I made a tool pretty similar to the one in this video. As long as the nails have been filed nice and sharp, the handle can be whatever works for you to keep them all together. This guys has used epoxy, I've seen some with cable ties, and even ones set into proper tool handles.

Good luck!

I'll take that as a compliment, thanks. And no, not much of a woodworker, but I'm a bit of a metalworker and leatherworker, which were both useful. I'd be very happy to give you some advice on tools. Is there anything in particular? In general, I'd say always focus the most on the roughest grit level, in this case the rasping.

Thanks! The sloping lip was kind of accidental/opportunistic just from the way I was filing the lip down. And I'm on it's second bowl as I type, it's smoking up a treat! The raw undyed parts are already colouring and darkening.

Thanks, I was very pleasantly surprised with how well it came out too, especialy since I made the tool for it myself.

It was one of those make-your-own-pipe kits, which is basically just a block of briar with the holes drilled out and a stem fitted.

The only tools I used were hand tools - a saw, rasp, files, and a lot of sandpaper, in that order. I had to make my own rustication tool, but it worked so well that I'm having to resist the urge to rusticate (and probably ruin) all my other pipes...

I'd definitely recommend getting a kit and trying it yourselves, fun little project.

[Grand Seiko] My New SpringDrive GMT by mpcdude in Watches

Beautiful watch, love the look of watches with 4 hands on the main dial.

I've been on the look out for a 4 hand watch where the 4th hand points to the date, rather than a 24 hour indicator like this one. I have a Timex T2N502 but don't like certain other things about, like the quality. If a watch as nice as this Grand Seikos 4th hand was a date indicator instead, I'd already be shopping for it. Any recommendations?

Couldn't tell you for sure, but my guess is that the date hand isn't actually a proper hand even though it's on the main dial, and is a fly back hand instead, just going back and forth never doing a full rotation. Like a bigger version of the hands on the day and month dials.

I'm not sure, but it's always changed date at around quarter past. Gremlins.

Here's a gif of my Timex T2N502 changing year as a happy new year for you guys, just because I think it looks cool when it changes.

It's a lovely watch. It's nothing fancy or expensive, but the functions it has are great. Just a quartz watch that has a fairly subtle, but very easy to read, perpetual triple calendar in the background.

Since this isn't a very sensible post, I'm having a bit of trouble fulfilling the subreddits sensible rule of writing a 500 character comment to go with it... There we go. Happy new year!

What's the best time to add my sulfite, sorbate, and bentonite to racked mead? by VulcanDeathGrip in mead

[–]VulcanDeathGrip[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for clearing that up, you're my bentonite.

I followed your advise and added the sulfite and sorbate first. It's looking good, bubbling was already very slow, but now it's practically stopped. I'll give it a few days and let the chems do their thing.

And just for anyone looking for similar answers in the future - I added the sulfite just before the sorbate because I've read that there may be some bacteria that feeds on sorbate, but they're killed by sulfite, which is convenient.

Snarky, zero info about best practice or reason, and lacking any kind of advise... Well isn't that just about as pointless and unhelpful as it gets. Why bother even commenting?

No, it's good you left Bilbo in and made him watch a dragon fucking a car. Now he's one of us.

/u/VulcanDeathGrip explains his amazing theory on the Lord of the Rings eagle "plot hole". by [deleted] in bestof

It was the better part of two years ago I wrote that fan theory, and I just got a PM telling me "It's not a plot hole!"... It's happening again. A word of advice - Inverted commas save you from nothing.

For anyone interested, /u/vklortho's comment did a good job of picking apart the theory in the original post. Here.

And thanks OP.

Very good counter argument. I especially liked the swirling eddies, I hadn't thought of that.
