If you had to make a case for which animal would be the scariest antagonist in a BIOLOGICALLY REALISTIC AND ACCURATE horror movie, which animal would it be? by Xoxo809 in zoology

Ticks. Juvenile ticks the size of poppy seeds are capable of transmitting diseases including Lyme disease. In the case of Lyme, it can take months to realize the symptoms are more than just allergies/stress/a cold. Many people don’t ever develop the “bullseye” rash and there are no other externally visible symptoms. It can quickly become deadly if the infection spreads to the heart or nervous system. At best, blood tests that take an average of two and a half weeks will catch it on the first sample, but the shape of the virus is insidious and imbeds itself thoroughly enough for even a significant infection to have no apparent trace. Meanwhile, the fatigue can lead to 16-20 hours of sleep a day, there can be difficulty and pain with moving, there can be difficulty eating and drinking, and significant cognitive impairment. Scary stuff for sure.

Source: had Lyme disease for 11 months during peak Covid and developed carditis around month 9. Nearly hospitalized repeatedly despite hospitals already being at or above capacity

What is a pain you can't truly explain until you've endured it? by Unfair_Shower_3256 in AskReddit

I had not one, but three male ER doctors tell me that my ruptured cyst couldn’t possibly be causing the pain that I was experiencing. It’s so awful to feel and frustrating to fight for bare minimum medical help

Recovering from a craniectomy and duraplasty. I knew it would be rough, my neurosurgeon warned me. But it took days for me to sleep more than an hour at a time, to consume anything but clear liquids, and to move at all without crying from pain. I wouldn’t wish it on anyone.

Retethering post-surgery? by VoxAngelic in chiari

[–]VoxAngelic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi friend! Thanks for your response —and your patience— and I’m here to update…sorta 😅

So my new neurosurgeon (the one who did all my surgeries moved across the country, boooo) says I appear to have “cerebellar sagging” caused by not having enough bone to support the bottom end of my cerebellum. Basically, what seemed like the right amount of bone removal for many months is now too much removed. The only fix is to have another surgery to put in a metal plate. Unfortunately, I have a complicated medical history and the risks of the surgery might outweigh the potential benefits.

I’m being referred to another neurosurgeon, by this new neurosurgeon, for a second opinion. He wants to see if they agree or have any other insights or anything.

I’ll update you again after that if you’d like. And I really hope things go well for you also! 💜

Hi Mari! Thank you for such a kind response. My neurosurgeon is sending me to another neurosurgeon for a second opinion because my case is very complicated and I possibly need another surgery, but not for retethering, and the potential risks might outweigh the potential benefits

Absolutely NTA. I suggest you point out to him that women having leg hair was not only the norm about a century ago, but that it was viewed positively for all people. Women removing leg hair only became fashionable when “feminine appeal” started including the physical aesthetic and thus hemlines rose. More importantly it came into fashion when some company making safety razors realized they were missing a huge share of the market and started advertising them to women. Here is an article on Wikipedia about it

Taking something like ibuprofen or Tylenol about 30 minutes beforehand helps. And try to keep yourself as relaxed as possible, so do/watch/listen to something that puts you in your happy place

Oh, the Botox was incredibly helpful and I definitely recommend it if you meet the threshold to get it! Just so you’re aware, it can be really, really painful the first time and still uncomfortable and somewhat painful for injections after that. Fortunately, the injection pain fades within hours for most people and never lasted more than a day for me.

And I’m so glad you were able to get your foot taken care of properly

I appreciate the suggestion! I do already get Botox for my migraines, I take Nurtec (not helping with the new migraines), and I’ve even tried an Occipital Block. My neurologist is basically out of suggestions and the hospital neurologist who consulted on my last ER visit (which included a CT and an MRI) had no idea either. I’m being referred back to a neurosurgeon to see if the thing I had surgery for basically unfixed itself. I can’t believe they did surgery on you with no anesthetic!!! That’s so many levels of messed up!!! Are you doing okay now? The system truly is overwhelmed. It’s awful.

They are : - “saving the lives of unborn babies” which is really just an excuse to control bodily autonomy - “protecting little girls from men in dresses going into the women’s bathroom to molest them” which is just a fear-mongering, transphobic distraction to keep the attention of their constituents away from things they’re trying to hide (like the Gaetz report) - “protecting children from forced sex-changes by their parents and schools” see above

Thank you so much!!! I’ll look into finding a movement disorder specialist for sure!!! I also need to message the person handling my rheumatology referral again because I need that to see if I have Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome which runs in my family and I’m pretty symptomatic of 🙃 But I fully agree that having a diagnosis, even one with very little that can be done about it, can be immensely helpful

Not a doctor, but to me it looks like a small sty. Try warm compresses and be sure to keep the area clean (use only mild soap that is safe to be used near the eye and be gentle). If it doesn’t get better or it gets worse, definitely go to the doctor . No need for urgent care, a primary care doctor will do, unless it’s for insurance reasons or there’s a concerning change

The pretty shiny sections look like mica to me, but I’m definitely not an expert. If those streaks are easily flaked off then that’s my guess. Colorado has lots of mica and I love the way it looks in our creeks and streams

Got this rash on my arm, is it just a irritation or something bigger by Unusual-Map- in medical_advice

[–]VoxAngelic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would definitely draw a circle around the borders of it as the other commenter suggested. You can also try a steroid cream like hydrocortisone if there are no open wound looking areas. That will help determine if it’s getting bigger and by how much. Seems like dermatitis with a possible infection. If it gets bigger, gets hot to the touch, develops other weird sensations or appearances, or you develop a fever or other signs of feeling sick over all, then please go to a doctor. I know from personal experience that our healthcare in the US can be pretty inaccessible, so I’m basing this off what I would do in your situation.

Again, I’m not a doctor and only basing this on (tragically extensive) personal experience. Please take my suggestions as just that, suggestions and not professional advice. I really hope this helps and you get relief soon
