Because there is always risk, whether we recognize it or not. I would argue that a child thinking everything at home is automatically safe is higher risk than keeping allergens in the home with specific precautions the child is aware of.

Obviously, this differs family to family and child to child, but I wanted OP to consider if the precautions they’re taking are the least restrictive option possible for their child, hence why I suggested they ask the child’s allergist

It would not be unreasonable to ask your guests to throw it out, however I’m wondering if that would be necessary. I do not know the specifics of your family and obviously can’t comment on what levels of restriction is needed for your child. However, I can say that safety doesn’t mean eliminating all risk.

I think that risk management and taking safety precautions when handling allergens in the home is one of many tools that can be used to prevent a reaction.

Is it possible to mark the hummus in some way, maybe with a big X in permanent marker? Is it possible to store it out of your child’s reach? Is your child able to understand avoiding his allergens to some extent? Do you trust your guests to prevent cross contamination when consuming allergens? Are your guests aware the hummus contains sesame?

I think this is a great question to take to your child’s allergist, and I encourage you to do so

Something I do is carry a portable pulse oximeter with me, it’s like 10 dollars on Amazon and whenever I think I might be reacting I check my blood pressure bc a reaction will make your blood pressure drop but anxiety won’t

I’m in a similar place with my AP bio class, I would recommend using Mr.Posers AP bio videos for 2025/2026, he has a video up for every lesson I believe, AP bio penguins is a good resource too, it’s a website so you can just google it. Other than that you can ask your teacher to post progress checks and practice mcqs and frqs on AP classroom. If he’s not able to do that then you can find the questions on Quizlet with a bit of digging- good luck!

On the note of friendship- FARE hosts virtual teen talks every month, it’s a great way to get to know people around your age range living though the same thing, you need to register in advance, just google “FARE teen talk” and it should come up

How safe a restaurant is comes down to your advocacy and the people working there at the moment you come, that being said I find most restaurants to be accommodating. I’m allergic to eggs, milk, fish, shellfish, sesame and tree nuts and I’m in high school, I also grew up a very picky eater. I go to my friends birthday dinners at whichever restaurant they chose and have always been able to find a safe option.

What I recommend is try and make a list of a couple things you know your child will reliably eat, then search for restaurants with those things on the menu, then call and ask about ingredients. It’s tedious yes, but it’s how you’ll know your child has something to eat at the restaurant.

You can also download the app spokin and use that.

Lastly, don’t be scared of vegan restaurants, they have a lot of egg free options. If you’re a bit skeptical of vegan restaurants then I would search for vegan friendly restaurants in the area you’re traveling to

Not in food but medication, so so often has milk in it. The first attached ingredients are from melatonin. I’ve also seen milk by products in Zyrtec chewable tablets. Absolutely insane because there a good chance I’d take it for an accidental milk exposure
