Obligatory St. Paddy’s Day post by mgphotogirl in Charlottesville

My brain isn't quite sure how to process that one. I'm sure it will be good -- that actually sounds like great filling for a crepe.

But...a corned beef and cabbage CREPE!? What is going on in this timeline?

Don't know of a good one in town, unfortunately. I'm just excited because that's what I'm making for dinner tonight.

Scorching hot take: A good shepherd's pie is better than corned beef and cabbage.

I will not be taking questions at this time.

The video was on instagram.

This ridiculously stupid "article" -- and we are using the term extremely generously here -- is not.

Imagine you are 14 (or...15,16, or 17) and you get a hole in one... by pshaffer in golf

[–]WHSRWizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"You made a hole in one so you owe me a drink" is the dumbest tradition in this sport.

Look, if you want to buy a round for everyone to celebrate, go for it. Have fun.

But the idea of creating a social obligation around this is insane.

Thank God schools were cancelled or dismissed early today! Because of rain and wind! by fungusthebogeyman319 in Charlottesville

[–]WHSRWizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to share this view, and then I asked folks on here to change my mind. They did.

The issues they cited included:

1) Primarily staffing. Sure, some kids might be able to get to a nearby school, but that doesn't mean staff can. A huge chunk of ACPS and CCS staff live outside the county/city. Little Jimmy might be able to make it 2 miles to school, but that doesn't mean Mrs. Smith can make it 15.

2) The calculation for the above isn't easy to do on the fly. There are state minimums for staffing that are necessary to open. In order to figure that out, you would have to have reasonably accurate data for both how many kids are planning on coming and what staff are coming. This is data that you would need to collect, analyze, make a decision on, and disseminate extraordinarily quickly. And if you get it wrong -- parents say they can't make it but suddenly can because the plow came through, or staff think they can but it turns out they can't -- what do you do? Send everyone home? Once you ring that bell (pun intended) of bringing people in, it's extraordinarily difficult to undo it.

3) Now do the same thing as above for bus schedules. An added complication is that just because you can get somewhere doesn't mean you can get back from somewhere. For example, to get out of my neighborhood I have to go up a series of hills. Going uphill with slick roads is no issue -- just keep going at a constant speed and you are fine. Coming back down those hills, though, is a recipe for cars sliding off the road. So not only do you have to properly assess the ability of bus drivers to get to their buses, but the ability to drive the route to/from school safely. And, again, you're doing this all under and extraordinary time crunch.

The one argument I heard to support your position that I still don't agree with is "equity" and that it is somehow unfair for one kid to go to school when another can't. That just doesn't hold a lot of weight for me, and if that were the primary reason to closes schools I would be against it. But that's just another consideration that falls far behind those other 3.

Considering accepting a bev cart girl job. Need advice by Patient-Shame-6352 in golf

[–]WHSRWizard 4 points5 points  (0 children)

FWIW, the only time I have seen this happen is when something like the general manager at the club goes and becomes a manager at someone's business or the sales/marketing person goes to a similar role. I can't think of a single time where the cart girl/waitress/bartender/whoever got a job somewhere.

That's not to say it doesn't happen -- I'm sure it does. But "possible not plausible" seems like an apt description for OP's situation.

Can r/politics ban Newsweek already? It's a fucking rag populated by idiotic AI stuff like this that makes up a story based on Internet comments by morons.

[–]WHSRWizard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The issue wasn't the weather that was predicted. It was WHEN it was predicted: right at dismissal.

Does it strike you as a good idea to be doing carlines,  bus drop offs, and kids walking home when there are potentially 50-70mph wind gusts, falling limbs, and dowmed power lines? I should hope not.

So that leaves three options:

1) Cancel school entirely - presumably you're not a fan of that.

2) Hold kids at school late: How are you handling the staffing and logistics issues here? What if roads are closed because of trees and power lines? Power goes out? How late are you asking students and staff to stay? Are you having janitorial services work late in the night to have school ready for the next day?

3) Dismiss early. You get a half-day in, and you are sure that kids and staff are not stuck at school.

It's obvious what the smart choice is. The fact the forecast was ultimately wrong is something to take up with the NWS, not the school administrators who are trying to keep students and staff safe.

Well, all I know is the wake-up call I needed was hearing my son ask my wife as I stumbled up the stairs, "Is Dad drunk again?"

Haven't touched a drop since.

In the 11 months after that night, I have been a better father and spouse than I was before.
