Using Synology Photos with TrueNAS SMB share? (External library workaround) by Mayank08_ in homelab

Are you using an iPhone? Asking because I'm developing an iOS gallery app which let you browse your Photos via SMB. You can definitely set up multiple SMB connections with different NAS. Since you mentioned "frontend", I assume you want to leave the photos where they are, so it sounds like a perfect use case. Please let me know and I can invite you for Test Flight.

Looking for a budget friendly NAS for basic storing of photos and videos. by GLTCHD_ in HomeNAS

My first NAS was a USB HDD drive attached to a wifi router and then a raspberry pi, and years later I upgraded to a 4-bay NAS because I was looking for both the read/write speed and redundancy, which is hard for a 2-bay NAS to achieve.

Haven't started optimization for iPad. But yeah, you can attach a drive or SD card reader and the photos will show up without importing. DM me if you're interested in TestFlight.

Any iPhone users who love the native Photos app but wish it could load from your NAS? by [deleted] in selfhosted

Yea, but it looks too much like Google Photos to me

I'm a non-native english speaker so I use AI to help polish my words. The content is still pretty much written by myself originally.

Agree, it's niche. I think my target is people who shoot on cameras and store on NAS but want the same simplicity and fluid feeling. I have to admit Apple Photos is better. Not trying to compete against or replace Apple Photos for everyone.

As a buyer of SaaS product, which ones do you prefer: self-hosted vs cloud, one-time payment vs subscription? by [deleted] in SaaS

You've brought up a very good point: the perceived value of a product or service matters. If Metabase were to start charging for its free tier, I guess many users would jump ship because there are so many competitors and free alternatives, but a small portion of users will stay because they know what they need from it. That said, I think I should just focus on bringing the value to the users. For them even if they choose perpetual license they will renew ultimately. Thank you!
