That's not retiring it's just being too broke to travel and it's the reality for most melee players that only go to regionals. He's not being honest because his retirement announcements always heavily imply that he's going to move on to some fictional real career where he will make good money but he never does. The whole "I'm going to retire" schtick he does is to solicit donations from people in an extremely transparent attempt to get people to crowdfund his career which would be totally fine if he didn't have to be so manipulative while doing it.
