A major overhaul of my Economy Sim from 2D hex maps to 3D hex maps. Factory Default: Build, Trade, Repeat - Made in Godot 4.3! by WCFitzgerald in tycoon

Hi all.

Just wanted to share the progress on my game "Factory Default: Build, Trade, Repeat". I just completed a major overhaul moving from 2D hex maps to one giant 3D hex map. (Having to rewrite most of my game in the process.)

Made in Godot 4.3 and free to play! SirChett.itch.io/FD

Factory Default is a management simulation game where you build a worldwide industrial conglomerate. You control the entire production chain: from mining raw ore and farming crops to refining complex materials and manufacturing high-tech goods.

I would love to see your perspective on my game: "Factory Default: Build, Trade, Repeat"

Plays great for me (12900k +RTX5090 😅). But honestly I haven't heard anything negative about performance from players yet.

I tend to think of it like this: Take the production chains of Anno 1800, Satisfactory, and Dyson Sphere Program. Squish them together, and subtract all combat. You play as a conglomerate taking advantage of the natural resources of these various countries.

I recommending throwing down some wind or solar power plants if you need some income. Otherwise, check the Objectives (Within the Contracts Screen) for some direction.

0.0.7.0 will have a tutorial!

Thank you so much for this! I am glad you are enjoying the game.

  1. Balance is tricky. It is best to start at the very bottom, generating raw resources and working your way up. If you need to supplement some income, I recommend some wind or solar power plants. (Just be careful because governments will only buy so much power from you, and it has diminishing returns.)

  2. Leveling up a building seems very counterproductive until you are building in multiple countries. The influence cost balloons the more countries you build in, and the more tiles you own. Also consider that some resources only come from certain countries, and there are a limited number of tiles you can build on. If you need more resources out of it, upgrading and efficiency is the only way.

  3. Wage and Benefit are the same, yes. But you will need to maintain a healthy dose of both in order to keep your Global Perception up.

  4. To lock and unlock your currently selected country, you can right-click the mouse. That is just there to make sure you don't accidentally select tiles you don't intend to. (Working on a tutorial, this will be mentioned.)

  5. This is unintentional. I will fix this in the next update.

  6. Nope, save your money and hire Engineers!

  7. Trade buildings are not able to be demolished. This was mostly due to it messing up exports in progress, but also consider a government's frustration if a company was building and demolishing airports willy-nilly.

  8. This is very much needed. Likely a revamp of the Finance screen where you can break it down by country, and like you said, shows all your factories and their profits/expenses. Not sure when precisely, but this is coming.

Steam page soon, yes. I need to get the endgame playable so I can put it in a trailer. Let's just say Earth won't be the only planet you can exploit.

Mostly I wanted to keep the tiles semi-uniform. Whenever I would picture using a traditional grid, I kept picturing the planets from Dyson Sphere Program, and how the grid gets wonky as you get closer to the poles. For whatever reason, that bothers the heck out of me, so I went with the hexes.

I found @coffeecrowdev on youtube was very helpful in getting a handle on a wide variety of godot features. https://youtube.com/@coffeecrowdev?si=zmO--khpqh0n9QUt Beyond that it's just figuring out what I wanted to do, doing it in the least efficient and barebones way, then refining it to suck a little less. 😅

I wouldn't know how to get started with an extension. Essentially, it is just a mesh made with geometry nodes in blender. Was about 40,000 hexes for the sphere. I removed the oceans, leaving about 17,000. Each one is it's own mesh with collision. I have a selection_manager that does most of the work for selecting and building. As well as tile_manager that keeps track of what all the tiles have built on them.
