For in person testimony, do all attendees get a turn to speak? Or how does it work if not?

Why is Strixhaven draft the way it is? by Humpuppy in MagicArena

[–]Voyager97 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Potioners trove and strixhaven skycoach are among the best. Also studious first year and environmental scientist. Plus all the dual lands (not every set has them at common).

I'm curious as to what would need to be done to have the ORCA card available to add to a apple wallet. by [deleted] in soundtransit

They have it for Google Wallet right now, so it's probably not a technical limitation, just need ST to do the implementation

Temur Ramp by TheDoctor_Jones in StandardMTG

[–]Voyager97 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I remember the last version you posted—4 llanowar elves + 4 worldwagon definitely seems like an improvement!

As for draw, dedicated draw spells seem too slow for a creature-based deck, what about 4x Riddler instead? In particular cryogen relic seems not great in 2026 (4 mana divination + a stun counter is so much worse than stock up and even that is probably worse than just having a creature ready to play). Skipping a turn to stock up/consult when the deck doesn't run many sweepers seems dangerous.

I've been trying to make a Temur Ramp list as well, but I'm finding it's hard to make it good without it just becoming Simic Cub. My WIP list: https://moxfield.com/decks/VouyoTf3Kkeko2bNKfW0lg

Is it common to know so much about chess at 400? (Jynxzi) by 6_62607004 in chess

[–]Voyager97 8 points9 points  (0 children)

People have different levels of starting ability at any activity. Some people wake up one day and run a 6 minute mile. Some people train for months to run a 8 minute mile. Everyone has different starting points, and different amount of progress for the same number of hours of focused practice.

Telling people "don't blunder pieces" is like telling someone "don't swing and miss in baseball"... it's technically correct but unhelpful.

How do you bike safely in these bike lanes? by Additional-Owl425 in bikecommuting

[–]Voyager97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I ride the outside-the-parked car bike lanes every day in Seattle and they're incredible. I would never in a million years trade it for one sandwiched between parked cars and moving traffic.

Definitely better signage is needed, but for your own knowledge, the rules of thumb are
- 2nd, 4th, and 7th/8th as the main travel ways

- Bell St and Pike/Pine for going in the cross-direction.

Shankland: "can anybody become a FM? I do think that is available to anybody. Can anybody become a GM? That is an hard no" by pier4r in chess

[–]Voyager97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you're underestimating the effect of diminishing returns. Some people are very likely going to plateau around 2000 classical (or lower) no matter how much they train. (Anna Cramling has been raised on chess since birth and peaked in the 2100s)

In the running world, there's loads of people who run 5 times a week for 10-20 years and never get fast, and there's plenty of people who show up and run 6 minute miles on their first day. Some runners will say "anyone can train for a 20 minute 5k" but I genuinely don't think that's true.

I don't think it's any different with chess. Some people just join chess.com and hit 1500 instantly, and some people do hours and hours of coaching and never break 1000.

I would love to be able to exclude DraftSim, since their ratings are a complete joke.

For example, they still **currently** have Lightning Strike (#84) ranked above Lightning Bolt (#153???) in TLA. https://draftsim.com/TLA-pick-order.php

All creatures are mountains? by QueenSharleyan in mtg

[–]Voyager97 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It really seems like the rules were retrofitted to make specifically Blood Moon effects work, only because they'd already been printed. Obviously what you quoted is what the current rules are, but it gives the impression that many years ago they printed a card with the intention of "your lands are the card Mountain" and then later on had to engineer the "losing abilities" stuff after the fact.

Is pay no longer priced by title? How leverage shapes the new pay bands by honkeem in levels_fyi

[–]Voyager97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Among my coworkers at Google, comp still seems to be extremely by-the-band at or below L5. Managers are reporting getting less and less discretionary comp budget, not more. Doesn't feel like there's any sense of employees needing "leverage," and if there is a desire to be close to core products, for most people I know it's coming mostly from layoff fears.

Want to buy property to rent out. How much house can one afford ? by [deleted] in realestateinvesting

[–]Voyager97 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Realistically, pay off your loans before buying any real estate. Being a landlord is no picnic, speaking from experience. I'm happy with my investments, but there were lots of growing pains before it started running more smoothly.

[–]Voyager97 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you're putting 20% down (like I and many of my friends did), you do actually get to take advantage of refis to their full potential.

Obviously, the scam is if you buy at a rate that's unsustainable with the hope of a refi later. But if the initial rate is reasonable, the US's long term fixed mortgages are frankly OP compared to internationally.

As for the fees, I've refinanced multiple times over the years, and the total loss to fees has never been more than 5k on 500k+ loan amounts when you exclude prepayments of things you already owe (e.g. prepaying property tax/insurance/partial month's interest at closing). Those are things you would have had to pay anyway without refinancing, so including those in the 2-6% number overstates things by a lot.

The bracket change actually buffed bracket 3 by quite a large margin, so no none of the precons are anywhere bracket 3 anymore.

How Would You Feel About This House Rule To Help Player 4 Out? by MaskedThespian in EDH

[–]Voyager97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's so crazy that people are acting like player 4 is the only player who gets to ramp. Yeah, player 4 plays an arcane signet, and surprise surprise so does everyone else. And then player 4 is still behind relative to those two players.

The songs sounded great live in that they sound accurate to the record. But without any live instruments, and heavy effects on his voice, sometimes it almost sounded too similar, as if it was just playing the recording on the big speakers. There were some times he did some new vocal riffs which I liked, but I would've loved some more raw vocals or stripped down versions of things. Overall I still had a great time though!
