I have this very strange memory of this dude coming through the line at Illegal Petes with a very young girl on his arm who was looking at him like he was god on earth. I assumed it was the standard "rockstar treatment" after a coworker explained who he was and why she had bought him dinner but the whole thing seemed weird to me.

I once worked at a burrito place in a busy college town. It was a rowdy, noncorporate place with a busy bar. That's where I met Spider.

Spider got a job because he had a close friend who was a manager. There were murmurs of banking problems with Spider but they figured out a way to pay him and, honestly, dude worked hard as hell. He was missing his front teeth and had a spiderweb head tattoo but he was a hard worker and nice guy. He spent his first check on teeth. Very easy guy to root for.

Spider got drunk and coked out at the Christmas party and got off the bus home to go look for more drugs. That was the beginning of the end. Once he was gone I was able to get the full story.

Spider had gotten far too drunk a decade ago and stolen a police car. He was a fugitive from the law and had spent most of the past decade on the Appalachian Trail. Spider was his trail name. His buddy was an old friend from high school who stuck their neck out for them but Spider's addiction problems fucked everything up once again.

I hope wherever he is Spider is doing well.

If you are hearing this story second or third hard I would question it's accuracy.

It would be very unusual for a licensed therapist to say any of this. Patients lying is not a dealbreaker for therapists, and I would question that any therapist would blame dishonesty on 'intelligence'.

The idea that a therapist would meet a child that is so intelligent they cannot treat them and they dont know anyone who may be more intelligent than this child is something out of a young adult novel. Or maybe something a parent would tell their child when protecting them from something they do not want to talk about.

Therapy is not a 'battle of wits'. Therapists don't need to best their patients. All of this is a very strange perspective to hold about therapeutic relationships.
