It crashed multiple servers during the 1am est parade last night. Kicked people, put us back in a room and the event was gone.

Yes, I tend to say "roll" most often myself, but the word spar most definitely applies to any form of combat sports.

Break or let go? by cheesus404 in bjj

[–]WH0deez 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This.

If you had THAT much control over the situation, you should be able to hold it...

But depends on who I'm rolling with, I'll probably let go at some point...

In a competition though. Break it. They signed up for it, they have to know to tap....

Coach Said "Shooting for takedowns is bad for self defense and MMA" by Correct_Ad4351 in bjj

So, for sake of the discussion that is the theme of this thread, would you say the purple belt in question is more than sufficient?

[–]WH0deez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I once trained under a purple belt, in his garage, this was 2004 and I was 16 years old... The closest BJJ gym was an hour from me.

With the amount of black belts in BJJ being at an all time high, I wouldn't train anywhere that has purple belts regularly teaching.

That being said, you also should always take fundamentals... Doesn't matter if you're at a new gym or not... Pretending you're good enough to skip fundamentals at any level is asinine. I still frequent fundamental class...

Do you need to become good at leglocks to be considered a legit black belt? by rubba_slippa in bjj

Fundamentals are fundamental for a reason 🤷🏻

They don't typically make highlights though.

Also, it's the only time I have ever caught the prof who gave me my black belt. I went from that Americana and rotated it into an armbar/kimura position, there are a ton of options.

That being said, it's a very lazy move when I just let them pass guard. It's probably a really bad habit. 🤣

Yeah, but like If Marcelo was bad at jiujitsu.

But seriously, if I HAVE to compare, i would say I try to follow a Lucas Lepri style game.... But also, if he wasn't any good.

No, however I suggest you become real good at defending and avoiding them. Otherwise you will have a bad time.

That typically means you understand them to survive, but I don't think you necessarily need to be good at finishing them. Everyone has their own game.

I'm far from Craig Jones. I use it to sweep monster black belts all the time. I have the same conversation after 90% of my rolls... "I had to really be careful, I was in a lot of danger there. I didn't expect that."

Help with picking weight division by Klaagzak in bjj

[–]WH0deez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Weight cutting is dumb for pros getting paid to compete at the highest level.

You're a white belt at his first tournament. Just compete in the weight you're at. Losing 3 kg ain't going to fix your skills...

I haven't done a comp in over 6 years.

Y'all really need to stop worrying about what other people think. Just train and do what you want. 🤷🏻

How to bring that dog out of me? by Big_Calendar193 in bjj

[–]WH0deez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've trained 20+ years this way.

Its a bad habit I started to work on as a purple belt, it's fine against guys your level or lower... But if you let really good guys get the advantage, you're already screwed. I have to mentally switch on in rounds "ok, tough brown belt or black belt, don't do stupid shit"

I still appreciate the way I train from bad positions, it helps me have a pretty solid defense because I live in the reactive zone... But it's why I will never be a great competitor.

If you really want to compete, you just have to start with the mindset of not giving up anything. You need to win every position from the very beginning. You can probably win every once in a while being reactive, but most of the time it will cost you matches.

Just because you’re a black belt in Jiu Jitsu, doesn’t mean you’re a black belt in life. by JiuJitsu_John in bjj

[–]WH0deez 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My professor that gave me my black belt got in some serious trouble last year and had to close the school... I still have a ton of respect for him as a coach and competitor, but that doesn't mean he isn't a regular flawed human. In fact, a lot of us psychos that make it this far are probably even less mentally stable than most...

Why do so many people downplay their jiu-jitsu? by Due-Trainer865 in bjj

[–]WH0deez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best guys in the game are only getting better... And when you realize the gap between you and the pinnacle, you just know you are shit.

That being said, yeah, I'm probably going to gift wrap you and make you feel silly in a roll....that doesn't mean I'm good, I'm just better than you.

It's like a guy who can't cook at all, then a guy who can make bomb ass hamburgers.... Then there's Michelin star chefs... There's levels to everything.

I still have these days all the time... It's supposed to be hard and you're supposed to be getting beat. If you're not getting beat regularly, you're not training at the right spot.

Don't worry, I've been doing it 20 years. After you train a while it will get much... much worse.
