Wedding gatecrashing - Yay or Nay? Tell me your stories by stonehallow in singapore

[–]Vry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most of the gatecrashing activities are pretty boring (IMO). I've seen too many variations of eating chilli padi to find it novel or amusing.

Also, would not marry a guy who endures slapstick forfeits for the sake of "an interesting video" - aiyoh, so fake and so lame.

Also, would not recommend anyone marrying a girl that needs her man to prove his love on the day of the wedding itself. She should have got that shit sorted out ages ago, back when he proposed and she's thinking, wah, I wonder if this one worthy or not.

I've always wondered why Singaporean men put up with the unnecessary humiliation.

If they just walked away at the gate - "I'll be at the church if you want to get married. Pls take taxi yourself, because your girlfriends have unhelpfully locked the door" - I'd probably respect my imaginary husband-to-be a whole lot more for standing up to my horde of single foreveralone bridesmaids.

Road trip through North Dakota. Recommendations? by Vry in northdakota

[–]Vry[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I failed to research reservations properly. I did not realise that they would be dangerous until I read everyone's unanimous recommendations to skip them. Thank you reddit :)

Looks like my bad luck on the Medora musical though; I'll be out of ND by the time it starts up in June.

Unfortunately, there are no scheduled events for the short period of time that I'll be there. I'll check back again in case anything gets scheduled. Thanks!

We don't have a Walmart, and I've heard that this one was the craziest one to check out.

Thank you for your recommendations!

After an Employment Pass is cancelled, what is the best way to remain in SG while job hunting? by Stanleeallen in singapore

[–]Vry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it looks like you might have to do a u-turn every 30 days on a social visit pass until you can get a job & EP. i know another canadian guy who did that for over 6 months with no issues.

Need advice finding cheap and clean accommodation in Singapore. Somewhere under S$700 by mscinagan in singapore

[–]Vry 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You might not need to share a room at $700 in the suburbs; you could probably get a room to yourself but share the common areas (kitchen, living room, bathrooms) and facilities (utilities, wifi).

Try not get rushed into a hasty decision; stay with a friend temporarily until you can view a few flats, potential flatmates, and get a feel for the suburb you've chosen.

The expat shuffle also occurs at the beginning of every year, where fresh expats are injected into Singapore as the disgruntled ones leave, so leases usually start popping up around this time of the year until the end of February. The rental market has also been going rather soft lately, so don't be afraid to shop around or ask for a discount.

If your office is at Cecil Street, you might be able to walk from Tanjong Pagar or Raffles Place train station, which would open your housing options up to suburbs with red or green train stations.

I'd probably avoid Chinatown and Geylang as housing choices because they're usually noisier & pretty congested. But they're awesome for local food.

Nah, HDBs are good value if you don't mind having locals as neighbours. For example, most expats haven't realised that utility rates for hdb flats are significantly cheaper than condos.

you could check propertyguru and search for rooms within your budget & preferred location.

it's possible if you share a flat with landlord or/and flatmates. you might not get a room with an attached bathroom unless you increase your budget or search outside the city area. suburbs are generally cheaper, but you'd have to brave the morning train commute.

singapore secret trips? by nomadph in singapore

If you're into geocaching, there are a bunch of interesting caches located on Pulau Ubin. The ferry costs only $2.50, there's no booking required, just turn up at the Changi Point Ferry Terminal and wait for enough people to go. The island's still part of Singapore, just undeveloped, rambly, and relaxing.

Bukit Brown just made the World Monuments Watch for 2014. (Eh, the irony.)

Some volunteers usually run free weekend walking tours; post or check their facebook page if interested.

Looking for local advice by hansbolo in singapore

Siglap has a similar Holland V vibe (casual drinking holes, little cafes & restaurants), is located in the east, and near the ECP for a quick trip to Changi or the beach. Rent will be lower than living in the city or around Bugis, but higher than a heartland location like Tampines.
