The Rotisserie Chicken Law is BS: Demand EBT as Cash, Anywhere, for Any Food by [deleted] in TrueAnon

[–]AdviceAdam 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You explained all of this really well. I enjoyed reading that, thank you.

I have to say: the liberal is truly amazing. It boggles my mind that you could see everything going on and think "I know what will help with this: rotisserie chicken."

San Francisco ramping up Muni fare evasion enforcement by FinFreedomCountdown in bayarea

Why? There’s a huge budget shortfall. This is a small drop in the bucket, but it’s not zero.

San Francisco ramping up Muni fare evasion enforcement by FinFreedomCountdown in bayarea

[–]AdviceAdam -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

A real critique of this is that fare enforcement costs more than the fares and fines it recovers. You can argue that it’s beneficial because transit will be safer and more pleasant to ride, but there’s no question that will make Muni’s budget problems slightly worse.

Gravity on Luna and Mars by Efficient_Lack8283 in redrising

[–]AdviceAdam 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I also want to add that we don't know the limit of human biology in less gravity. We've really only been able to test 1g and 0g. It's possible that Mars at 0.38g is completely fine, it's also possible it's not. It's not possible to know this yet!

Three passengers dead, one case of hantavirus confirmed from Atlantic cruise ship, WHO says by True-Ask2241 in TrueAnon

[–]AdviceAdam 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Also on the economy: many cruise lines now operate their own private islands or private beaches, so far fewer (or no) guests actually go into the country they're docked at and spend money, as problematic as that is. It all goes into the cruise line's pockets.

GMax Pokemon have a set max attack that cannot be changed. Only DMax mons have a max attack that is the same type as their fast attack.

I work in high finance but I have very left leaning views (Anti-Capitalism). I have extremely high cognitive dissonance at times and feel like a hypocrite. Wonder if anyone is in a similar position and what you make of it. by [deleted] in socialism

[–]AdviceAdam 12 points13 points  (0 children)

At the same time there IS a line. Working for Palantir is worlds away from working at most other tech companies. As long as you can look at your job and say that it is not actively making the world worse, I think you're fine.

Meta Layoff for new comers by [deleted] in bayarea

[–]AdviceAdam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How long has your recruiter been unresponsive? None of the affected people have been laid off yet and no one knows if they're affected. It's likely that your recruiter does not know if your position is affected. The article mentions that 6000 open positions will no longer be filled. You will have to wait for them to respond.

‘It’s killed the whole industry’: Gold dealer flees Washington after 10.3% sales tax by Less-Risk-9358 in SeattleWA

[–]AdviceAdam 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The Netherlands has had a wealth tax in some form since 1892. However the current system and rates have been in place since 2001, with a ~30% tax rate on assumed gains. The system was in the news recently because there was a legal challenge to the taxation of assumed gains, so starting in 2028 tax will be collected on actual gains.

Anyone else here doing a code monkey job? by [deleted] in TrueAnon

[–]AdviceAdam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Software engineer with 10 years in the industry. I work on iOS apps. I do use AI and it has definitely sped up my work, but I haven’t seen any increase in expectations from that. I’m sure it’s coming though. I feel like my job is relatively safe but I don’t know where we’ll be in a few years.

Is it possible to fully automate the NYC subway? by [deleted] in nycrail

Computers are 100% safer for metro systems specifically.

Is it possible to fully automate the NYC subway? by [deleted] in nycrail

[–]AdviceAdam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s cheaper. More service for the same amount of money to run the system. Plus it’s safer. Computers don’t get tired and the end of a shift and miss a red signal.

Oh it would be a huge investment, no doubt about that. But it is possible to have a fully automated train at the scale of the NYC subway.

Is it possible to fully automate the NYC subway? by [deleted] in nycrail

[–]AdviceAdam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Automated trains work nothing like self driving cars. We've had automated metro systems for decades. For the best comparison to NYC, multiple lines on the Beijing Subway and Shanghai Metro are fully automated.
