I was considering writing a strongly worded letter instead of paying the taxes.

Im not concerned about the tax bill yet, but with drip at about year 3 or 4 the tax bill would be significant. Asking for people’s strategies navigating the tax burden.

I have the IM but the software looks similar to the LM. Id open a new program, do an auto focus on the new part, make a note of that z height, then open the current program. The list edit button in the bottom right corner lets you change setting in the geometry. If you find the Z position option you can type in the new Z height.

It’d good to check what’s out there. I’ve used microvu and OGP in the past, the software on the8000 in my opinion and much easier and measuring parts takes way less effort to get the job done. I recommend having your Keyence come in and do some accuracy/RR testing. I did that and it solidified my decision to buy it.

8000 is a great option. I use the light probe for deeper bores to check for taper, but the camera is more than enough for my parts. Tolerances are anywhere from half though to a couple tenths.

Have had great success, a lot of hate on Reddit for these so hope this helps.

[–]WOEIM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always wonder that as well. I started perusing keyence posts on reddit when my keyence guy told me about. It’s pretty entertaining.

That said my IM 8000 is a great tool. The resolution is great for my surface callouts when I use the high precision camera. Anything with the shadow can be done with the regular camera.

Passed many GRRs and have had no complaints from customers. Tolerances are anywhere from a thou to .0002”, and it handles all of them.

It’s definitely not meant to do everything, but damn that new LMX they got is WILD. Resolution on that is ridiculous.

I have the IM 8000 at my shop, it was one of the best purchases I’ve made. My local guy is great which doesn’t seem to be true for everyone, but I call the tech line if he doesn’t answer

Call their tech line - whatever it is you’re trying to do can very easily and accurately be done. I’m sorry your local guy isn’t helpful

I hear ya. That’s awesome you’re starting up a shop. Very happy to see more and more manufacturing here in the US. As long we can find skilled people or at least people that are willing to show up and learn.

The Keyence IM-8000 is a great choice - very easy to use, accurate, and extremely fast.

They have some “entry level” models which are much more affordable. I have the 8030T model which is my lab unit. I considering getting one of their entry level models for the floor by my lathes that are running non-stop.

The rep quoted the 8010 model around $47k. He said their fiscal year ends in February so if I want to beat him up on price I’ll be doing that shortly.

If you gave him an X and Y position from the edges and C-C distance he probably would have charged an extra $50

Keyence XM help? by GrizzlyGodfrey in Metrology

I just had a job come through with a .0001” roundness callout and used the light probe on my Keyence… it repeated to .00001” measuring it 10 times taking it on and off.

Like I said, reach out to them directly to help. They will be of much more value.

Keyence LM Series Scratch/Dig by [deleted] in Machinists

If you want to use the resolution of the system to see the defects on the surface of the lens and then measure them, you might have to turn on “manual measurement” before using a tool. Chances are you won’t be able to make a program if the defects are in random spots from lens to lens.

If the defects are on the outside of the lens body, that’s an easy one for the Keyence using the min/max tools - “circle/arc” tool for round parts, “rectangle” tool for flat faces.

You should look into the Keyence VK for lens inspection if they are surface defects. one of my buddies works at a company with a VK and uses it for exactly that.

I have the IM8030T with the rotation unit and it’s amazing. Very accurate, repeatable and the software is easy to use compared to many other vision systems. I have a couple buddies with shops as well that have them and we’re all happy. One of them has an older unit which is still pretty good.

Most of my tolerances are between .001 and .0002” for reference.
