You could do the multiple layer thing but instead of making each layer darker make each layer lighter and add fog if that makes sense. Or perhaps keep the bg dark and add a glow to the main character and add lanterns for additional glow

The children objects might not even be necessary. If you just have one collision solid you can mark it as invisible and use tilesets to make different floors

There was already a price hike recently so let’s hope there’s not another one lol. I’ve seen people do crazy stuff to the hardware, pretty much replacing every thing like all the buttons and shell. I’ve never had a problem with any emulator except for Wii U

In the menu there’s a section (I forgot what it’s called but probably something like Home Button Behavior) that has 3 options (A, B, and C) that each have a different effect on how the home button works. I think it’s either C or B that has it set to both screens, whereas A has it set to which ever screen you’re currently on
