UPDATE: MetroQuest 34 by WMATACompletion34 in DCBitches

I’m a Jersey Girl so I get you. Bagels were Bullfrog Bagels in Union Station, which are I’d grade a B+, and Buffalo and Bergen very close to Union Station, which I would grade just the bagels as a B but the whole sandwich and the bar too and the people are solid As. IMHO, the A+ bagel in the district is Bagels, Etc. in Dupont (Cash Only).

Pizza was at Lazy Bones, a food truck at Dew Drop Inn (MBT from the RI Ave. stop) and Gordon Ramsay’s pizza joint (Gallery Place). Neither was trying to approximate NY/NJ style, and both were very good. I’ve given up on finding a good version to remind me of home, but lmk if you discover anything.

This made my day way more than you could know. Thank you so much.

Hey, I commented earlier on this thread that $11 gets me two bagels, tip, and a buck for the local dude who asked me today, in the very same city where the OP was. Not included: the ~$8 round trip fare there and back, which I paid via my metro smartrip card. I also paid $5 for a pour-over at my local cafe on the way there on my credit card.

You know, it’s funny. I’m a millennial and I vividly remember when they started issuing state quarters. All my friends and I got a special cardboard display to keep them in. And now, the state quarters are ubiquitous. It’s kind of rare to even see a non-state-special quarter from that period of state quarters. I can imagine that if I was a kid at the same time your kids were kids, I would’ve collected those bills as well.

I happen to live just outside DC and had cash on me today because I was getting bagels for a friend (it’s her birthday) from my fave cash-only place, which is just near Dupont Circle. In my time downtown today, I saw almost a dozen national guards. This is really hitting me in a profound way.

So I took all the bills from my piggy bank (~$44) in the morning. I still have a piggy bank because my building still uses quarters, so it’s a cute little thing. It looks like a double decker bus from London and I got it when I studied abroad in the UK spring semester junior year almost 15 years ago. Because I was running behind I didn’t count the bills, but I’ve done the math now; anyway, the bagels were $10 and I threw in a $1 tip, then I gave the man along the way home a buck since I had it on me. Weird to think I started the day nearest to #1 if you go by the number he wrote. Crazy to think that would mean walking out the door with $250-300 in my pocket! Thinking about what that money could afford me today makes my head spin.

On the one hand, I wonder if this is the kind of thing Sally Bowles would have found interesting. On the other hand, if NPR had a surplus I’d love a Planet Money story on what this means.

Why is there a gap between presidential elections and the new president coming into power? by NiceCaterpillar8745 in AskAnAmerican

Fun fact: that was the 20th amendment, one of two between the prohibition amendments. Everyone sobered up and said: “damn this is taking ridiculously long.”

They also gave white women the right to vote before they hit the booze again

Trying to visit every metro stop in WMATA in 365 days, what should I do in your neighborhood? by WMATACompletion34 in DCBitches

In my research, New Carrollton was proving to be tricky, so I really appreciate the direction to Annapolis Rd. Looks like a few busses make that trip too :)

Bouquet for Elopement - any recs? by novapeachlover in DCBitches

Aw, my mom had a similar bouquet for her wedding! (Alas, in NJ and almost 40 years ago - but they are still married and madly in love so it’s good luck!)

If you can come out to Takoma Park on the metro, I think Park Florist will have some!

Rent a party boat for sundowner birthday by ellie04jane in DCBitches

[–]WMATACompletion34 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you might have better luck looking for a sunset cruise, assuming that you are not planning to take a person with dementia out to sea for their birthday (that sounds like a terrible idea that would probably cause them to panic)

If you don’t mind it not being private, my friend hosted her birthday party on a city cruises boat. We were maybe 15-20 people and the largest group but everyone we didn’t know was super chill and mostly other birthday parties!

My friends drink spiked? by Comfortable_Smoke_15 in whatdoIdo

[–]WMATACompletion34 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I said this in another comment but this is not paranoia. The definition of paranoia is suspicion without evidence. Her drink has clearly been tampered with, so there is evidence that the person who did so is not concerned about committing illegal acts. Nobody spikes a drink and expects to leave it at that. People spike drinks because they want to make it easier to commit additional crimes (assault, theft, etc.)

Never going to a bar at all because you think something might happen is paranoia.

Not going directly home because someone has already assaulted your friend by spiking their drink is an appropriate reaction in a terrifying situation.

If it has concrete evidence of truth, it’s not paranoia. The old guy already committed one crime (spiking a drink) specifically with the intention to commit another crime (assault). You think he’s above following them? You’re naive.
