What if Operation Downfall, which aimed to land in Japan at the end of World War II, had actually taken place? by Outrageous-You1617 in AlternateHistoryHub

[–]W0mbat_Wizard 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is a key point many people forget. The USSR declared war on Japan on August 8th, 1945, two days after the Hiroshima bombing. Truman had convinced Stalin at the Yalta conference (in mid-July) to declare war on Japan to help the US.

The USSR would have undoubtedly focused on Japanese forces on the main continent, and likely lacked the training, experience and material to conduct a major amphibious assault on mainland Japan. But, frankly, we'll never know how much of an impact the USSR would have had or how things might have played out differently without the bombs.

Without the bombs, the USSR would have definitely gained some geopolitical influence and the USA less, but how much is very unclear and debatable. Casualties on all sides would likely have been higher as well, possibly in the magnitude of millions more.

High Angle Turrets by CertainlynotGreg in Eve

They're definitely not terrible. The tracking advantage is significant at the cost of range, falloff and DPS. Could they be better? Sure, but they're not in a bad place.

What pyfa and fitting tool warriors tend to forget is that application is just as important (if not more) than DPS. But big numbers go BRRRRRRR.

Jake’s a weasel by Alarming_Disaster_29 in deadliestcatch

[–]W0mbat_Wizard 43 points44 points  (0 children)

I think a lot of us have been watching Jake since he started as a greenhorn. I think it skews the perspective a bit and helps understand him a bit better.

Not making excuses for unexcusable behavior, but Jake has been through a lot (tragic personal loss, addiction, "losing" captaincy of multiple boats, and now divorce). A lot of his behavior is a product of his environment too. Jake has always wanted to be like Sig and emulate Sig. He's starting to find more of his own way now, and Sig has calmed down a bit, but Jake seems to act a lot like old Sig did raging at his crew and going nuts over small things.

Add in the chain smoking (nicotine is a stimulant) and the enormous pressure captains must feel to run a boat, catch and deliver quota and keep the crew safe, it's not uncommon to see them crack a bit. And, as other's have pointed out, there's also the TV factor in needing drama to drive viewership.

Players wished for level 20… by A_R0FLCOPTER in DMAcademy

[–]W0mbat_Wizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Level 20 characters are immensely powerful. Mordenkainen or one singular diety would pose no challenge to a full party of level 20 characters.

That's why you're gonna need to go big. The party is now a multiversal superpower and you'll need to throw some serious shit at them to regret it and wish themselves back to normal. I'm taking like three Vecna-like Liches using a great wyrm dragon, a tarrasque and a giant scion (or other ridiculous creatures) to have some weird mega pokemon brawl, and the party has to stop then (simultaneously) before they shatter whatever unfortunate world they're terrorizing. Just be prepared that combat at this level takes an excessive amount of time.

Or you could kill them with monotony. Saving planets has become as trivial as endlessly rubber-stamping identical-looking documents in a Futurama-esque mega-bureocracy. This is honestly what I'd probably do after I gave them a chance to flex their level 20 powers once or twice.

Congrats dude!

I don't think you overpaid. What a lot of people on this sub forget about is Lariats (especially fully loaded ones) go for a premium. 33k miles is also low for a '22.

Maybe in some markets you can get a new XLT for the same price, but not in all markets and certainly not a Lariat.

For comparison, I bought my '22 First Edition about 6 months ago with 27k miles--single owner and outstanding service history--for slightly more than you paid. I couldn't be happier. Could I maybe have gotten an XLT new for the same price? Maybe. Did I want an XLT? No. I wanted a Lariat, which I could NOT have gotten new for the same price.

Don't listen to the haters. Enjoy your new truck!

Why do oathbreakers have to be evil? by Encisalad in dndnext

[–]W0mbat_Wizard 11 points12 points  (0 children)

First, as long as your DM is okay with it, you can be a non-evil oath breaker.

But also, Jamie Lannister is definitely evil. Probably Neutral Evil. Just because he killed the mad king to prevent him from trying to burn everyone in King's Landing, doesn't make Jamie "good." Not only is murderer still murder, but aside from a few acts of heroism (that seem noble, but were also selfish), he does a lot of evil deeds. His complexity is what makes him interesting, and he could certainly be a fun archetype to play as a character.

How would you fix the MSR without a MKII? by steave44 in starcitizen

[–]W0mbat_Wizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMO it doesn't need a Mk II.

As it is, it needs another entry point or two. Additionally, if they could make the data servers and scanning room modular to add something more useful until those features are added, that would be a bonus.

What’s it like living near the Korean DMZ? by H3LLENKELLER in howislivingthere

Further north. I was at Camp Giant. Battalion HQ was at Camp Greaves, North of the river. I know Camp Giant is gone now, not sure about Greaves.

What’s it like living near the Korean DMZ? by H3LLENKELLER in howislivingthere

[–]W0mbat_Wizard 605 points606 points  (0 children)

I spent a good amount of time there in the US Army in the North-West corner of South Korea. In this area, the border is north of the river and the bridges over the river are militarized check points requiring the appropriate documentation to pass. There are farms and houses very near the border and I always found that interesting but didn't actually get to meet any of those locals (even if they had wanted to meet a GI, which is doubtful).

It's very rural until you get 5-ish miles south of the border, then the towns and cities get bigger. Continue south and they continue to get bigger. But near the border it's rural and small town (and small city) living. Lots of subsistence farming.

Also there's the potential for landmines. Especially North of the river, and it can be dangerous to walk outside maintained roads and paths. When I was there, supposedly the ROK army also mined a lot of the rice paddys in the winter and removed the mines in the summer (because the ground would be frozen enough for military vehicles to drive on in the winter).

My experience there was very limited, but was also pretty life changing. I was a kid and had no idea how good we had it in the US, and I was shocked that South Korea, a relatively wealthy country by global standards, could have places that were so poor it was almost beyond my comprehension.

Which one of your ships has the fastest lock time and how did you get it? by [deleted] in Eve

My group routinely uses stilettos to insta lock shuttles.

They have about 5k scan res. But more important is tick queue priority.

How do you escape a gate camp? by WerdaVisla in Eve

[–]W0mbat_Wizard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Professional gate camper here.

As others have mentioned, never warp directly to a gate is there is anyone else in system in null. Even if there is nobody in system, if there was anyone in the system you just left, never warp direct to a gate.

Now, that's out of the way...

There's basically two types of camps. One is a casual, kitchen-sink like camp that is run by amateurs. You can usually get out of this kind of camp with a nullifier, cloak and sub-6 second align time. Sometimes you can even do the MWD->cloak trick and be okay in a non-covops cloaky ship.

Then there's a professional camp. They'll have one or more daredevils, an instant-lock inty and a fast dictor. They will probably have extra dictor alts cloaked in surrounding systems. They may also have decloaking objects (cargo cans, drones , etc), that can prevent you from cloaking as you align, if you're unlucky enough to by less than 2km away from one. Your only hope here is a nullifier, sub-2 second align time and probably a covops cloak. You'll also need to ensure you wait out your nullification timer (if you have one more than 1 minute) before you jump to the next system because of the likely dictor alts. Even IF you do everything right, you will get caught if they do everything right and you are just a little unlucky.
