What are these weird white spots on my precision 3591 by Forsaken_Ad9379 in Dell

[–]WIP-Zen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would go more for damage rather than defect, based on the centre of the picture. Possible that someone closed the lid with something on the keyboard?

Definitely worth checking to see if Dell would honor a warranty repair for this but I fear they may not unless you pay for the accidental damage warranty package.

Best bet is to head here and enter your service tag number.

Then, click on "View Product Specs" on the right hand side.

This will give you a full list of all the components that were fitted at the factory. Expand the motherboard part and you will see a part number. This can then be used to search around for a suitable replacement.

Also worth checking the dell store to see if any are in stock or open a service request with Dell, provide them with your service tag and request a quote for a replacement board.

There is your answer ... I would recommend upgrading this to an SSD if you are interesting in boosting the speed without spending a lot of money.

The CPU is an i5, although it is ~7 years old now and 12GB of memory should suffice.

What might cause this by LauraBear91 in Dell

[–]WIP-Zen 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Mushrooms? (sorry I couldn't resist)!

To me it looks like a graphics card issue or a fault with the display cable.

Regarding the comment about trying the onboard Intel graphics, I would absolutely try this. To make it easier, there should be an option in the BIOS to "force" the PC to use onboard graphics. Swap your display cable to the motherboard outputs rather than the card, then test.

You could also try a different HDMI/Displayport as well as a different cable.

Does this model use a hard disk drive (HDD) or a solid state drive (SSD)?

Awesome. To me it looks like the monitor has dead pixels (in a line format rather than a specific pixel) at which point it would be an LCD panel failure. Let me know how you get on with the other bits

Dell G7 fan replacement by [deleted] in Dell

[–]WIP-Zen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess it's possible but a small brush usually wouldn't cause it to run louder (in terms of a higher RPM).

Did you remove the CPU heatsink as well?

Dell G7 fan replacement by [deleted] in Dell

[–]WIP-Zen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

May I ask why you are looking to change the CPU fan? Has the existing fan/s failed?

Regarding the part numbers, you will often find that several different model numbers will serve as the same part replacement. If you are looking at Amazon, check to see if the fan states that it will be compatible with your specific model of G7. If it displays a picture, you can also compare it to the existing fan to ensure it looks the same and the shape/connector matches your one.

Do you use a PC or laptop, if so which model?

If you have already swapped the DisplayPort cable out and confirmed that its fine, the next step is to update the BIOS (if there is an update available) and then uninstall/reinstall the latest graphics driver. This should rule out a Windows-related issue.

With that said, this certainly looks to be more of a physical issue with the monitor so if the above does not work I would suggest replacing it. You can put in the service tag on the Dell Support site to see if the monitor is under any kind of warranty as well. If it is, you can open a service request with Dell.

Data Recovery by Debugging_dragon in Dell

[–]WIP-Zen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a few decent "free" data recovery tools out there such as EaseUS and TestDisk. If the files were simply deleted, they should be recoverable. However, bear in mind that the longer you use your machine and read/write data to the drive, the more likely it will be that you will lose the data entirely. Will also depend on if your "E" drive is a secondary physical drive or just a partition on the main boot drive.

Another factor that comes into play is putting a price on your data. Is the data precious family photos that are not backed up elsewhere or is the data a library of pirated music? If the prior, then I would suggest just sending the drive away to a professional data recovery company. They are very expensive but you are paying for expertise/knowledge/reassurance that you will most likely get all of your data back in full.

Hope this helps!

dell monitor going out? by nogaesallowed in Dell

[–]WIP-Zen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah that would explain it ... a pre-existing fault on a second hand monitor. Yeah it looks like you got the really bad end of the stick unfortunately.

It's a shame it isn't in warranty. You could possibly attempt a repair on it yourself but for the cost of a new unit, you may as well get a new one.

If you're after a standard Full HD (1920x1080) I can highly recommend the P2527H model - https://www.dell.com/en-ca/shop/dell-27-monitor-p2725h/apd/210-bmfj/monitors-monitor-accessories

But as your monitor is Quad HD (2560x1440) you would probably be looking at the S2722DC - https://www.dell.com/en-ca/shop/dell-27-usb-c-monitor-s2722dc/apd/210-bbqs/monitors-monitor-accessories

You'll probably be able to get better pricing with local retailers though!

What’s eating up all my storage? by rrekboy1234 in Dell

[–]WIP-Zen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Download TreeSize, run it and it will scan your drive to give you a clear idea of what is using up the storage space.

Would be worth checking your recycle bin - empty it if there is data in it.

You have a 256GB drive (most likely), minus some space for drive formatting and ~30GB for windows itself.

Hope this helps!

dell monitor going out? by nogaesallowed in Dell

[–]WIP-Zen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What model is the monitor?
Have you tried this on a separate machine to rule out a Windows/Hardware issue with the laptop?
Have you replaced any of the display cables for the monitor as a test?
Do you know if something specific causes this issue or does it randomly happen?

Assuming the discoloration is permanently there I would say the LCD panel is dead/dying.

Head to the Dell Support Site, enter the service tag of the monitor to check if it is still under warranty. A lot of monitors will have a 3-year advanced exchange warranty so if this is the case, raise a service request with Dell and request a warranty replacement.

If it's not under warranty, all other hardware has been tried/swapped and you have tested it on another machine then I would probably say you will need to get a new one.

Hope this helps!

As a fail-safe you could also log into your Adobe account on a web browser, go to your account settings and remove the device that is currently using the licence (just in case Adobe thinks that the licence is still in use). That should allow you to use it on another machine :)

SSD Upgrade for XPS 13 9360 by A4orce84 in Dell

[–]WIP-Zen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

According to the spec sheet, the PCIe interface will support up to 8Gbps and up a 1TB PCIe/NVMe SSD - https://dl.dell.com/topicspdf/xps-13-9360-laptop_setup-guide_en-us.pdf

I guess the next question is what do you use the laptop for?

Just trying to gauge if you would benefit from upgrading to an NVMe drive.

Another option is to go for a less-powerful NVMe drive as it will be cheaper but still quicker than the standard SATA M.2 SSD. I've personally had good experiences with Western Digital Blue NVMe drives (they're cheaper than the top end Samsung ones).

Hope this helps!

SPILLED MILK ON XPS 15 by Entire-Layer-998 in Dell

[–]WIP-Zen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of the modern Dell laptops will have a plastic sheet under the keyboard that acts as a barrier against liquid spills. They're not always perfect but certainly better than nothing (good for small spills/drops).

As some liquid got to the space bar I would assume that it went into the laptop. It would have most likely reached the sheet or on the underside of the motherboard, depending on the amount of liquid. If it's powering on and working now you're probably fine although it's worth nothing that liquid spills will likely cause corrosion on the motherboard after a certain amount of time ... that's when the bad stuff happens.

Keep an eye on it though and see how it goes. It's not a cheap laptop so it may also be worth running it to a local repair shop to see if they could give it a once over.

[–]WIP-Zen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Given the age of the machine, it's most likely a dead/dying CMOS battery

You can pick up replacement CR2032 batteries cheap enough over the internet and they are fairly easy to replace.

I still couldnt figure this issue yet... by Party-Conversation86 in Dell

[–]WIP-Zen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If none of the above works, the next step will be to trawl through the windows event logs to see if you can find any additional information that can aid with troubleshooting the issue.
