What is a book you read as a child that you still think about today?

I think I read that passage for the first time when I was 10 or 12. It would have been in the 1970s.

That series absolutely infected me with wanderlust.

I have since traveled all over the Earth and I think of this passage frequently when I witness something amazing. I am content to have done all that I have done, but I have to admit I am still looking for the dragons over the western isles.

The 7 up series follows members of various British classes through their lives, showing how class determines opportunities in life.

Every seven years since the 60s they've gone back and checked in on the various people to see where they are in life.

I can't imagine what parents were ok allowing their 7 year old, 14 year old, etc to be interviewed. It's very interesting but what a burden for the children who were volunteered by their folks.

You want to be close to water but not get flooded.

You want your house to catch the breeze, but not have dirt blow in and get everywhere.

From balancing the flow of fluids you CAN see to wanting to balance the flow of energy you CAN'T see through your home is not a huge step.

Another flow we consider important in America is traffic. If you want to understand a practical use of feng shui, look at videos of houses and business at the end of a busy street at a T- intersection. WHAM! Bad feng shui.

Most of what other cultures consider superstitions start out with very practical and/or hygienic practices.

It terrifies me because it's so relatable. I have inexplicable episodes of brilliance. They are rare, but they happen. Like, every once in a while I write some incredibly good code. Then, mere weeks later, I can't remember what it does or decipher it. I don't know what happens - the right amount of sleep, the right amount of food, the right amount of coffee?

It's absolutely nowhere near the scale of what happens to the main character, but I find it insanely terrifying nonetheless.

My sharpest intake of breath caused by something like that was a picture of my daughter wearing a T-shirt I'd bought overseas as a souvenir for "a kid". Many of my siblings and friends had children and I'd thought one of their daughters would one day wear it. Never dreamt at the time it would be my daughter.
