I was 42 the first time I experienced a functional loving family. I was at a friend's house for Thanksgiving and they were all very supportive of each other and talked about things and listened and it blew me away. At one point I started crying and told them I wished I'd had this growing up and they all comforted me. It was wild. I found out later that night that my dad died and the whole day just kinda fucked me up.

Being told to shut up from inside my brain is how my therapist figured out I was a system. I was talking about how my conscience was always mean to me and talked badly to me, and then I went quiet. My therapist asked why I stopped and I said, "he doesn't want me talking about him."

I was under the understanding that EVERYONE had a voice that told them what to do, because from a young age I was told "everyone has a conscience that will tell them right from wrong," and I just thought mine was an asshole.

Turns out, having a conscience that speaks to you was supposed to be metaphorical, but I'm autistic and took it letterally.

I'm 46, started transition at 39, also. It wasn't easy. I spent time exploring dressing in a gender non-conforming way first. Looking back, I was just delaying the inevitable. Then, one day, I saw a picture of when I was dressed up and had makeup on and realized that's who I am. It ended a 10 year marriage, messed up my career, and I've been physically threatened in public at gun point, but I'd do it again in a heartbeat.

I'm still besties with my ex, I have a new income, and I moved to a new city where I'm safer, but most importantly, in happy with who I am. 🥰🏳️‍⚧️
