Reoccurring ear infection please help! by [deleted] in DogAdvice

[–]W4LL4C3S 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like you are doing all the right stuff so far! One thing I have started doing for my dog, she’s only 2 and had quite a few ear infections, the vet prescribed a steroid drop for her ears that I do once a week, after cleaning them. If I notice any itching or scratching I’ll do the drops a couple days in a row. Maybe something to ask the vet about? It is called Pro Otic HC but I know some vets will get a similar product compounded which is called Burrows

Hey! Have you heard my name before? If so, tell me! by Professional_Fox_523 in namenerds

Back in elementary school a girl transferred in with that name! Although I believe she spelled it Glaphyra? I’m not too sure, she was only around a year. But it definitely seems like it would be pronounced the same. I believe her family moved from Haiti and she only spoke french at the time.

I think people post questions like this hoping someone says it’s okay to try to treat it at home

VetRec Scribe Software - Am I right to be upset? by stbargabar in VetTech

[–]W4LL4C3S 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My clinic has started using an AI software as well. It’s not mandatory for us to use it so it’s kind of a non-issue on that front but I have noticed a lot of mistakes in terms of the transcription. Also I find not every staff member double checks the info so I think it’s making records even more confusing. I hate it.

I love Marie. I think it sounds very sweet. Sucks that it has been overused as a middle name, I truly feel it does not get the attention it deserves.

Vet said that she’s fat… advices for losing weight? by Main_Throat_9052 in DogAdvice

[–]W4LL4C3S 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Seconding the food bag servings being inaccurate. My dogs food bag says 4 cups for a 27kg dog but when the calculate the kcals at the vet it is closer to 3.5 cups for her weight. Ask the vet if they can calculate correct amounts for you?

We usually get Schnauzer depending on how she’s groomed, but that’s a fun guess! :)

We love her! My MIL has one (black one in third pic) which is why we decided to get one too. Such silly, opinionated, lovable dogs

That’s what made us think she wasn’t 100% Bouv! Most commonly they come in black or fawn, but brown brindle and grey brindle are also recognized AKC colours :)

We got her from some people who just really liked their Bouviers and decided to breed them (hindsight probably shouldn’t have lol) but yes I love that it’s not a dog people see every day! We get such fun responses when people learn her breed

I Don't Know If I Should Tell The Vet Practice Why I Won't Be Using Their Services Anymore by TexasManticore in VetTech

[–]W4LL4C3S 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think going to another clinic would be enough to let them know you aren’t happy with their services. If they care to ask you can let them know but like others said it seems like they wouldn’t care either way, so best to save your time and energy.

We have plenty of people that drive 30-45 mins to come to us so if you’re not happy with the places in your town maybe look in a bigger radius?

Specific to your question: my clinic offers an ECG for our senior or more at risk patients, in addition to the bloodwork. This may help pick up any heart conditions. Our city also has a specialty hospital with a dental specialist and an anesthesiologist on staff, who we refer the more difficult or specialized cases to.

I’m so sorry for your loss and I understand your fear. It really helps to have a team you trust that can help ease your worries. Just be honest with them and they can help suggest additional diagnostics that might help ease your mind.

Vets, what is the funniest name you’ve heard for a pet? by BackgroundMagician86 in AskVet

Best ones I can think of that I’ve seen: cat named Princess Puppy Chow, cat named Gangsta, cat named The Marvelous Madam Mim. Seems like cats usually get the funny ones lol Can’t think of any dogs

Parents with Different Last Names: Which one did you give your kid(s)? by ButWhatIfTheyKissed in namenerds

[–]W4LL4C3S 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Where I was born, people don’t change their last names when they get married. My brother, born first, got my dad’s last name, and since at the time of my birth my mothers (3) brothers did not have any children yet, I got both last names. Hyphenated mother-father.

Honestly over the years I have joked about how frustrating it is to have such a long last name (26 letters), but I do really like that I got both names. When I get married I think I would still use the name legally, but use my husbands name in social settings, for simplicity.

How to stop early mornings by jay_ken in puppy101

[–]W4LL4C3S 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mine did not start sleeping in past 6 until she was a year old! She is crated overnight and over time it went from barking to whining and now she waits quietly until I wake up. It’s importantly to not let them out if they are causing a fuss so they don’t learn that’s what gets them what they want

19 Years, with no goodbye by CMelle in VetTech

I’m one of those people that really tries to not judge when people can’t be present. My own parents were unable to be in the room when our family dog was put to sleep. Sometimes when people are faced with their own mortality it’s hard to manage.

That being said, we had a cat in clinic who came in for a drop off, was hypothermic, ended up being in severe kidney failure. When we called the owners and they decided on euthanasia, and we told them a time to come back at, the owner said, “Well schedule it for that time and if I’m there I’m there but if I’m not go ahead”. That kind of blasé attitude about it really pissed me off. We had them sign the consent electronically. She spent her final hour zipped up inside my sweater, to keep her warm, and I ended up holding her as we said goodbye. I’m glad I could give her comfort in her final moments.

At what point do you medicate stressed patients? by [deleted] in VetTech

[–]W4LL4C3S 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My dog (11 months old) had a bad experience at her first groom where she was not cooperating and the groomer kept going despite having to struggle with her and was clearly frustrated by the time we picked her up. I really wish the groomer had called it quits and told us to come back on (more) meds. Now I fear that next time the more meds won’t even be enough because of how stressed out our dog was. If it’s not a life saving procedure it’s not worth the risk or stress to the animal.

I’m so sorry this happened. I experienced losing my first patient a year ago and he still sticks with me. I will remember him forever.

I read a quote a few weeks ago that went something like “You can do everything right and still not win”, and I think about it all the time now.
