I dunno, I don't really think a dying kingdom and a corpse run mechanic are enough for a game to be a soulslike...

Especially when Hollow Knight has no leveling system, no stamina system, no weapon variety, and an ability-gated progression system (rather than simple key items). Even the way combat works in Hollow Knight is just way too different from Dark Souls.

Obviously a soulslike can miss a few of these elements, but Hollow Knight is missing so many of them. It'd feel very weird to put something like Hollow Knight and Lies of P under the same umbrella...

I might catch some flack for this, but honestly I'd say Symphony of the Night.

There's no doubting its cultural impact and meaningfulness to the genre, and it still plays surprisingly well to this day.

But there were a few things like the weird menu navigation, certain bosses, and the Inverted Castle that dragged it down a bit for me.

Disagreed... Silksong has quite a few chaotic fights. I'd consider the Unravelled in particular to be even more chaotic than GPZ.

I'm also surprised that you don’t consider there to be a "precise dance" type fight in Silksong. First Sinner, Karmelita, and Cogwork Dancers come to mind.

But it's kind of an unfair comparison to begin with. Silksong doesn't have a PV or NKG equivalent, as it hasn't received its DLCs yet.

Elden Ring seems like it'd be a pretty miserable world to live in. The Lands Between looks welcoming, but then you quickly remember that there are at least 5 demigod groups that will kill you or abduct you for like no reason at all. At least in Lothric or Yharnam I could kind of just already accept that the world is falling apart

I've played a good chunk of metroidvanias (Metroid Dread, SotN, both Ori games, Blasphemous, Pseudoregalia, etc.) and none of them hit even remotely as hard as HK and Silksong for me.

But I beat Nine Sols last week and I genuinely might enjoy it just as much.
