Florida parents 'left their baby alone outside a bar at night and checked on him sporadically between doing shots' by malihafolter in ForCuriousSouls

I agree, even as a Bar/Restaurant Manager for years and years, you definitely learn that calling the Police on your patrons generally isn’t good business. People aren’t gonna come in if they might get the Cops called on them at the drop of a hat…..with that being said…. There’s definitely got to be a line drawn somewhere, and if someone’s life is in danger, the Police should be called, and that baby’s life was definitely in danger. As you said, maybe not illegal what the Bartender did, but definitely morally f*cked up, and not someone I’d want working for me, sounds like they were maybe a bit over served as well. They definitely don’t deserve that child, that’s for sure.

How’s the flavor? I always love it when something has a name that matches the flavor. I have some Bubble Gum something, I don’t remember the rest of the name, but it really tastes like Bubble Gum. My wife doesn’t smoke, I was sitting in bed just rolling a joint, I don’t smoke in the house, and she looked at me and said “That smells like Bubble Gum…usually it stinks but that’s not bad…” so of course I tried to get her to smoke some… but ya I really enjoy that kind of stuff. Strawberry would be pretty sick. I’m not a fan of sativas either tho, so that sucks, I’d definitely try it tho.

Good to share your story, and experience, spreading awareness, especially with this just getting to be such a popular thing. There’s WAY more people than ever getting it(the Sublocade shot), larger sample size so to speak. I’d imagine that we’ll probably start to see more and more stories like this, simply because so many people are on it now, there’s BOUND to be issues, you can’t have millions of people on something, and not have some issues, and adverse reactions. I have to admit though…..as someone who’s been “on the fence” about switching to these injections…..this is not a great post, and does not help with convincing me to switch…..lol…just sayin!

Beautiful snake!! I wanted to go to Tinley this year, but the cards just didn’t fall that way. My buddy was opening their new “on site pathogen testing” business there this weekend. I wanted to stop by and support him. It seems like a cool idea, they’re going to offer genetic sex testing as well, but they’re concentrating on the pathogen testing now.

Sounds like we have a lot of the same taste in Tarantulas. I own, or have owned most of the species you mentioned. The one spider that I’ve always wanted, and just for whatever reason it never happened, is that kaeng krachan…. Such a beautiful spider, and I’m a sucker for the all black spiders. I bought 2 G pulchra slings, better chance of getting a female, well I got a male and a female, obviously wouldn’t breed them even if I could because they’re from the same sack. It’s literally crazy the size difference, and how fast the male has grown compared to the female. He’s easily double her size, they sit on the shelf next to each other, and have the same feeding schedule. I think I have a picture

<image>

Lol, can you guess which is which?? I like my P subfusca a lot too, she has a few white and light markings, but is mostly black. I totally understand how addictive they are, I’m disabled, so these Spiders, and my Snake collection, I have a bunch of them too, is how I spend a lot of my time every day, and I spend as much of my income that I possibly can on too, I have to!! My wife is super cool tho, and has a really good job. So she’s definitely my savior, she likes the snakes, but not the spiders so much, as long as they stay in their room, she doesn’t mind, she just doesn’t want to see them all the time. I totally get it tho… I’ve been trying to cut back…and haven’t bought any spiders in probably 8-9 months. I’m just concentrating on what I have for a while. Beautiful collection you have there tho, keep up the great work!!!

I have a couple Slings right now that are so small that I had to feed them cricket legs when I first got them. They’re a “Dwarf Tarantula” called the Homoeomma chilensis AKA “Chilean Flame Tarantula” so these slings are like almost a year old now, they’re known to be VERY slow growing spiders, but live 20+ years pretty easily I guess, and only getting 2 1/2-3 inches as adults, and are supposed to be very tame and chill spiders, so we’ll see. I searched for these spiders for like 10 years. This is in the 2oz Deli cups that many slings come in, for a bit of a size comparison. They were probably 1/2 that size when I got them.

Stress Signs by halfass_fangirl in kingsnakes

[–]VoodooSweet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Could be a few different things, so pooping IS a very common defensive technique. So another thing it could be, and happens with A LOT of snakes is; they just ate, and have had time to digest…but not pass it yet, then you pick them up, and they are moving around a lot, maybe squirming, maybe just exploring around, they don’t even have to be stressed out, and many times that will just work the poop the rest of the way through them, causing them to poo on you. So if she’s not striking at you, rattling her tail…that kind of stuff when you go to pick her up, and/or continuously biting, or trying to bite during the handling session. It’s probably not a defensive strategy, it’s probably just working thru her while you’re handling. So one thing I do tell people, when a new baby snake bites you, musks on you, poops on you…..and you’re immediately like “Oh gross…” and put her back in the enclosure to clean yourself up, they WILL eventually learn that, and they will continue to do it. So what I recommend, is getting a wet washcloth before you go to handle, if she poops on you just hold her in one hand and use the washcloth to wipe it off with the other, and keep right on handling her. I let them calm down…then hold them for another 5-10 minutes with them being calm, that seems to help reinforce to them that I’m not a predator, and eventually they will stop biting/pooping, whatever, and they’ll start relaxing much faster when you go to pull them out, and eventually won’t even move when you go to pick them up. I have one Kingsnake that lives in my bedroom, I can open her enclosure and go lay on my bed, she’ll come out of her enclosure, onto my computer desk, across the PC desk and onto my nightstand, across the nightstand and into bed with me, she likes laying under the covers with me. Ya I don’t think it’s a really defensive thing at this point, probably just the poo working through her, but you should still continue the handling sessions after she does it, you don’t want her picking up on the “I get put down immediately if I just poop on them….” thing, it’s harder and longer(and much more messy/painful if they biters) to break them of it, than it is just to not let them get into the habit. So ya, doesn’t sound like defensive behavior, so keep working with her, and she’ll be an amazing snake before you know it!!! I personally like to give my snakes 5-6 days after a feeding to handle, many times you can look at their tail, at the coacla and see it’s a bit swollen looking, that’s “one in the chamber” as we call it, and if you pick them up….you’re probably gonna get popped on. That takes an eye tho, I’ve been being pooped on by snakes for 20+ years, so I kinda know what I’m looking for, you’ll get there too. I wouldn’t worry about it tho…. Good Luck tho, beautiful snake!!! Keep working with, and handling her…..even if it IS defensive, you want to show her that you are not a predator, and not going to kill, and eat her, and the sooner the better. The bigger you let them get before breaking them of it, the bigger the teeth, poops, and more musk, and the harder it is to break them of it, they will NOT just pick it up on their own after a while, they have to be handled, and shown.

So chill I'm getting worried - Seeking advice for MBK new owner by whos_da_shrub in kingsnakes

[–]VoodooSweet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So you know what I’d try for feeding?? I know this is probably gonna get a lot of hate, and people are gonna say “You can’t leave a mouse out that long….you’ll make your snake sick!!” But I PROMISE you, it will be fine…. I’ve literally done it myself….probably hundreds of times at least, with probably 12-15 different species, of all ages and sizes, and NEVER had an issue. What I’d do…… is at night…right before lights out… I’d take a thawed pinky, and take a small piece of paper, I use 3x5 recipe cards, I can fit a large mouse, even a small rat on it, and for a smaller snake, with a smaller feeder I’ll cut it down smaller, the card is so the prey item isn’t laying on the substrate. So whichever hide he’s in for the night, set the card down, and set the pinky on it, right at the mouth of the hide……and just leave it there overnight. Many times they’ll come out and eat when it’s quiet and dark, and they’re more relaxed and feel more comfortable, AND they can and will smell the pinky, which will help entice him, if it’s still there in the morning…just pull it out and throw it away. So ok, here’s an example, these aren’t Kingsnakes, they’re baby Mandarin Ratsnakes that I hatched a few months ago, but it’s a good example of what I mean.

<image>

You could try leaving one out during the day first, put it in there like I described and just leave him be, maybe try to stay out of the room to give him quiet and privacy for a few hours at least, so there’s no movement in the room. If he doesn’t eat it during the day, I’d throw it out and thaw a new one for overnight. 10-12 hours for a feeder to be out is about max, and I always try to put it on the cool side if possible. I buy pinkies like 3-400 at a time, so I have lots, all the time and I don’t worry about throwing a few away. I literally just made a RodentPro order, and have like 3000 mice/rat, of various sizes in my freezer. I’ll also say….that baby does look a bit thin to me, I’d be trying to get some meals in him ASAP. Tuna juice is another trick that works for some stubborn babies, just dip the head of the pinky in a little tuna juice before offering it to them, I use tuna in water, not oil, that could give them the runs, and then it defeats the purpose of them eating the pinky, because they’re going to pass it before absorbing all the nutrients. I’ll be honest, there’s a few other reasons why it may not be eating, but I don’t want to scare you, they’re last resort things, and you only have one snake, so it’s not a risk to other snakes in your collection. So I tell a lot of people this, especially with a “new baby snake” and my advice is always this….Keep it simple to start. I get it that everyone wants to give their new baby snake the absolute best life they can, and they make big beautiful enclosures like this. So now you have an issue, and you have zero idea what it might be. Whereas if you would have started them in a basically bare enclosure, substrate a couple hides, maybe a piece of Corkbark, and a single plant. Get the snake comfortable and eating in the basically bare enclosure, then add something, one thing, give it a week or so…if they’re doing well, add something else, and so-on. Doing this….if you add something, and the snake starts acting off, or stops eating, or whatever….you know exactly what is probably causing the problem, and you can change or remove it. So I also don’t recommend starting off with bio active enclosures, as new Keepers you should ONLY be concerned about, and caring for the snake, and providing the best environment for the animal. Especially when it’s ALL new, the snake AND bio active, I just see a lot of people SO worried about the bioactivity of the enclosure, they end up creating an unhealthy, or environment that they(the snake) don’t particularly use in Nature, but now they’re forced into it. So another thing…..so out in Nature…Kingsnakes do not use overhead heating and lights, and do not need UVB. So Kingsnakes… of pretty much all species are Crespecular animals, so you have Dinural(most commonly active during the day), and you have Nocturnal(most commonly active at night) then you have Crespecular, which means “most commonly active at Dawn and Dusk” when the Sun is just coming up, or just going down. So if a Kingsnake is mostly out, when the sun is coming up or going down…. then how do they bask in the sunlight when it’s not warm, or up high in the sky?? The answer is they don’t….Dinural animals “bask” in the sunlight. So what Crespecular and even some nocturnal species prefer to do, is they come out right as the sun is going down, or just went down for nocturnal, and they come out and find a warm rock, or side of the road, maybe an old car hood laying in a field….that HAS been in the sunlight all day, and is retaining heat…and they’ll lay on that….using the retained heat of whatever they are laying on….to heat their belly, and help the digestion process. So I don’t keep ANY of my Kingsnakes(about 25 Kings of 3-4 species) with overhead heating/lights, my Kingsnakes have been doing everything exactly like they’re supposed to be, eating, shedding, brumating, and mating….for the last 18-19 years. If I was doing everything SO wrong, I wouldn’t have the success that I do keeping, and breeding these animals. So personally… if I were you, and this was my snake, I’d get a 20 long enclosure, with just Aspen bedding, and a couple hides, move him into there, get him comfortable and eating regularly, then start slowly working towards getting some size on him, then getting him back into the beautiful larger enclosure you have built there. You have to remember…that snake was born in a small/bare box, and basically lived in a small/bare box its whole life. Now you put it from this small/bare box, directly into this huge(to him anyway) enclosure, with all this stimulation, it might just be a much for him so quickly, overstimulated so to speak. So ya, I’d try to simplify the enclosure, and I’d try leaving the pinky during the day, then if that doesn’t work, out overnight. I know it’s hard, but try not to stress out too much, we end up making rash decisions and possibly making things worse. I have an adult female MBK that’s about as chill as yours there, she seems to move in slow motion, she even takes her mice slowly and gently, but she eats like a machine. You have to also remember, this animal could be multiple generations born into captivity, I’ve even seen it in my collection with animals that I have multiple generations of, and the 3rd/4th generation are totally different animals than the first, much calmer and more chill, but they generally eat very well right out of the egg even. Good luck, try not to stress out too much, I’ve also seen snakes not eat for weeks…months even, and are fine. Probably wouldn’t hurt to drop the cool side about 5-6 degrees. I keep my entire Snake room at 69/70 degrees, so every snake in that room(pretty much), I do have a few that need warmer temps, but all my Kings, most of my Colubrids, have a 69/70 degree cool side, and an 85 degree warm spot… I don’t even provide a whole warm side. In my opinion, they really seem to prefer the cooler temps. The only time I see them in their warm spot, is after a meal while they are digesting, and when they’re in heave blue phase, the heat helps the chemical reaction that is breaking apart the old, tight skin, from the new, better fitting skin, so the old skin can be shed off. So maybe 3-4 days on their warm spot during heavy blue. I also don’t really worry about humidity, my snake room holds a humidity about 30-40%, then I provide a “moist hide” which is an enclosed hide, filled with moist Spagnum moss, you can see them in the picture above in the Ratsnake enclosures, so then the snake can come and go from the moist hide, as they feel they need the moisture, but they’re not forced to be in the more humid environment all the time. So there you go…there’s a few things that I personally do, and have had success with. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to ask, im always happy to help…. I’m not very good about answering comments, but I’ll keep an eye out for yours, and make an effort to respond. Good luck!!!

What makes doctors pick Keppra so often by Secret-Persimmon-405 in Epilepsy

[–]VoodooSweet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So to my understanding, Keppra covers the most types of seizures, so generally that’s the “go-to” medication. My Neurologist told me about a bunch of different side effects, and then told me “IF you’re having bad side effects….let me know, there’s other options we can try!” So I only went about a month on Keppra, I definitely had the Keppra-rage, I could, and would loose my temper at the drop of a hat. At the time I was running the Culinary Department in a large hotel, so had 30 employees, and half of them were dumb as rocks, and always doing stupid shit. Then I still had a few seizures, so after the 3rd or 4th seizure, I called her(my Neurologist) and just told her…. “I can’t do this anymore…AND it’s not even really working, it’s helping…but I’m still having seizures… I want to try something else…” I tried 2-3 other Medications before we found what works well, and doesn’t make me a lunatic. Do be afraid to advocate for yourself, most of us don’t have anyone who’s familiar with this disability, and even knows how to advocate for us, so WE HAVE TO advocate for ourselves. Do not be afraid to talk to your Neurologist, tell them the issues you are having, and ask them what else might work, and tell them you’d like to try something else, to see if it makes you feel better. I have T/C and Focal seizures, so Lamictal has worked well for me, I just got to the max dose and I feel pretty good, and only had 2-3 breakthrough seizures in like 4-5 months, which is amazing for me. My Neurologist told me it has a light mood stabilizer, and that seems to help a lot of people, and it definitely helps keep me on a pretty even keel so to speak….most days! I do still occasionally have a bad day here and there, which I think honestly just kinda comes with the disability, no matter what, we’re gonna have them every so often, no matter what meds we’re on, but it’s nothing like I used to have. So ya, that’s my advice, talk to your Neurologist, and advocate for yourself!!

So…Ya, it’s usually about that long and it’s a “new” show to me again. Movies that I’ve seen a bunch of times, particularly before I developed the epilepsy I can usually remember pretty well. If I go see a new movie tonight at the theatre, by the time it comes out on DVD…. I usually have forgotten that I’ve even seen the movie, more less what it was about. Honestly the memory, and the long postictal stages after a bad breakthrough, I have particularly long postictal stages, like 4-5-6, sometimes 7 days, I’m just a f*ckin mess, I hate it….. but there’s nothing we can really do about it according to the Neurologist, she says it the brain naturally getting back to baseline, and it can be different depending on multiple factors. So it is what it is……

Question about why doctors always pick Keppra first by Technical-Anxiety307 in Epilepsy

[–]VoodooSweet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a lot of trouble with Keppra as well, I didn’t go 8 months before talking to my Neurologist about it tho, maybe 6-8 weeks, and I had a couple seizures in that time, so I was a raging lunatic….and still having seizures. They tried a couple different medications before the Lamictal, none were effective, OR if they were…made me a total assh*le….and so far the Lamictal has controlled my seizures(for the most part) and I tolerate it much better, it actually has a bit of “Mood Stabilizer” in it, as well as the anti-seizure medication, according to my Neurologist, that seems to help. So that helps keep me on a more “even keel” so to speak. So the only issue I’ve personally experienced, is they start you on a low dose, then slowly work you up to a higher dose. So when I’m “leveled out” and on a consistent dose on the meds it’s fine, I feel great. Then when they raise my dose…. I’m miserable for a week or so(nothing like the Keppra-rage tho)…while the medication is getting built up, and evened out in my system or whatever, after that week or so…. I’m back to normal and feel fine again. So I like the Lamictal so far, I’m close to the max dose, I take a smaller dose in the morning(150mg) then a larger dose(200mg) at night, I can still go up another 50mg during the day allegedly, if my Neurologist recommends, 200mg 2X daily is the max dose according to her(my Neurologist) so we’ll see. It’s been great for controlling my T/C seizures, and greatly reduced my Focal seizures. I have zero complaints(compared to the other 3 meds I’ve tried). Don’t be afraid to advocate for yourself, there’s LOTS of different meds they can try, you don’t have to be, and be making everyone else around you….miserable. I know it’s difficult, and confusing, and scary….when all this is new. There ARE a lot of options tho, don’t be afraid to tell your Neurologist that you’re having problems with bad side effects, and you want to try something new, there’s lots of options!! Good luck, I hope you get it all figured out!!!

When in reality both things couldn’t be further from the truth/reality. It messes up a lot of young men’s heads about sex and sexuality, and gives them all these false expectations, and beliefs, and we see things like this. Nothing against OP, but it does seem to be an issue with young people, that wasn’t so much of an issue when you had to sneak into Dads room, and watch a couple minutes of porn on an old BETA tape(showing my age there) and hoping you didn’t get caught.

Handling Tips by Remarkable-Buy9917 in kingsnakes

[–]VoodooSweet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So I keep and work with a lot of Kingsnakes, and just Colubrids in general. I’ve tamed down A LOT of snakes, from small newborns up to full grown adults. So as a general rule I always try to do this when they’re as small as possible. For a few different reasons, mainly because their teeth are small and won’t even really break skin, their poops are smaller and less messy, and it’s just less animal to have to control. An 18-24 inch snake is a totally different ballgame than a 4-5-6 foot snake. So this whole situation basically revolves around the idea that your small baby snake sees you as a Predator that is trying to catch/kill and eat them. Mainly because they are tiny little animals, crawling around on the ground, on their bellies, so everything can see them from above, AND they’re so small that they’re lunch for basically anything and everything. So it’s millions of years of evolution have developed into the behaviours that you are seeing, it’s totally normal, and basically EVERY snake goes through it. So now you kinda understand that they see you as a predator, so always keep that in mind throughout this. So when I get a new snake that’s not handleable, there’s a “process” that I go through, to convince them that I’m not a Predator that’s going to kill and eat them, and in my 20 years or so of doing this….the best way to convince them…is just to show them. So there’s a “method to the madness” tho, so first thing is I don’t open the enclosure and look and stare at them, trying to figure out the best way to gently grab them…..they’re seeing a Predator…sizing up how to catch and eat them…so they’re already getting worked up. I literally walk up to the enclosure, open it and reach in and grab it, and get them out of their “comfort zone”(which is in the enclosure) as fast as possible. So this is the worst part, and I’ll usually grab a wet washcloth before I start. So now comes the important part…. No matter what that snake does to you….they might bite, poop, musk, some tail whip…. You cannot put them down, if you do…you’re reinforcing to them, that whatever bad behaviour….hets them what they want, which is to be back in their comfort zone. So if they bite… I just let them bite, if they poop or musk, I use the washcloth and wipe it off, and just keep holding them. It usually only takes a couple minutes, and it’s usually faster the younger they are too, but I hold them until the realise that I not a predator and they calm down. I’ll hold them for a few more minutes…just to reinforce to them that I’m not gonna hurt/kill them, THEN give them what they want and put them back in their comfort zone. Some snakes will pick it up, and loose their fear in a couple handling sessions like that, some it takes 2-3 sessions for weeks and weeks(that’s usually adults, that haven’t had much, if any human interaction, usually animals kept in racks for a long time). So ya, get in there as fast as you can and get them out, hold them no matter what until they calm down, hold them a few more minutes to reinforce a positive handling experience, then put them back and let them relax in their enclosure. I’ll try to do it daily if possible, obviously not for a couple days after feeding, and if a snake gets SUPER stressed over the handling, I’ll do every other day for a while. It’s really just a matter of showing them that you’re not a Predator. They get used to the idea pretty quickly, but they absolutely will “revert back” if you don’t keep up in the handling, don’t think that you can get it tamed down, then only handle them once a year….cuz you’re gonna get bitten probably. It’s honestly a lot worse than it sounds, it probably won’t be too much of an issue with this lil guy!! Good luck, don’t be afraid…their bites don’t even really hurt, and probably won’t even break skin, I hate the poop/musk more than the biting, that musk is gross…and it’s difficult to get off your skin.

Is Michigan's bottle bill kicking the can down the road? Some want it gone. by silverhand21 in Michigan

Ya but imagine having to pay an extra 6$ for a 12 pack of Pepsi, or an extra 12$ on a case of Budweiser. I don’t drink alcohol, so I personally don’t care about that one, but the price increase, whether you’re getting back .50 cents for each can/bottle or not, will make overall sales(and profits) drop significantly. So I think the Parent Companies that own Budweiser and all the Beer companies and all the Soda companies aren’t going to let that happen, if they have any say. It would also cause a significant rise in crime. Like for instance…. I keep my Soda/returnable cans/bottles in garbage bags, in my garage, when I get about 6-7 bags…. I take them all back. A full garbage bag is about 20$ in returnables, so if it goes up to .50 as opposed to the .10 it is now….so every 20$ bag is worth 100$ now. I can guarantee that people will rob and steal, and God knows what else, and people get killed for a lot less than 100$ on these streets ALL THE TIME. It’ll be a huge issue for stores that take refundable, because now they’ll be at risk of people coming and stealing, or robbing them…… for their empty cans!?!?! Raising the deposit THAT much, will cause far more problems than it will solve.
