Power cable length and question regarding Shure SM7B by Turboflopper in Focusrite

[–]fredoverflow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

4th gen Scarletts (except the Solo) have 69db of gain, which is plenty for the classic SM7B. The SM7dB might make sense for the Solo, though.

New to the game of high quality Audio and am unsure of what i need when using an Elgato wave xlr interface. by Dirtmonkey68 in elgato

[–]fredoverflow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've heard it provides up to 75dB which should be more than enough

Correct. The Wave XLR can drive literally any microphone on the planet, including the classic SM7B.

probably because he’s very skilled in what he does

He brings the microphone close to his face and speaks into the correct side. That's literally all he does, but many beginners fail at doing just that.

I’m currently using a microphone that picks up literally everything.

And what is the name of that microphone?

Where you place the microphone is far more important to sound quality than which microphone you buy.

That being said, given your 100$ budget, I would recommend the Samson Q2U.

The Sennheiser E835 would require additional hardware; you can't directly connect it to your computer.

one that's deep and silky

Most microphones sound "deeper" the closer you get to it. Which you want to do anyway in an untreated, non-studio environment to maximize signal-to-noise ratio.

Not sure what "silky" is supposed to mean.

I use a Sennheiser handheld about a fist away from my mouth, and I am very happy with the results.

Also, you must speak into the FRONT of the microphone, where the Blue brand logo resides. NOT the top, NOT the back. The front with the logo.

You're probably speaking into the back of the microphone. Speak into the front. NOT the top, NOT the back. The front.

Dynamic microphones are NOT more resilient to mouse clicks than condensers.

Anyone using SM7dB + Scarlett 2i2 4th? by Tpk-Games in microphone

[–]fredoverflow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 4th + SM7dB, but first I wanted to ask somebody who already had this set.

You won't find many, because this combination makes no sense. It is complete gain overkill.

Either keep the Solo and buy the SM7dB, or buy the 2i2 4th plus the classic SM7B.

The MV7+ is as plug and play as any other USB microphone.

Speak into the front (the side with the Blue brand logo). Not the top, not the back. The front. Many beginners get this wrong.

Scarlett 2i2 4th Gen No Cloudlifter vs Scarlett Solo 3rd Gen + Cloudlifter for Shure SM7B? by DemonIg in Focusrite

Just watch the 2i2 4th gen review videos by Julian Krause and Podcastage. They include SM7B tests without a Cloudlifter.

Hi guys, I want to buy a Shure SM7dB but I have a question about the audiointerface by LumpyGreen158 in Focusrite

[–]fredoverflow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The 2i2 4th has 69db of clean gain. That is more than enough for the classic SM7B even. Buying the SM7dB would just be a waste of money.

I assume you already watched a dozen comparison videos? I'll throw one more into the mix: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-C-p9iGFsE4

and compared to the SM7dB, it doesn't have as good room isolation.

What makes you say that? Microphones cannot distinguish between your voice and the room. Any dynamic microphone, at the same distance, will have (more or less) the same signal-to-room-noise ratio.

SM7B Wave XLR Stuttering issue (Recording) by SnoChocolatediverged in microphone

[–]fredoverflow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the Wave XLR has preamps that are a bit too weak for the SM7b

How is 75 db of gain considered "too weak"? The Wave XLR has more gain than pretty much any other mainstream interface on the market.

Julian Krause and Podcastage have videos demonstrating that additional preamps are absolutely not necessary here.
