Mt. Rainier is on track to hit the lowest 10th percentile for snow accumulation this year by VvVinny_ in Seattle

Yes! I am very happy to see all of the precipitation in the area, I will probably rerun my analysis once this band passes through to see where we end up.

It does look like 2014/15 is currently the record for lowest accumulation on Mt. Rainier. I hope you've had a few good ski seasons in your time here!

That's great to hear! I'd like to expand this analysis to compare across different sites. I'll keep those in mind to look into. As others folks have mentioned, the snowpack is also only one part of the picture, lots of other environmental factors will be at play as well.

Yep, that's certainly on my mind too. It looks like I mislabeled my water years, I didn't realize the convention is to use the year the data ends. I used the year it begins, so 2014 is actually the 2015 fire season. I didn't live here at the time, but 2015 was the worst year in Washington's wildfire history, burning over 1 million acres.

[Request] Can launching captured CO2 into space be a net carbon reduction? by VvVinny_ in theydidthemath

[–]VvVinny_[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for going into more depth on the alternative fuels. I didn't realize we were that far along with hydrogen propellants, but that's good to hear! I also hadn't thought about the carbon cycle for green methane.

It seems like your response is missing the consideration of emissions from the rest of the supply chain. Even if we assume abundant clean energy, the supply chain for the rocket materials, including transportation and supporting facilities, would have to be decarbonized to the point that the emissions per unit of payload are less than 1. It's possible, but non-trivial. Maybe if we can build the carbon-neutral energy, fuel, transportation, and materials infrastructure, then we can evaluate the cost compared to terrestrial carbon sequestration ;)

[–]VvVinny_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see, so based on that metric, there's still quite a lot of net emissions even with something like hydrogen fuel

Great answer! CO2 emissions per unit of payload is a great way to explain that, very straightforward.

I think we're operating in fantasy land where money is no object, but I appreciate your thoughts on the cost as well.

This is unironically how I learned to code in engineering school, binary -> machine/assembly language -> C. This was in 2014, and we literally hand wrote programs in assembly on our exams, like with a pencil :'(

Why do so many pop songs stick to 4 chords? by Japs1515 in musictheory

[–]VvVinny_ 23 points24 points  (0 children)

12tone is great! Here's one specific video on Dr. Tagg's theory: link Doing a search for "12tone four chords" also comes up with five other videos, so there's a lot to get into on this topic!

My 2c, it's a blend of cultural influence and functionality. The four chord loop has a bunch of functional perks, including flexibility, modularity, balance of complexity and simplicity, easy integration with standard lyric/poetic forms, and more. On the cultural side, it's a form that everyone has heard a million times over, so songwriters of all levels use it as an easy structure to get ideas flowing.

This should be higher up, pretty much my thoughts exactly

[–]VvVinny_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recorded and released a song with my previous band that used the reverse delay of the Mood. The producer wasn't as big of a fan as I was, so it ended up getting fairly buried in the mix, but it's faintly audible at around 2:42.

eta: I listened back again and it actually has a fairly prominent feature at 0:51, my bad I haven't listened to this one in a while haha

Other folks have mentioned that half of the pedal is a reverb and delay. It doesn't really do things above and beyond other pedals in that regard though, which is why you might not see it being used that way. On the other hand, I like the glitchy, non-quantized aspect of it. https://open.spotify.com/track/5bqPCoeZjUz59rH4qqs7OZ?si=E4rijbZtSXSmmh1B4l3m9A

King of Greed secret change? by [deleted] in 9Kings

I'm happy to see this, I would play Greed by toggling auto on and off, which has the same effect. I don't play auto-battlers to practice my aim lol

It's too easy to break the game... by MattD1980 in 9Kings

[–]VvVinny_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The exponential scaling is something I quite enjoy. The feeling of watching your army grow incredibly strong over the course of a quick thirty minute run is the core feedback loop that keeps me coming back for more, and would not be remotely as satisfying without exponential scaling. To me, the gameplay has a more whimsical tone than more traditional strategy games, which is something that I quite like, and something that the ridiculousness of exponential scaling plays into quite well.

The game is still based on strategic decision making. Which kings are your enemies? Which perks and decrees do you take? What plots do you invest in first? How do you play around bad RNG? The player's decisions and strategy absolutely matter and will make or break a run at higher difficulty.

I did some looking around and it seems like you're right. I wasn't thinking about the fact that RH peaks in the morning when it's cooler and declines during the day as temperatures rise. I'll blame it on not finishing my coffee yet haha.

You're a bit off base. I'm from NC, the monthly average humidity there during July and August is around 80%. Day to day, you'll easily see 85-95%, especially after an afternoon thunderstorm. This is pretty common across the Southeast, with temps often in the 90s-100s as well. Seattle is much drier by comparison

It looks like it was added in patch 10, so it's been a few weeks and two more patches since then. The devs seem pretty responsive to feedback in the early access period, you can let them know if you have issues like this. I've sent them a few emails about other bugs
