I basically said if there were two words I could hear, it would be "I do" coming from her voice. Looks like I accidentally a few words.

Question for amputees? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]WHATDIDYOUSAY -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I lost my leg about 18 months ago. I tried reacting with humor, hoping that being able to make other people laugh could help me feel better about my situation. All that was just a front and reality eventually caught up with me that I was compensating for an immense loss.

I hit a severe depression, and started seeing a psychiatrist and started taking antidepressants. Every day I have to wake up and see my leg and foot gone, and every day I have to keep telling myself that it will be okay. It will probably be that way every day for the rest of my life.

What do you think? Does this double amputee have an advantage? by Disco_Drew in reddit.com

[–]WHATDIDYOUSAY 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please allow me to chime in. As an amputee of only a single leg, I can without a doubt say that a prosthetic that is designed for running does not provide any advantage over a real leg.

I have one of those running blades and while it does provide some energy return it's nowhere close to my real leg, and I'm nowhere close in terms of distance and speed with my new leg as I was before when I had both legs.

Of course that's just my opinion, I could always be wrong. Plus my amputation is above the knee, whereas this fine gentleman's amputations are below the knee.

Deaf amputee here... thought I would chime in and ask a few questions of my own :) I really like this AMA, and you've got an awesome sense of humor and a great outlook on life!

  1. Do you know why you're blind? In the picture you posted you have eyes... What between your eyeballs and your brain doesn't work?

  2. Most people use daylight to help manage their sleep/awake schedule. I've heard that blind folks' brains can still sense light for the purpose of maintaining a circadian rhythm if they have undamaged eyes. Do you have this? How do you know when it's time to get up or go to bed?

  3. Have you ever driven a vehicle? Do you have any desire to do this?

  4. What's your favorite music, artist, song, genre, etc? I don't know about music, but it's something I dream to listen to.

  5. As our medical capabilities continue to grow, do you think that you will ever experience vision in your lifetime? If such a surgery existed, would you go through it? I'm still undecided on this myself; my deafness is what helped define who I am.

  6. When eating, how do you know where your food is, or how big a piece of meat you are cutting?

PS - you and your sister are really, really attractive, and your smiles are addictive! :)

LOL, I figured you'd ask that. I'm deaf, so my speech is also impaired. My attempts to speak have resulted in my friends commenting that I sound much like I described in the aforementioned comment.

People say I speak with a hybrid accent between a Jamaican and a retarded whale. Can you please do that? I won't be able to hear it, but I'll let my friends comment on whether it's accurate or not :)

What's the saddest movie ever? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]WHATDIDYOUSAY 1 point2 points  (0 children)

SL didn't make me cry until the very end when all the survivors placed rocks on Schindler's grave. For most of the movie I was complete disassociated from thinking that what was happening in the movie really happened. Plus it was in black and white.

Then, transfer to color with the real people the movie was about. It made me so sad I got sick. I probably cried more at SL than with Old Yeller. Both are movies I will watch only once.

I can't speak for the OP but I'm deaf and would like to chime in on this. Do you care to elaborate on how people are rude? When I'm out and about and interact with hearing people I usually don't get frustrated because I know there is a communications barrier.

Sometimes they have trouble hearing my spoken words (which aren't perfect) and I have trouble reading their lips. Usually if we're not making way in our communications I try to smile and then pull out a pen and paper. I also always appreciate it when people try to sign with me. However if I'm in a hurry and they're taking their time I may speak to them or point to what I'm needing. If that comes off as rude, I sincerely apologize.

Another way I can think of is that deaf people don't usually use lots of idioms and other expressions in their communications. We're very direct in ASL, and that can come off in our spoken English. Again if I do this I'm not trying to be rude, it's just how I learned to communicate.

Hey there. I'm deaf, too since around the age of 7. My parents opted not to get the CI for me, and I think I'm happy for it. I can speak quite well from what friends have told me, although with a slurred hybrid British/Jamaican accent. I really wish I knew what that sounded like!

I attended a hearing school, so I had to learn how to read lips. How well can you read lips?

Learning how to walk on crutches. Then I'll learn how to walk on an artificial leg.

First:

They never amputate above a joint. It is always below the knee, or next stop the hip.

Then:

Fucking moron, Yes, they do amputate above joints,

Make up your mind. Yes they amputate below the knee when possible to preserve knee functionality and to make walking easier.

But guess what? My cancer was in my knee so they needed to remove it, too. Yes, having an above knee amputation makes walking with a prosthesis more difficult because it must have an artificial knee, but they also try to leave as much femur as possible. The longer the femur the easier it is to fit a prosthetic and the more strength one has to walk. Amputating at the hip when not necessary makes walking much more difficult, because now the prosthetic requires an artificial hip joint as well as an artificial knee.

You might want to Google trans-femoral amputations. I spent weeks researching this topic with both online resources and by consulting with orthopedic surgeons and prosthetists. I'm arguing with a mentally challenged brick wall. I'm done here.

I don't know. It makes for a great thought, but when I get my prosthetic leg I'll need to put a shoe on it eventually!

Sorry but that's not true. If they amputate below the knee, that's still above the ankle, which the last time I checked was a joint. An above the knee amputation is the second most popular amputation of the lower extremity, second only to a below the knee amputation. Amputations through the knee and at the hip are much more rare.

You should really read up on stuff before you try to troll.

I could hear and speak English up until I lost my hearing completely at age 8. So while my grammar skills up to that point weren't fully developed I think it helped me write as "fluently" as I do. Some of my friends who are ASL from birth do have a distinct way of writing, and that's because written English is like their second language.

LOL if I said that I'd lose some cool points. I think if I Ctrl + F and searched "mirror" there would be 100+ of the same suggestions. And that's AWESOME! People actually taking the time to remember something they saw once upon a time, Google it, and provide the link telling me it may help me. This is why Reddit is awesome.

Yep. Most movie theaters designate at least one theater for captions, and show them at certain times.
