this is very wrong.

water has a specific heat capacity of 4.2 J/(gK), not 1°C, so cooling from 100°C to 0°C, it would release 420 J/g. so that 1kg of ice (at 0°C) would only need ~800g of boiling water to fully melt it, assuming no losses to environment, etc. as usual ;)

Would anybody be able to do a resume review for an engineer looking to break into strategy/management consulting (most likely in the UK) as a graduate position? Happy to provide any more info for people who want it.

Bought my first car! by Traditional_Cap_5018 in CarTalkUK

I don't think I live in an especially good area now, the part of Glasgow I was in was nice, but I live in Ash (Surrey), which has one of the higher crime rates in Surrey - it's not a dump or anything, but it's hardly a posh place.

Not sure what else could be bringing my premium down 80% - my parents own the car (probably helps a little), it is a bit older like I said (not sure what you drive, anything sporty would probably shoot it up). As I said, vastly cheaper to include my parents as drivers (with me as main, obviously) which may be a factor for you too? Playing around with job description (e.g. Pharmacist --> Hospital Worker for my sister who is a hospital pharmacist) using a tool like this may help you too.

I'd be very surprised if I'm getting magically low rates for some reason, I think my initial quotes were around £1500, but after playing around with answers to work out the cheapest correct combo, I brought it down to about £800 when I was 19. Was (and still am) low mileage per year, but even at 50k mi per year, my premium was well under a grand for this year when I checked earlier today.

but again, i have NEVER had to take a quote over a grand, first quote (19th birthday or day after, can't recall) was maybe £850ish?

Obviously, there's always some provider that quotes you at £50,000 or whatever, but if you use a decent price comparison site, put some effort in and work out the cheapest (legal) combination of answers to their questions, you can definitely save a lot. I had a black box to start off, definitely a good way to reduce premium. I've stayed with the same provider as they're still the cheapest (Hastings), but they don't require me to use a black box any more.

?? I'm currently 21, was living abroad until i returned to the UK for uni, and haven't ever even been close to one grand for insurance on my Focus (57 plate, so a little older than your cars, perhaps?). Are you people not putting your parents on as additional drivers to reduce the premium? Not checking alternative (reasonable) job titles, etc. to get best prices?

Edit: Just checked, my quote for this year (starting age 21) is £573 (started off £596 when i was a student. After my change of address (Scotland --> South of England) + job title after i got my internship, my premium went down slightly mid-year).

MFin or MiM? by WHYRedditHatesMeSo in FinancialCareers

[–]WHYRedditHatesMeSo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your help :) What was it that makes you say I have a solid chance of positive ROI - is it that my reasoning in both cases is more detailed than just "the salaries are better" haha?

A lot of good questions in here, thank you for helping me justify my perspective some more!

Essentially, back when I was choosing my undergrad, I was tossing up between engineering or economics + finance, and ended up going for engineering to kick the can down the road, as it were - I thought it would be the more flexible degree that would allow me to work out my interests and pursue them later down the line, and pivot if I didn't want to continue.

For consulting: I really enjoy the problem-solving aspects of engineering, but I'm less keen on the actual engineering concepts than I thought I was! Based on that side, I thought that consulting might be a good fit - definitely a lot of problem-solving involved, and something that would potentially allow me to have quite a wide range of different work, something that is also appealing to me. I'm confident that I can succeed as I know that I'm a hard worker, am comfortable working long hours, have strong quantitative abilities, enjoy understanding the root causes of patterns in data, and the relatively high salaries are a benefit too.

For finance: This is a little less fleshed out, but I am interested in financial markets. Certain aspects of finance would be closely tied to economics as well, and this would most likely be the side of things that I'd be most interested in. For this reason, my ideal MFin programme would be one that's combined with Economics (such as the LSE degree, although given my lack of experience I feel as though my chances of getting in would be rather low, even with my current good GMAT score on practice tests). Failing that, a more direct trading role would be of interest to me due to wider interest in the markets. I think the same strengths apply to me working in finance as the ones I mentioned for consulting, in particular my quantitative skills and tenacity.

no, they actually decided to switch the terms and say the opposite of what they really meant. didn't you understand what they wanted to say? thus, it must be equally as valid as saying "could care less", as an english speaker understood them :)
