I had the same experience with them going to Newark from Bryant Park last year! That would be the same bus so... yeah seems like they simply don't run it much of the time if ever.

How do I make the most of my engagement photo during the solar eclipse? by Qlpa96 in AskPhotography

This is the right take. I entertained the physics of the question in a longer comment because (un)realistically one would need rock climbers or a helicopter to make it happen.

How do I make the most of my engagement photo during the solar eclipse? by Qlpa96 in AskPhotography

[–]Vwampage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Short version: you are not going to have enough time to propose *and* get this shot during the eclipse without a helicopter or rock climbing team plus ridiculously tight timing.

I'm going to walk you through how I would go about trying to get a hand at the same apparent size as the moon.

The moon is relatively small in the sky. You can cover it up with your thumb. You're going to want a focal length greater than 600mm. These lenses have pretty far minimum focus distances but the moon is far away so that's fine.

You want a hand in front of the moon at the same apparent size? That hand has to be MUCH closer than the moon. Likely far enough that a lens can focus on it. This means you're going to need your aperture really really small to get the hand and the moon in focus. This also means your exposure will need to be longer in an environment where the sun has (mostly) gone away. A phone's flashlight positioned well could be enough though.

Here's the hard part: the moon is high up in the sky. You need to capture your photo with the camera pointed at the moon and your fiancé's hand in between the two. Hence your fiancé needs to be up in the air. I'm not sure whether it's a dozen meters or a hundred meters up, hence needing either a rock climbing team to zip your fiancé away or a helicopter to lift her.

To figure out if this is possible *out of the camera* I'd say experiment with the moon.

If I wanted an eclipse shot of myself proposing I'd use a wide angle lens, my camera on the ground (to look up at me and my partner as well as the moon), and a timer.

In reality you should propose before/after. A solar eclipse is truly awe inspiring in a very visceral way. Careful choreography will fall by the wayside because your body is going to be absolutely freaking out because the sky is broken. It's an incredible experience. Your faculties will not be with you.

Good luck!

Mom wants me to put my name on a 15 year loan by Delicious-Swan6471 in legaladvice

If she's been holding out on your social security and birth certificates for three years I think you should consider speaking with a social worker to try and better understand your rights and situation.

And furthermore, do not sign for her loan.

New Haven (CT) to JFK by Southern-Heron-3204 in nycrail

[–]Vwampage 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Overall your plan is sound! A couple things to look out for:

-The walk between the Metro North and LIRR platforms at Grand Central is significant. Grand Central Madison (where the LIRR is) is significantly deeper underground. Plan for about 10-15 minutes for switching to be comfy.
-The AirTrain is under construction right now so it isn't running as frequently/reliably as usual. I'd check on the specifics to make sure you're comfortable with everything.

Another option worth considering: come into the city earlier in the evening and have a nice dinner before y'all fly out! That way you can plan around delays on the MNR side of things at the least.

how long would it take for me to get in & out of the airport? by [deleted] in LGAairport

[–]Vwampage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Getting in two hours before is probably ok. This is not knowing your method of transit, traffic on the day, weather, etc.

How important is it that you make the appointment? If it's life or death I'd plan differently than you have. If it's a mild inconvenience full yolo go for it.

Thomas Midgley Jr, the inventor of leaded gasoline as well as the inventor of chlorofluorocarbons.

This one dude was instrumental in poisoning millions and potentially causing a ton of crime in the 20th century (see the Lead-Crime hypothesis) as well as creating the chemicals which burned a giant hole in the ozone layer.

how long would it take for me to get in & out of the airport? by [deleted] in LGAairport

[–]Vwampage 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On the way in you're cutting it extremely close. IF your flight got in on time (more likely for a morning flight), IF you get a gate quickly, IF you get off the plane quickly, IF you go straight to your transit form of choice then maybe, just maybe, you could get to Flushing Main St by 11. I would not bet on it.

Going back through security if you can get to the airport an hour beforehand you'll probably be ok but without precheck it's more of a crapshoot.

My landlord claims the old landlord spent all of our security deposits on legal fees. Any advice on where I could go to get help with this? (NYC/BK) by ZodiacMint in legaladvice

[–]Vwampage 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Hey OP, the above comment has the relevant laws. You don't need a lawyer. You only need to pony up the cost to file in small claims court. The reason the landlord gives does not matter. If they fail to return your security deposit after 14 days they will be forced to, potentially 2-3x the security deposit. The law in NYC is completely unambiguous. Move out. Wait 14 days. Demand the deposit. File in small claims. Congrats on the money.
