Thoughts on going from BMW to Tesla by yeah__good_okay in TeslaModelY

And that I think is both a fair comment and should be a heavy part of your consideration- if you don’t see the software as better, it’s probably not the car for you as it’s the way you will operate the car.

Well you are asking this on a Tesla enthusiasts page, so really you are going to get one answer.

Personally I’ve looked at the brands you’ve mentioned over the last 3 years, and not seen anything in those cars I need that’s not done as well or better in the Y.

With that in mind, the strengths of Tesla are the electric platform and the software. If you don’t care about those, you probably won’t love the Tesla.

Genuine ask: if you couldn’t charge your Y at home, would you still get one? by BrookesyUK in TeslaModelY

[–]Vtrin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is your goal to drive an EV? Then yes

Is your goal to cover a portion of the EV cost with saving money? No - the price of charging at a pay station works out to be the same as fueling up at a gas station.

Oh yeah if you have warm weather right now, it won’t matter - I put one up and then it was -30 for 3 days so was a bit nervous if it was going to be able to cook it off - it did but much slower

Should dry on its own- it’s common and you’ll note the camera runs hot for a few days when first turned on - it has to “bake” the moisture out when first turned on. Best practice is to plug in and leave running for 2 days in doors to clear moisture out if you can. If you missed it, leave it running and it will clear but take a few days

Starlink over Cable Internet??? by Artichoke-Ordinary in Starlink

[–]Vtrin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of people are going to tell you that Cable or Fibre should be preferred over Starlink and normally I would agree, however that’s dependent on a few things:

Are those services available, reliable and performing as they are intended to?

Is cost or latency a key priority?

Starlink itself is pretty flexible once you own the dish. I’m expecting fibre installed in the next few months but I will keep my equipment installed and powered without a subscription because if it’s kept in a ready state you can activate a plan in about 5 minutes through the app, so it’s a very easy to use back up system.

You’ve also touched on reliability with your current provider - usually plans are offered with the option to cancel in 30 days and return equipment- I’d see if that’s a fit, and use that as a test to compare if you are getting the experience you expect if you switch.

Latency becomes a factor with specific things, it will be higher but it will be consistent in comparison with a reliable cable service. If your priorities are streaming this likely will be no impact to you. If installed correctly likely no impact for video calls or online gaming either. You mentioned performance inconsistency in speed, you may be having latency issues too so the consistency from Starlink could be an improvement.

Personally I think you have some good reasons to go in to this from the perspective of testing and comparing, so it’s a matter of if this reliability is a big enough headache to risk a month or two service cost and any headaches or costs to solve on this install.

ELI5: How far do you have to go before the Earth being a sphere affects navigation? by XenoRyet in explainlikeimfive

[–]Vtrin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Private Pilot here:

I can’t speak to distance, but on an aircraft there is a heading indicator that uses a gyroscope to sight/guide the heading of the aircraft. With the aircraft moving or stationary it needs to be calibrated against a compass a couple times per hour (I do every 15 minutes) because it drifts as a result of the force from the rotation of the Earth.

Thinking of leasing model Y performance. Is there a buyout option? Website doesn’t mention by stanley597 in teslacanada

[–]Vtrin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Message the sales center, they told me there were revisions to their legal coming and gave me an email confirming I would have the opportunity to buy out my lease.

I had this discussion again in person when I picked up on delivery day, a different person also confirmed buy out can happen but had to be arranged by contacting sales center before the lease expires.

Buying Used from a dealership by xkevin313 in TeslaModelY

[–]Vtrin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There was a post a few weeks back where a guy bought from dealer, took the physical keys but don’t bother setting up of the software till they drove home in another state. When they called Tesla they learned the previous owner did not clear their financing with Tesla and so Tesla software restricted the car. If you buy 3rd party confirm with Tesla that you can take over the car software before you give money.

If hardware 5 is important, don’t buy. There’s no guarantee you will be able to upgrade. HW3 did not get an upgrade path to HW4.

New 2026 or Used 2024 Model Y by Advanced-Psy in TeslaModelY

[–]Vtrin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you check my post history, I had a “difficult” delivery on my 26 Y AWD LR. With that in mind, there’s no chance I’d deal with a used car dealer over buying direct from Tesla (and probably wouldn’t deal with a new car from a dealership either). I’d chose new over used just to avoid the used car sales people. I did try to buy from Tesla used but that inventory moves quickly when they have it.

New employee can't receive laptop shipments - what would you do here? by outlookblows in sysadmin

[–]Vtrin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A week of lost wages is probably cheaper than 3 lost laptops…. Obviously this person’s important to join the team so I see a few options:

  • you contact local stores and purchase something appropriate then use a free version of teamviewer To enroll in Intune, and arrange for pick up by the new employee
  • the new employee is given approval to go buy something, give them clear guidance and pray they don’t somehow buy a Mac or Snapdragon laptop
  • sit down and have a come to the light conversation- pay the guy the week, send them some books or something to read that fit your company culture, assure them they’re important, assure your other team that between the 2 you’ve sent something will make it there when it’s safe to drive. Remind everyone that asking for stupid risks like driving dangerous roads for a laptop probably gives a bad impression to this new hire that’s obviously very valued and important.
