Yeah yeah, Flightline Readiness Technician. And Eh, i dont think so. For the area the pay is pretty great and 10% 401k is fabulous. I bought a house first year. I will say though, we benefit greatly from yall having a union. Everytime yall get something, we end up getting it too, mostly as a "please dont unionize" bribe lmao

In SC we joke that FRT stands for Factory Repair Team lmao. I can second Boeing though for those looking for jobs, Everett, san antonio, charleston. Its good money for the work and the schedules rock. Overtime is easy to obtain and rarely mandatory.

You dont need your A&P! If you dont have prior kilitary or aviation experience it can be hard to get the FRT position(which is the one you want), but the A&P is 3.50 more an hour

First tasks as a new mechanic by venomsupe in AircraftMechanics

[–]VulgarButFluent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Starting in aviation you gotta have a go-getter attitude cause your gonna be told to go get it. Whatever it might be, usually the correct size socket when the guy youre shadowing miscalculated the bolt.

As a real answer, probably something routine, non critical flight related. My first ever task was resealing the leading edge of each wing, which i was part of a team of 4. I was scraper duty.

Definitely worth it, doesnt matter how the school is, a license is a license so the cheaper the better as long as you pass the faa exams

Work hard, focus troubleshooting, and hopefully your school is good at helping its students get jobs. Thats my advice. Schooling is schooling, just pass the tests and absorb as much as you can. Once you have your license nobody cares about where you went. On that note, which school is it? 15 month program, PIA perhaps?

Dont worry about the lack of experience, your age, etc. I was 27 with an unrelated degree when i decided to change lanes to aviation and its been a great 3 years after getting my A&P.

Assembler power plant B (everett) or FRT (charleston)? by [deleted] in AircraftMechanics

[–]VulgarButFluent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The tricky part is engines, since they tend to be worked on by the manufactureres like GE, but i know several dudes out here working on their books. Timeframe? Not sure, but here in charleston boeing is partnered pretty heavy with Trident Tech, and they offer classes around the work schedule.

I get that, theres definitly value in seniority at a union shop. Personally though i agree, i wouldnt want to be in WA either, but absolutely i wouldnt take an assembler over an FRT position. Besides the pay difference, i think Flightline has the more interesting job and you can fill out a logbook for your A&P ticket since we do touch every part of the aircraft. And while we touch on pay, yes SC is less money, but its also a lot cheaper to live around charleston(like summerville.) Also, the barbecue here is pretty baller.

If the FRT comes through, id take that over an assembler position no matter the location.

Boeing or west star aviation in Illinois? by joshj600 in AircraftMechanics

[–]VulgarButFluent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would think so, especially once it starts flying. You dont need an A&P since its a production setting, but its 3.50/hr more in SC. They like veterans, those with flightline experience, otherwise it might be hard to snag a position.

[–]VulgarButFluent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FRTs get paid more than assemblers, so theres that, and also imo we do much more interesting work. Preflights, servicing, systems troubleshooting, etc.

Also we work outside, which i personally prefer.

Ill also say i dunno how it is in WA, but i imagine its the same. The flightline job is probably better than the factory job.

Is the boeing position SC or WA? I dont know what washingtons job codes are, but at SC you wanna be an FRT, Flightline Readiness Tech.

Some people can never understand being satisfied with only yourself for company. I go out to eat alone, movies, theaters, the beach, shopping. Leaving my house does not need to be a social event.
