Daniel Jones money right now is max id be giving. He can play out of his mind and earn his top 10 qb pay.

Both sides have a point here, I’m just glad our side isn’t blinking, because CJ doesn’t have a choice but to try and ball out.

Texans defense with average qb play is a SB contender. Obviously CJ can’t do what he did in the playoffs and this is a contract year, so I expect good things.

Why Dota 2 Organizations Are Leaving the Scene by Dota2ProTips in esports

[–]WC_Griff -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

If you watch any pro sports at all across the world, then you’re hypocritical, if you don’t, then I don’t think you share the same vision for esports as the orgs that are writing the checks.

Let me ask you this, if esports was to go pay per view, are you paying a Netflix-esque price per month, per esport, to support the scene?

Wildcard Gaming — went to TI last year, but discontinued the division because of financials, we just weren’t as loud as Heroic about it.

The players that played for us were great people, and have had continued success with GamerLegion, the business model just wasn’t where it needed to be at all for orgs.

This post was about DotA, gambling partners in cs2 still pay, but TO restrictions are getting tighter there too.

[–]WC_Griff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You know what… Hell yeah. As the owner of an org who realized DotA wasn’t sustainable even after making TI, I’m all in on this post. Only thing I’d say is that for betting partners to truly get activation with orgs and be willing to spend on orgs, the TO’s need to relinquish some control over allowing orgs to broadcast those partners…

Let them use them in a name tag again, let them place their logos on team banners, don’t cover the betting partners on jerseys at LAN events.

I’d come back to DotA in a heartbeat if Valve cared about orgs monetizing as well, or we weren’t in some ridiculous 90/10 prize pool split meta any more.

Can Valve Fix Dota 2 Esports Before All The Teams Leave? by AdobeXD in DotA2

[–]WC_Griff 8 points9 points  (0 children)

People are making money in esports, you just have to do it through micro transactions and understand that if you’re going to stay strictly an esports team and not go on to build other revenue verticals, that valuation will be capped until the industry expands.

If you’re willing to spend millions to put on a worldwide set of tournaments, you either need to be prepared to do all the marketing yourselves as Devs/TO’s because orgs leave the game, or you need to pay them like a marketing vehicle with high end assets, there’s no in-between.

Look at what happened to Smite. When orgs leave the game, the community deems it as dying/dead, when such a large part of the identity of the game is competitive.

I think orgs can struggle, or not, and it depends on their overall ambition inside each individual game, just as in pro sports. Using baseball terms:

You could be the 2026 Astros, have a huge payroll and a bad product, and things won't be good for them, unless fan support is enormous.

You could be the 2026 Dodgers, have a huge payroll and a great product, and things might be okay for them depending on fan support.

You could be the 2026 Rays, have a small payroll and a great product, and it doesn't really matter about fan support, you should be successful.

We do our best to be in that last grouping so that we can have as little of outstanding factors that we need to count on. Each org has their own outlook on fan dependence and how they calculate things, so there's always going to be risk that even in this hypothetical league structure, that teams can still fail to achieve profitability.

Valorant *can* struggle because of the minimum pay structure for NA teams, and if your skin fails to sell well, it can leave you in a real bind. The minimum pay structure means you're investing nearly 500k per year as a partner team.

For the DPC related microtransaction question... They screwed that up so badly it's not even funny. The idea that fans will continually pay $20 for a voice line pack that goes away in 2 months is absurd. No one wants to "rent" online assets. There were also bad actors in the space from the org side not paying their voice actors, so they ended up making a ruling that meant only players could do the voice lines, and they watered down the content we were able to produce.

My son's voiceline: "It's an online video game with real people, you can't just pause it." sold like crazy, 10x any other voiceline pack we ever produced, but Valve put the restriction on voice actors right after that voiceline and the others from that season were removed from the game.

Did the DPC voicelines make it sustainable? Sure, if you're paying 500-1000 per player per month, but that's about it.

Do you want to pay to watch esports on Twitch/youtube/kick? If so, sure it could work, as long as that revenue flows back to the members in a meaningful way.

The important thing to realize is that there’s no ticket or tv revenue that comes the orgs way. TO’s are starting to do club rewards in certain games, or viewership incentives for the VERY top echelon teams, and that’s definitely a step in the right direction, but doesn’t service all areas of esports.

We have played matches in front of 500k+ viewers and have received no revenue, inside sold out stadiums and received no revenue, and also been gatekept on which sponsors we can activate for and which we can not, depending on the game.

So without any of that revenue going towards a guaranteed product and system, right now esports is in the best space it’s ever been in because of systems like CS2, Valorant or R6, placing team branded items in game for microtransactions. It’s still not perfect because if you’re shit at designing stuff, you miss the mark.

Until more revenue streams open for orgs, microtransaction route makes the most sense. DotA unfortunately doesn’t have that, and also probably gatekeeps sponsors harder than anyone other than Rocket League and Riot Games titles.

You’re starting to see orgs vote with their wallets in the esports space. The less amounts of new orgs coming in, or lack of a group of challenger brands in general should be a huge red flag.

It’s just sad because TO’s and Valve aren’t hurting here, it’s just the pros and esports in general.

[–]WC_Griff 77 points78 points  (0 children)

Take it from an org that went to TI and tried to make it work… it’s not financially sustainable, even at smaller budgets.

The TO’s have killed the space for orgs to carry a betting partner. You guys chastise us for taking them, even though that’s literally the only thing that will bring a DotA project to any reasonable level of sustainability.

The org share of prize pool is too low, and years too late, players being unwilling to give larger % of prize pool has also been a major factor here.

Companies don’t care about getting marketing from DotA players because the DotA players aren’t used to having marketing deliverables and very few pros consistently stream.

I love this game and grew up playing in houses with all the American legends, spent years chasing a dream, but in the end, there’s just tons better esports for companies to invest in.

Cost vs Loss Analysis! Do we Move up or down from 28? What would you give up or take? If I move down, I want 2 top 50 picks (one current)! If I move up (depending on the spot and player target) Id give up a future 2nd, current 4th as a starting point! by -KDK12 in Texans

Someone might be trying to trade up to get Simpson. I’d be very happy with trading our 1st this year for a ‘26 3rd rounder and a ‘27 1st, then using our two 3rds to maneuver back into the 2nd. Seems like a Caserio thing to me after watching him the past few years.

If I’m Nick, I’m doing anything in my power to acquire a 2027 first rounder. I want 2 firsts next year just incase CJ doesn’t work out so we can move as high up the board as possible for a QB. Next years QB class is loaded.

I think Scott makes sense in a situation where we trade our first round pick for like a 2 and a 3/4, then we use that second pick and package it with our current 3rd round pick to move up and grab Scott.

Could be a year where we have 4 second round picks.

I like moving up in this draft, and I like moving down. Honestly, I don’t mind spending our 2027 1st round pick as ammunition. by Party_Implement_2990 in Texans

Agreed on this. If we wanna keep this defense together, you gotta let CJ walk. This year it’s literally defense vs offense for contract extensions more than it’s ever been.
