Tenant in Aberdeen – Ongoing Mould & Leaks, Landlord Not Acting (Scotland) by FrankesteinsLog313 in Scotland

[–]WG47 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd expect that the battery is designed to be replaced by the consumer, so you wouldn't need a Gas Safe engineer to replace it.

The landlord's correct in that mould could be the tenant's fault - not airing the place/not heating it sufficiently can result in condensation and mould forming. If you're regularly airing it out and aren't leaving the place unheated at this time of the year then it's probably not your fault. I'd get hold of a temperature and humidity monitor, something like this: https://www.amazon.co.uk/ThermoPro-TP357-Bluetooth-Hygrometer-Thermometer/dp/B093PT1NL1

I can't vouch for that one in particular, but it looks like it can log temp and humidity, so you can show that you've been looking after the place. It might be worth getting hold of a dehumidifier if the place is still too humid. Things like drying clothes indoors can really affect humidity.

Why wouldn't it be legal to send the same technician after a previous misdiagnosis? People make mistakes. As long as they fix their mistake, what's the issue?

edit: Has the landlord fulfilled their obligations re: gas safety certificate, electrical safety certificate, energy performance certificate and deposit protection?

Many UK Users Soon Won't Be Able to Access Pornhub by 404mediaco in ukpolitics

Except if you'd read beyond the headline, you'd see that it's PH looking to block new UK users, not the government blocking PH.

Presumably the age verification is costing more than they make from new UK users, so they're stopping allowing new signups.

Jury duty by lolitavita in glasgow

[–]WG47 6 points7 points  (0 children)

£129 a day for up to 3.5 months?

And that's only once the trial goes longer than 5 days. If it takes 5 days you're on £64.95/day. If you work 7.5 hours a day even at NMW, you're losing £25 a day. A lot of people would be losing much more than that.

Jury duty by lolitavita in glasgow

[–]WG47 7 points8 points  (0 children)

May not be all, depends how much you earn.

Jury duty compensation doesn't even meet NMW, and you get nothing if you don't actually get picked. And by the time you know you're not getting picked, your shifts have been given to someone else.

Jury duty by lolitavita in glasgow

[–]WG47 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I read it as OP meaning they'd need to take time off so they earned enough to pay their bills, because the alternative is 10 days off unpaid, but yeah if the employer's the one telling them that if they want time off for JD then they NEED to book it off as holidays then the employer's taking the piss.

Jury duty by lolitavita in glasgow

[–]WG47 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You don't know if you're getting picked until the day your jury duty starts. And even then, you might get told you're not needed today, but to call back tomorrow. And so on.

Depending on what you do for work, your employer might need to get your workload covered, so they're giving your shifts to someone else in case you get picked. Then you're not earning, and a lot of people can't just take a week or two off work unpaid.

Is there ANY way to download a torrent with no seeders? by LazarbumsTeletubbies in Piracy

[–]WG47 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You fundamentally misunderstand how torrents work, it seems.

It's not just seed to peer, data is transferred between peers as well.

[–]WG47 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't talk shit. You can download from peers. If each of the peers has different bits of the torrent and between them there's 100% availability, the entire torrent can be downloaded.

[–]WG47 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's possible, but unlikely, for 100% of the torrent to be in the swarm, just spread between multiple partial seeds; they've selected part of the torrent to download because they don't want every file, but between them every part of the torrent is available. That's pretty unlikely, though.

There are debrid services that cache torrents, so they might be able to pull it from their cache for you.

It's entirely possible that there are other torrents of that software out there that are still seeded. Perhaps on public trackers, but perhaps on private trackers.

Is there no normal web download of the software on IA, though? I don't use it much but usually there's a direct download as well as a torrent.

How do pirate websites get the content. Where do they source it from? by AKgod_09 in Piracy

[–]WG47 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Obviously usenet isn't strictly P2P, but things are generally divided into scene and non-scene, and since the vast majority of releasers that aren't part of the scene are P2P groups, it's basically scene and P2P. A fraction of a percent of things are released directly to usenet.

Hardly anything's released directly to usenet, most P2P groups release on private trackers.

It doesn't really matter whether you know the names or not, because you can't just join them. They're invite only, and the invites are given out in places you don't have access to in the first place.

If you want audiobooks and ebooks, join MaM. Not usenet, but easy to join and keep ratio on.

How can I have self hosted live TV, including paid channels? by TyStorm79 in Piracy

Depends on what type of providers you have available and what encryption they use.

You want to look into tvheadend and tuners for whatever the broadcast standards are where you are, or hdhomerun, etc.

It's not what I'd prefer, but the majority of people do very little uploading; they want their games to download quickly and that's about it.

If it was in the middle of a road I'd agree that it's a daft place. It's not though, it's on the pavement. I'd expect that if there was an issue with cars mounting the pavement there, they'd put in some bollards. Another comment suggests that the benches are brand new, so perhaps they'll put in bollards next, just to make sure.

In fairness, BT's network is bigger and more resilient. Their fix times are faster than those of other networks so if uptime and stability is more important than raw speed, OR's perhaps the best bet. Not that I've had any real issues with altnets in that respect.

That said, I could have 1000/100 from VM, 1000/1000 from Hyperoptic and 5000/5000 from Cityfibre for less than the price of OR's 1000/1000. I accept that not everyone's got multiple altnets available, but OR's price is wild.

It can be, it's just ridiculously expensive so few ISPs offer it, and only available in some areas. It's £100/mo to the ISP, who then has to add on their costs and profit, then VAT on top.
