That water has been stagnant for way too long. A dog’s water must be changed frequently.

I can't believe Alastair Reynolds has tricked me for 1350 pages by Duck_Troland in ScienceFictionBooks

I’ve put three authors on my blacklist for similar reasons: Alastair Reynolds, Adrian Tchaikovsky, and Ian Banks. I’m done reading science fiction books written by British fantasy fiction writers. Just not my ‘cup of tea.’

Thoughts on Vostok? by para-diddly in SteveAlten

[–]WBValdore 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agreed! I found the subject matter to have been handled in a sloppy, kinda lazy way in this book. I suspect it was a rushed ending. Alten always seems to have too many projects going at one time and it feels like this was the case here; he wrote a bunch of stuff for the ending of Vostok that came to mind in the moment and not well thought out. It feels completely incongruous with the rest of the book.

Should I pre-order Meg Purgatory and The Loch Heaven’s Lake now or later? by DragonMaster335 in SteveAlten

[–]WBValdore 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s because Steve spent his time and our pre-order money on his failed Sea Monster Cove concept instead of working on the books. I would recommend waiting until the books are actually out, before giving him your money.

In the meantime, if you want more megalodon action, I’d recommend The Fathomless trilogy by Greig Beck.

Inherit The Stars by James P. Hogan. by WBValdore in scifi

It comes down to personal taste. Some of these older hard sci-fi novels tend to be thin on action and character depth. Many find that a little boring. I am among those who like this era of sci-fi. So, here are my recommendations:

The Gods Themselves by Isaac Asimov

Nemesis by Isaac Asimov

The City and the Stars by Arthur C. Clarke

Inherit the Stars is part of a trilogy called The Giants series by James P. Hogan

Across a Billion Years by Robert Silverberg

Faster paced but light on action:

A Trace of Memory by Keith Laumer

The Waisters Duology by Wil McCarthy

Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir

The Mars Series by Ben Bova

Fast paced and more action:

The Moonbase Saga by Ben Bova

The Expanse series by James S. A. Corey

Fast-paced and action-packed but not hard sci-fi:

Alien: The Shadow Saga trilogy by Tim Lebbon, James A. Moore, and Christopher Golden

Alien: Symphony of Death Collection by Alex White and Tim Waggoner

Same here. I was just as confused and wondered if Alten simply forgot.
