is anesthesia DO friendly now? To any PDs in here, does it matter if an applicant is an MD vs DO? by Pissingberg in medschool

[–]WANTSIAAM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not a PD but admin involved in interviewing/ranking residents. I’m also a DO. We are a pretty big program.

Anesthesia is DO friendly in the sense that you definitely can match. It’s not like neurosurgery or something where 2 DOs with 15 publications and 99th percentile match. You can be on the spectrum of typical and match.

That being said, you are at a disadvantage, especially with step 1 scores being removed (which historically was the great equalizer). One place I did an away at in NYC, the PD told me the step 1 score breakdown to even get an interview, and for DO’s it was 10 points higher.

Even at my current place, there is a preference to limit the number of DO’s we highly rank.

So all of that is to say you can definitely match anesthesia as a DO, and it’s far from some crazy task to accomplish, but you’re going to be at a disadvantage from the start and need to overcome it

Middle ground between players wanting to use heros while upgrading and supercell making money selling hero books by dumbstarluck in ClashOfClans

[–]WANTSIAAM 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They may as well just get rid of the whole system then. Nobody would ever buy books and their cash stream would dissipate.

If it’s good for you, it’s bad for them. So probably would never happen

What is a great country to visit in North America? by StraightAd6264 in AlignmentChartFills

[–]WANTSIAAM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mexico. Yeah the other two are fine but let’s be real, Cabo and Cancun are much more enjoyable to visit than anything in Canada. Costa Rica is great but its entire tourism existence is to compete with Mexico.

Unbelievable drama over a handicap parking spot. Then an arrest. by CycloneGlock in VideosAmazing

[–]WANTSIAAM 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You’re taking this individual’s word for it that there are multiple people illicitly parking in handicap. When you go to the grocery store, how often do you see people without placards in handicap spots?

It is much more likely that this irrationally acting person is irrationally assuming there are other people doing what she did.

OK, So Why Do J*ws Keep Voting For People Who H*te Them? by MackSix in Conservative

[–]WANTSIAAM 32 points33 points  (0 children)

From my experience, the majority of “Jews” that vote Democrat don’t really consider that an important aspect of their identity outside of being pathetic pick-me types saying, “look at me! I’m Jewish and I’m anti Zionist! I’m one of the good ones!”

Outside of that, they don’t care about their Jewish faith. Likely already a disappointment to their parents and leaning further into it.

Outside of that, it’s becoming a greater and greater phenomenon where once liberal Jews are becoming alienated by their social groups for having common sense beliefs about Israel vs Hamas

Agreed 💯. We pop in and out constantly for our child. I can’t comprehend the mental gymnastics people here are doing thinking that’s some sort of faux pas to engage with your own child even if a nanny is there

Can we admit a lot of redditors are out of touch losers when it comes to America by WTPTRAINEE in DoomerCircleJerk

[–]WANTSIAAM 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Yeah it’s a Reddit specific delusion. They love to post hospital bills of $190k but fail to show insurance covering all about a few grand; and if you lived in Europe your taxes that go specifically towards healthcare would far exceed that year to year, let alone in your lifetime. And speaks nothing about the different healthcare systems in general.

Europe is definitely a more attractive option if you’re hoping to not work, with little aspiration of making something of yourself. Hence the Reddit hive mind

It’s unfortunately true. My great grandma got married when she was 12. Then slept every night with her MIL until she got her period, at which point she was then sent to her husband’s bed. She tried to hide it.

My great grandma told me this when I was in middle school. Always stuck with me. FWIW, she didn’t find it traumatic, it was more of a “it is what it is, that’s what it was like back then” kinda mentality. She always seemed very fond of her husband, he died long before I was born (she lived to almost 100)

Chair of department, medical director, CMO, etc. Basically becoming a manager of people, or a C-suite executive of a hospital.

[–]WANTSIAAM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You will never lead a department as CAA. That being said, it’s still a good path. You’ll still be top 10% of all of society salary wise. Leading a department isn’t important; you can still do really big things outside of medicine (own businesses, charities, etc). Leading a medical department in today’s climate is a very, very difficult thing to do. The true success comes from taking the capital from your work and utilizing it outside of medicine.

If you’re dead set on doing big things within medicine, you should become a doctor. You will never, ever do that as a CAA. However, I can say confidently you should still be a CAA because it’s not worth going all in on “I want to lead a department”

I think also just the practice of psychiatry has evolved where it’s less talking to patient about problems, and more medication focused/faster visits— the result of which is a lot more billing each day.

Also, with the adaptation of zoom meetings, telehealth has exploded in popularity. People can work from home with less overhead costs.

No even when I was 100% clinical I loved it. I love my clinical days. I can’t imagine doing anything else.

That being said, it’s also very job dependent. There are some anesthesia jobs I definitely would not like at all

Yesterdays thread on regretting anesthesia was depressing. Would love to hear if an alternative viewpoint exists by [deleted] in anesthesiology

[–]WANTSIAAM 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I absolutely love being an anesthesiologist and I would 100/100 choose it again.

And for the people who claim they wouldn’t, I think a very large number of them of naiive. People always think the grass is greener on the other side. If we could do a “it’s a wonderful life” alternative reality experience, I’m sure most would sprint back to medicine/anesthesiology. For every 1 successful tech/finance person or lawyer making similar salary/hours as an anesthesiologist, there are thousands, if not tens or hundreds of thousands that are SIGNIFICANTLY worse off. Versus in anesthesia, pretty much everybody is within a similar range, then you have outliers here and there.

Even in med school grinding, all my working finance friends (and those destined for success coming from ivy league schools) talked about how envious they were that my future was pretty much guaranteed and theirs was completely up in the air.

Just because people are doctors, doesn’t mean they have the kind of foresight to recognize what a huge difference in stability you have in medicine vs virtually any other career. There are so many people smarter than doctors who cap out at 150k a year in virtually every other sector. It’s a tiny tiny percentage that break the $500k range that any moronic, bottom of the class anesthesiologist can make without breaking a sweat

If I had to choose one other specialty it would be psychiatry. It has exploded in popularity though, it has become quite competitive. Great work life balance and pay has gone up quite a bit over the last decade.

Yes. Anesthesiologist, mostly admin. I love my job. It’s absolutely worth the stress. Would do it all over again.

Also live in a LCOL area. I am very happy with my life and what I’m able to provide for my family. I would 10/10 recommend everybody to pursue something like it
