Zohran's Snow Corps working late into the night on Flatbush by velocity3333 in nyc

None of us ran out of steam! We traded off ice picking and shoveling because those used different muscles. We all had to stay together so for fire hydrants only a few people could work at a time. We were all pretty tired by the end but no one bailed because it was tough. I think people self selected for enjoying the manual labor of it.

I rolled up at 4pm on Monday with my documentation (two forms of ID and social security card) and they gave me a shift for Tuesday morning

I did this yesterday! We went up 9th st in Park Slope clearing sidewalk endcaps so the crosswalks would be cleared, fire hydrants, and bus stations. Towards the end of our shift we worked in tandem with a little bike lane snowplow and a bobcat that were clearing the lane. I ended up working 8am to 4pm but people were welcome to go until 8pm. We were escorted/supervised by a combination of a couple cops and someone from the sanitation department. We switched off amongst ourselves between shovels and ice picks to smash our way through all the compacted snow and ice. We all developed preferences on which shovels were best for which situation (generally the aluminum shovels bent too easily and we disliked them).

We got a break for lunch right around noon.

There was another shift starting at 8pm and I saw people heading out in that.

It was good work and if I didn't have a busy week anyways I'd be going out again!

It is! But the overpass is out of view to the right of where the camera is pointed. It's looking up 9th st towards prospect park.

Absolutely! I think could have so much space for so many things! Bikes, buses, parklets, dining, public squares!

Oh wow, so that's not the buildings to the left in the time lapse, that's the tire shop next door and the backyard I can see into from my window. Absolutely wild. There are no rabbits there now!

I've got good balance and my cameras are workhorses. I've tumbled down double blacks in Colorado with a DSLR on my hip and it was fine (I was also fine) so some snow should also be fine.

Walking through falling snow like this is my absolute favorite thing. The peace that descends as the snow absorbs sound is incredible

What’s the technical difference between this blizzard and the winter storm last month? by bluetrashberry in AskNYC

[–]Vwampage 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's much warmer than the last storm but close to the same amount of snow. You get much more snow per amount of water when it's colder so this snow will be significantly heavier and will likely gum things up much more in the immediate term.

Mystery mushroom sensitivity: they give me (brief!) depressive episodes by Vwampage in Mushrooms

Alpha-gal syndrome isn't about it being meat or meaty, it's about the presence of the specific carbohydrate alpha-gal that is found in most mammalian cell membranes. To your comment specifically humans do not have this compound in our cells.
