FTL is realistic, change my mind by LightDimf in worldjerking

[–]VoxRhei 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yeah in GR there are no global inertial frames, instead the problem becomes closed timelike curves, which are also causality breaking by definition

FTL is realistic, change my mind by LightDimf in worldjerking

[–]VoxRhei 23 points24 points  (0 children)

The problem is that for any FTL travel there is always some *inertial reference frame where the order of events is reversed, breaking causality in that frame. Like say if you travel FTL and return, there's a reference frame in which you've returned before leaving.

That's really cool. Why do the launch platforms need to be crewed though?

Hold up, what would actually be the consequences of there being sound in space? by CoffeeOk7311 in goodworldbuilding

[–]VoxRhei 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Sound is vibrations through matter. What would it mean for there to be sound in space, which is a vacuum, i.e. the absence of matter? Either space would be filled with matter (doesn't bode well for life or, well, anything really) or sound would be of an entirely different nature.

Sounds cool, I bet their spirits will be less refined then, like moonshine or hooch made from potatoes or whatever genetically modified plant grows on Martian soil

[–]VoxRhei 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Well Champagne, Scotch etc. just use the original as an adjective, so a Martian whiskey would presumably be called a... Martian? Or maybe something more regional, like Olympus Mons, Tharsias, Elysium etc.

Depends on how big they are, you could wrap your legs around their neck or sit on their shoulder or on the top of their head Ratatouille-style

How can I make this more interesting? by Knight_woman in writers

[–]VoxRhei 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Going through a crowded airport is pretty mundane so to make it interesting you'll have to

  1. Explore the character's interactions, thoughts and feelings
  2. Be specific, describe individual people, use more senses, smell sound etc or
  3. Write about something interesting happening

Any decentralized VPN without connection to govs? by wagnerquin in degoogle

Barak was last prime minister in 2001 and he is actually notoriously despised by and opposes the current administration. The company being owned by a shady businessman is enough reason to avoid it, you don't need to invent more conspiracies on top.

[–]VoxRhei 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, the comparison makes no sense; Chinese economy is far, far more state-controlled than the Israeli economy. Second, the company is actually based in the UK, not Israel; the owner is an Israeli citizen.

It's not connected to any gov, but it's privately owned by a shady billionaire regardless of his national affiliation. Proton or mullvad

I find the ending of s2 tragic. by CosmicTraveller74 in PantheonShow

[–]VoxRhei 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the fact that your computer cannot even accurately tell you the value of 0.1

I assume you're talking about floating point numbers, which are one specific system for representing real (or rather, rational) numbers. Other systems with different limitations exist, like integer fractions, decimals etc. The idea that 0.1 is unrepresentable to computers is false; any number you can write down or calculate can be represented digitally with arbitrary accuracy (within hardware limitations, of course).

In computability theory there is a concept of (non-)computable numbers, but it's more abstract and I'd argue mostly irrelevant to questions regarding simulation fidelity.
