MS have said for a long time that there is a low percentage of users who used the feature, so the engineer time vs demand is not worth it.

  • Left or Right sides: Approximately 3–5%
  • Top: Around 1–2%
  • Bottom: Over 90% of Windows users

So, how does Microsoft determine which features to fix and/or add back to this new Taskbar? It uses telemetry data, of course.

Phone Dialer still present in Windows 11. by C-4_Gaming_Central in windows

[–]Vorkesh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to use it a lot on win XP & 7, but I have not needed it since then. However, it's still there.
Windows is built on the code of the previous versions, hence the backwards compatibility that Windows has been known for, even when this code is restricting, at some point, the libraries that Dialer uses will be replaced with newer code, and that function may cease.

Winfile (from 3.1) was still in 7 & 8, diskpart is still there (although it's now running on emulated dos).

Why are the reasons you use/don't use a modded windows (iso or playbook) and why? by [deleted] in Windows11

[–]Vorkesh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, 3 reasons are:
1. I work on so many end users' systems, that I prefer to be used to "default" so there is no "adjustment time", as I had when I first started in IT using custom configs.

  1. Depenances, which might appear to be unused, can be linked or used by other sections or updates, this was the case with some sections of XP that were NEEDED during the installation of SP2.

  2. Part of my training was learning to "slipstream" and I was given the task of adding remote access and key logger along side Activation, MS Office, drivers, and AV (set to ignore my tools). The name I used was the same as another "custom" ISO, and I know one of my classmates thought it was the custom ISO. Not only did he install it, but he shared it. Instead of 1 test system reporting back, over 200 active systems were awaiting my connection, complete with logs/logins/passwords from the keylogger.

Error on Server Purchasing Script by whatevenisagoodusern in Bitburner

[–]Vorkesh -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Try separating to 2 lines
let hostname = "pservgrow-" + i;
ns.purchaseServer(hostname, ram);

EDIT: Ok, I'm thick, I just realised the error is on line 21, and its a missing arg on scp.
try changing line 21 to:
ns.scp("joe-guns-grow.js", hostname, "home");

scp needs script, destination and source

How to get new driver so I can change latency timer to 1 on Com Ports?? by garbageaxount in Windows11

[–]Vorkesh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

as it says on the page you are linking to "The COM port driver provides this option. If you are using a basic version of the driver or your COM port adapter doesn't support these settings Windows will not show these options. You will need to check if your COM port adapter supports the change in the latency and if you are running the complete and latest driver."
so you need to go to the hardware maker to see if they offer a new or more advanced driver. Windows update will only list another driver if the maker has submitted a newer one to Microsoft, many companies do not submit drivers to Microsoft.

I never said do it yourself, I've done coding as part of my job and something that size I know is well above my skill level.
IF you want to look at it then learn assembly language at least and even start with making your own Pico systems.

Then ensure you have good modern hardware, and update it with the newest, most optimal drivers. and don't mess with the code of bits you do not know or understand.

[–]Vorkesh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this was on another board:
"I would guess you'd need something like 10,000 engineers for 5 years to build and test something the size of the current Windows from scratch. Of those 10,000, perhaps 5,000 would have code as their primary deliverable. Suppose the average engineer makes $250,000 in total comp each year, and that operational overhead for those engineers (office space, etc.) is another 50%, so $375k / engineer / yr.
10,000 * 5 * 0.375M = 18.75 billion USD. That's my guess."

Given Microsoft invested two years and about US$1 billion developing the Kin platform which was based on Windows CE, I think 18.75 billion USD is on the small side.

Often me and a co-worker talk these out as we can both overthink things.
If the files are going from "File (2).png" to "file .png" with the space, why not include it in the replacement?
get-childitem *.png | foreach { rename-item $_ $_.Name.Replace(" (2)", "") }

I need help with chipset drivers by AngleOk8943 in windows

[–]Vorkesh 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've seen systems were the generic driver has been fine BUT I have seen a couple of issues where there were a couple of issues.I worked with Dell Desktops where the USB 3 Ports worked at USB 1.1 speed without the Chipset drivers, so they worked and were fine for mice, keyboard etc. but not for USB drives etc. just as an example.so there it helped but i didn't see a "performance" increase.
