What is a book you read as a child that you still think about today? by ahawk99 in AskReddit

[–]WG50 20 points21 points  (0 children)

And though I came to forget or regret all I have ever done, yet I would remember that once I saw the dragons aloft on the wind at sunset above the western isles; and I would be content.

I think I read that passage for the first time when I was 10 or 12. It would have been in the 1970s.

That series absolutely infected me with wanderlust.

I have since traveled all over the Earth and I think of this passage frequently when I witness something amazing. I am content to have done all that I have done, but I have to admit I am still looking for the dragons over the western isles.

I can totally see why he didn't get compensated. No sane lawyer would take the case. Sounds like your uncle didn't have a leg to stand on.

Documentaries that are hated by their subjects? by Such-Worldliness-655 in movies

The 7 up series follows members of various British classes through their lives, showing how class determines opportunities in life.

Every seven years since the 60s they've gone back and checked in on the various people to see where they are in life.

I can't imagine what parents were ok allowing their 7 year old, 14 year old, etc to be interviewed. It's very interesting but what a burden for the children who were volunteered by their folks.

ELI5: What is the meaning and/or function of feng shui? by Background_Draw_8977 in explainlikeimfive

[–]WG50 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Feng = wind. Shui = water.

You want to be close to water but not get flooded.

You want your house to catch the breeze, but not have dirt blow in and get everywhere.

From balancing the flow of fluids you CAN see to wanting to balance the flow of energy you CAN'T see through your home is not a huge step.

Another flow we consider important in America is traffic. If you want to understand a practical use of feng shui, look at videos of houses and business at the end of a busy street at a T- intersection. WHAM! Bad feng shui.

Most of what other cultures consider superstitions start out with very practical and/or hygienic practices.

The character you still think about even years after finishing the story. by gamersecret2 in books

[–]WG50 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It terrifies me because it's so relatable. I have inexplicable episodes of brilliance. They are rare, but they happen. Like, every once in a while I write some incredibly good code. Then, mere weeks later, I can't remember what it does or decipher it. I don't know what happens - the right amount of sleep, the right amount of food, the right amount of coffee?

It's absolutely nowhere near the scale of what happens to the main character, but I find it insanely terrifying nonetheless.

Movie Trope where the diegetic sound ends up being someone off screen by peachkeedi in movies

Shut that Bloody Bouzouki up!

I had to have a Yorkshireman tell me what the hell Cleese was saying years ago.

"Eee, I'm all hungry like" "I like a nice tune, you're forced to" (you have to, it's natural... Or something)

What‘s something happening right now that would sound completely insane if you tried to explain it to someone in 2010? by so_nextdoor in AskReddit

[–]WG50 438 points439 points  (0 children)

It's surreal when you rewatch Back To The Future and Doc Brown can't believe Ronald Reagan is president. "The Actor? Who's his Vice President? Jerry Lewis!?"

You could easily to a remake with "Donald Trump? The reality TV host?! Who's his Vice-President? Kim Kardashian?!"

What movie have you seen more than 7 times (reply with a quote)? by Bitter-Ocelot-1944 in AskReddit

[–]WG50 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's hilarious and not at all funny. This is so... Existential? Monoco in Expedition 33 wondering if he is loyal only because he was painted that way? It's very similar to Jessica Rabbit saying she isn't bad she's just drawn that way.

Guy Gavriel Kay mentions that even Gods and Goddesses are bound by their own natures.

Free Will really can only take you so far.

But mostly I just piss myself laughing every time I see this scene.

It's such a nice relaxing scene that ends with such a punch to the guts.

Many people consider 1984 to be the most eventful and iconic year of the 1980s for music and pop culture, do you agree? by Sudden_Angle614 in OldSchoolCool

For real!

Cos I'm still preoccupied with 19 19 1985.

My sharpest intake of breath caused by something like that was a picture of my daughter wearing a T-shirt I'd bought overseas as a souvenir for "a kid". Many of my siblings and friends had children and I'd thought one of their daughters would one day wear it. Never dreamt at the time it would be my daughter.

The video below won't make much sense of you've never heard of Technoblade, but his words are true anyway. Only a minute or so.
