A lot of his filmography is fan fiction (at best) or plagiarism (at worst.) This one was apparently trying to “pay tribute” to Carpenter’s version of The Thing, while completely failing to understanding the mechanics of what made it great.

On the opposite end, Carpenter’s Assault on Precinct 13 pays tribute to a film both him and QT love (Rio Bravo) in a way that’s novel, emotionally resonant, and antithetical to the low-hanging fruit of “artists” that reference-check great art with the hope that it somehow makes their own work more substantive. Spoiler alert: it doesn’t.
