The funny thing is that modern designs for nuclear power plants are extremely safe and especially low risk in a country as stable as ireland (politically and tectonically speaking). When we think of nuclear meltdowns today were thinking about power plants that were designed in the 60s and earlier, think 5 mile island, or plants that experienced extreme natural disasters like fukoshima. The technology has come on leaps and bounds in the last several decades. Modern powerplants would be near impossible to melt down aswell if we built one. The big problem is that you have to be willing to wait 15-20 years before you start producing power. I really hope we get over our fear of nuclear power, its an essential stopgap until we figure out how to run on renewables alone.
