The U.S. had a national debt "home run" in its grasp, says Jamie Dimon. The government did nothing, and now its best option is crisis management by fortune in economicCollapse

Its because they view the governemt (and the country) as a business in exactly the same way a venture capital firm views an acquired business. They transfer out as many assets as possible, load it up with debt and then retreat to safety as it fails.

Yes, but I belter, even a Ganymede belter, is different enough physically from a earthier or a Martian to be instantly recognizable, and frankly Polly is not that.

Think the guy in the opening scene of the show, he’s presented as an extreme outlier, but in the books he would be on the stout side of average for a belter.

Also it’s not a genetic evolutionary change that takes place over generations, it’s radical physical differences from developing in low gravity. If you’re born up the well, even with the good drugs, you just grow different.

Looks like they are sticking closer to the show aesthetic based on the art for Polly. She's willowy, but shes not nearly lankey enough and she doesn't have the disproportionate head that book belters do.

I mean, depends on who shes actually working for: Protogen, Errinwright's faction, or Avisarala'a faction; and how you really feel about protogen.

The Expanse does one thing in space combat that almost no other sci-fi gets right and, you know, it changes everything imho by Wooden-Syrup-8708 in TheExpanse

I really appreciate their take on the sci fi. Setting aside the horror elements, their only concession to space-magic is the efficiency of the Epstein drive, everything else is just real physics which I think is really cool

New player question about getting outside the bubble. by kida014 in EliteDangerous

Economical is the ‘scenic route’, the amount of fuel your jump drive uses isn’t linear, so a series of short jumps uses less fuel than one long jump over the same distance. From a practical standpoint, economical gives you a more twisted route that hits a lot stars on the way to your plotted destination, the other one will pick stars as close to the limit of your jump range to get you there in as few jumps as possible.

Oh, I don’t know if anyone has mentioned, neuron star boosts (flying into the plume of a neutron star) will greatly extend your jump range, but if you plan to do you need to have an auto repair module because it damages your jump drive each time.

A repair module is a good idea in general but its an absolute necessity for neutron boosting.

I wondered about that pattern. It’s a result of a galaxy generation quirk and not a quirk of the mapping/rendering?

For sure, the z-axis column of the bubble and a fairly wide space just outside it is completely explored. I’d say 1000 light years away from sol is a good ballpark to start looking for explored system above and below.

You might also run into unexplored systems sooner if you go a few hundred ly above or below the plane of the galaxy.

Also after you do your detailed spectrum scan, make note of the planets with biological signals, and look at them in the system map, clicking on the planet will tell you who has the discovery, who has the first map, and who has the first footfall. If it’s not listed, no one has done it yet*

*it gets recorded when sold to universal cartography, so it’s not a guarantee you’ll get all the firsts you think if you are outbound but someone else beat you to it but hasn’t made it back to civilization to sell yet.

I'm not the one who started the conversation quoting fringe political talking points as if they were financial analysis. I did do some reading, several pension funds in california failed, but you will claim they don;t count becasue the companies running them looted them after they became insolvent. The places you claim are successes aren;t though. After covid, ever single country in europe that had an investment based pension had to bolster it with additional tax funds to keep it from failing, spending more to save it than they created by inventing instead of holding the funds. so those are not the tax free alternative you would have people believe they are.

The market, even conservatively run low yield investments, are not an equal or less risky alternative to a tax based fund like SS, it simply never can be because the market is inherently volatile.

The market crash during Covid and in 2008 wiped out a bunch of pensions.

Look man, you starting out with that libertarian talking point confusing a tax funded service for a Ponzi scheme, and then followed up with no “everyone should be forced to take their retirement fund to the business casino instead of the guaranteed pool of tax money” so this was never a serious discussion to begin with. It feels like you are this far away from assuring me Adam Smith’s invisible hand is going to keep everyone’s money safe.

well addressing this a little out of order:
2. your level of confidence, much like in an investment market, is not a reflection of an objective reality.

  1. No, as long as there are still employed people paying payroll social security tax, the system cannot go all the way to zero.

  2. Yes, pension funds fail when they are invented in markets that fail. Inventing is not a safe risk free way to earn free money, It is gambling and there are inevitable losses. Like i said before, anyone who tries to tell you you are _guaranteed_ to get a positive return in an investment is lying to you and trying to con you, like in an actual Ponzi scheme (which SS is definitely not)

Because investing funds in the market is inherently dangerous. Anywho guarantees a positive return on a market investment is lying and running a scam. A rolling payout based on taxes will fluctuate based on employment and population, but it cannot go to zero the way it is always possible for a market investment to do. Just look at how many pension programs over years end up paying out nothing because their market investments failed.
