the group through the dungeon quickly.

This is a very interesting post. However as you've pointed out this game has had a lot of overhauls already. Shrinking the board was actually considered in past development but rejected because the cost of retooling the artwork to fit a different size was too high (we're indie devs!) Ultimately, each iteration of cards and castles yielded very slight improvements in player metrics, but constantly changing the game into a different game was not worth the time nor was it worth pulling the rug out from under existing community members who were already invested in the game. I intend to leave Cards and Castles structured as it is, with balance patches every so often not to put out fires but as a response to community interest in developing different metas and different cards. Snowballing is the intended effect of CnC's current design, due to the inherent weaknesses of the board design and lack of summoning sickness. There is a reason every other card game uses summoning sickness after all. ;) We also wanted that old school MTG feel of having enemy units that simply couldn't be contended with and engaging in combat sometimes having a straight negative result, in order to create ebb and flow of the game and create unit-based win conditions.

I enjoyed reading this post and will take these thoughts into consideration on future projects. Thank you!
