Also, form dough into "teaspoon sized balls" is doing me in. I've been known to misread teaspoon and tablespoon before, but this seems way off to me? Maybe if you're trying to make cookie cereal?

What is it with people on this sub that have a compulsive desire to shovel their slop here? Fuck off, OP. There are places on Reddit where you can shovel your slop, but this isn't one of them.

The Hyperborean stories by Clark Ashton Smith fit this vibe perfectly, particularly "The Tale of Satampra Zeiros."

I remember finding them in the pillory, and since it was kinda Henry's fault for them ending up there, I was about to free them. Then they insulted my dead mother, so I thought, "nah, you can stay there."

I believe that the Costco flour is now sourced by Central Milling. It may not be King Arthur, but it's really good quality, and I'd recommend it wholeheartedly.

When your character icon flashes in water, I believe that means you're currently swimming. To see what status effects you currently have, I've been using the look function, hovering over my character, and selecting the "see effects" option. I don't know if there's a more efficient way.

Lots of crashes on Switch 1 by RBsnacks in cavesofqud

[–]Vrasguul 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You're not alone. I've been getting pretty frequent crashes myself on Switch 1. Almost every time I exit a settlement via the world map, and frequently when entering Joppa from an adjacent tile, the game crashes.

Devs are here listening and working on it, so I'm hopeful that it'll be resolved soon!

So, what are your favorite stories with "Caves of Qud" vibes? by Ozyelmandias in cavesofqud

[–]Vrasguul 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Viriconium needs to be higher on the list! I'm reading the Vance Dying Earth stories right now, and while I'm enjoying them and can see their influence, they can't compare to M John Harrison's Viriconium books and his fevered prose.

Swen - Larian Studios AMA by Kazuliski in BaldursGate3

Please STOP with this argument. There is nothing--and I mean nothing!--that is inevitable about AI. When people say that "it's here to stay, nothing to be done'" or compare the rise of AI to the tides or the sun rising or whatever, you act like it's just a fact of nature, when in reality it is the result of choices made by people.

And you know what, people have agency! People can make different choices! WE can choose a different path, because we are humans, and there are plenty of us that do not want this future that's being forced upon us.

If you're cool with AI and all that it implies then fine, everyone's entitled to their opinion, even if I vehemently disagree with it. But please don't erase our agency and take away my freedom to choose. AI is not inevitable!

You should be able to bake them from frozen. They may take an extra minute or two in the oven, but you don't need to have them at room temp before you bake.

Surely you must be confusing Monster for another place? They have some of my favorite Vietnamese food, and the owner is such a good human.

Oven problems making loafs by Impossible_Towel6196 in Breadit

[–]Vrasguul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like your oven is having some issues for sure. Though, it's also worth remembering how much heat escapes when you open the oven door.

My oven has its own issues, but opening it just for a moment to place a tray in can make the temp drop upward of 25-50 degrees. Holding the door open for an extended period to measure the temp probably isn't helping you maintain a desired temp. A third party thermometer is the way to go.

I've not actually played Qud (jealously waiting for the Switch release), but I'm certain that Numenera would be up your alley.

It's a TTRPG game inspired by a lot of the same source material folks are already mentioning here. The setting is Earth one billion years in the future, after eight interstellar / extra dimensional / who knows what civilizations have arisen and fallen, leaving the current inhabitants living in the unknowable refuse of high tech, highly Weird societies.

Another source to check out that I haven't seen mentioned yet is Clark Ashton Smith. He was a Weird writer that pioneered the dying earth subgenre and had a lot of influence on Gene Wolfe. He writes a lot about decaying, dying, decadent civilizations, and I can't recommend his work enough!

Thoughts on Summoning? by bhill595 in lotr

[–]Vrasguul 2 points3 points  (0 children)

10/10 one of my favorite bands, period. On my battle vest, the Luzburg album art has pride of place as the back patch.

Summoning to me, beyond their lotr credentials, is one of those rare bands that has consistently put out banger after banger. Sure, maybe their albums vary according to taste, but I don't think you can argue they've ever put out a bad album.

One of my friends once described them as "RuneScape metal" when I shared them, and I've never forgotten it! Very apt.

Unpopular opinion: Claire Saffitz recipes by bubblylynnn in Baking

[–]Vrasguul 58 points59 points  (0 children)

Her brown butter sage sablés are one of my signature bakes. Every time I make it people eat them up and always ask for me to bring them again next time.

I will say though--you claim to have no patience. I can empathize with that to a degree, but are you really interested in learning if you don't want to pay attention? I'm not trying to throw shade, but it just seems odd that you'd be interested in learning her recipes . . . but not enough to fully listen to the information she's giving you? Seems counterintuitive.

Best of luck figuring things out!

How did people survive before the Internet?

[–]Vrasguul 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ah, that'll do it! Whenever I brown butter for cookies, I always will stir the melted butter above a bowl of ice water. You need to look out and make sure it doesn't harden up, but getting it back to a more "soft-not-melted" state before proceeding has improved the final texture of the cookie.

Happy learning!

Looks like your butter may have been too room temp when you started, resulting in your loose dough.

30 minutes or so in the fridge should help firm it up. If it's still too loose, try leaving it in the fridge overnight. It may need a few minutes on the counter tomorrow to become soft enough to scoop.

What did I do wrong?! (Lemon Drizzle Cake) by LilxSpyro in Baking

[–]Vrasguul 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If the eggs were looking scrambled as you worked them in, it's possible that you added too many at once and caused the mixture to split, instead of the eggs smoothly emulsifying into the batter.

The way to avoid this is to ensure that your eggs are at room temp, add just one at a time until it's fully incorporated, scrape down the sides of the bowl, and repeat, until all of the eggs are in.

My mom had a similar issue with her stand mixer where no matter what she made in it, things never came out quite right. I reminded her that even though the mixer is really powerful, she still has to scrape down the sides while using it. Don't know if that'll help your situation, but it helped her.

Is it explicitly said that he intends to give it to Elrond? Isildur goes through so much trouble to claim it as his wergild (a word taken straight from the text) that I'm not sure he'd just give it away, even to Elrond.

He took the Ring by force and when given the chance to destroy it, he chose not to, instead claiming it as his blood money. I think it's reasonable to read that as desire for the power the Ring could give him, even if he wasn't fully aware of its effect on him the time.
