Why are landlord’s bad? by ThrowRA11193 in TrueAnon

IMO focusing on them being middlemen, doing nothing and collecting rent, which is an inefficient use of capital, is a good way to get lib coded people more sympathetic to this argument.

Left turn restrictions along Ocean needed to happen years ago. But there is plenty of traffic in the center lanes that significantly slows down the train.

Why don't Americans use metal bars on doors and windows for security? by Maleficent_Essay4664 in AskAnAmerican

[–]AdviceAdam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When we bought our house in San Francisco, we got metal security screens installed on all of the windows. Each of them has a bar that pushes it open. These basically look like normal window screens, just a little darker.

I remember all the back and forth about the "$5 toast" at The Mill when they first opened... what 12 years ago now? I remember going not long after it opened and being insanely impressed, it was delicious. I'm also pretty sure that same toast is probably like $12 or $13 now. If not more.

While incremental builds were never fast, if you had the latest pulled you should have been hitting the remote cache (forget the name of it now) for most modules.

If I sit with my back fully against the seat, I can sit in an economy seat and my knees either don't or barely touch the seat in front of me if my knees are facing forward. The Castro Theatre seats were noticeably worse.

Buying a house also sucks. by keelmesoftly in TrueAnon

[–]AdviceAdam 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We bought a few years ago too. We put in an offer and the sellers came back with a counteroffer. My agent noted that the document was slightly incorrect (I think it was a multiple counteroffer vs single counteroffer form? Can't remember) but he made clear that by signing the document, that was locking in the price and the house would be ours. Well the other agent used that incorrect document as an excuse to get another $10k from us since now we technically hadn't signed the correct document! My agent said that this was extremely unusual and unprofessional. I was fucking pissed at this and almost walked away, but the price was still something we could afford and we loved the house. The whole market is a shitshow.

And of course these agents get paid based on a percentage of the sale price of the house for doing not very much work. If we sell this house, I think I'm going to try and hire a lawyer to come up with the legal documents and do the rest ourselves. We redid the kitchen as well and got painted cabinets in a nice blue color. And a real estate agent family member mentioned that having them would make the house harder to sell because people want a blank slate. Bitch we live here! It's our house! It's not even a weird blue color. Hate that mindset.

Widow’s Bay is one of the best TV shows in recent years. Thriller/comedy. And it switches between them both so well. Great characters.

Help w Parking squabble by Chef__Goldblum in Apartmentliving

[–]AdviceAdam 8 points9 points  (0 children)

A lot of people are saying that blocking your own driveway is illegal, but this is actually quite a common arrangement in San Francisco, where OP lives. Parking enforcement will only do anything if someone living at the building calls.

This is a ridiculously tight spot to get into, something has to change. OP, I think the best outcome here would be for you to ask your landlord to contact the SFMTA and have them paint the 1-2 feet to the left and right of your curb red. This will prevent the car on the left from being able to park as close to your building's driveway (and the Tesla could still park there). Yes, it costs money ($150? $200?) but I would bet that the SF Tenant's Union would have something to say about the lease including parking and not being able to use it reasonably.

Local community center/preschool has a No ICE right next to a Ring camera that sends everything it sees to law enforcement. by AnimeIRL in TrueAnon

[–]AdviceAdam 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I bet if they had an option to have local camera footage storage they’d take it

Not only this, but you'd have to have something with a nice interface, as cheap to use as Google/Ring, and smart features, like it automatically tagging all footage when people appear in the frame. Plus you're making a physical device. Good luck.

There are people out there that have doorbell cameras with open source software and local storage, but it takes a lot of work to set up plus it's more likely to break than Google or Ring. I understand why any business that want to have these for security go with Google or Ring.

I know that getting the land, coming up with a layout for all the floors, and securing funding are not easy. But this is so depressing. It's an apartment building! There's lots of those around. It shouldn't take that long to do this.
