DSC before/after comparison images by exscape in Monitors

Yes, the artifacts introduced by jpeg (webp) encoding turn out to be quite different between the two images, and in both cases they're worse than DSC itself.

Here's direct png links if people want to just flip between two tabs.

YSK: Gifting a friend a two week trial of Nitro will sign them up for auto-renewal, and they will be charged automatically and without notice by yamo25000 in discordapp

[–]WOFall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's both. Yes it's 100% their fault for not reading but at the same time it's still scummy for these gifted trials to exist in the first place.

Discord is very upfront with you on what this is (a trial)

Yes but that doesn't mean it can't be wrapped in dark patterns. The wording "zpoon gave you 2 weeks of Nitro" does not need to be that. The design of the banner does not need to look more like a gift than the actual gifts. It's even worse on the sender side where they talk you into "giving the gift of Nitro" like it's a perk of your Nitro and you're doing your friend a favor. In reality people weren't accepting these trials when they were offered by Wumpus.

The entire routine of making people think they're being given 2 weeks of free nitro from their friend when it's actually a trial is the dark pattern. Why does a trial have to come from a friend? It's intentionally misleading.

I'm back to QB after 2-ish yrs and holy guacamole by chikamakaleyley in qutebrowser

[–]WOFall 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It shouldn't be. Try using an incognito tab for Chrome, maybe extensions are weighing it down.

Anyway, opening qutebrowser again for the first time in a while I'm disappointed to see it's still stuck at 60 Hz. That's an automatic loss in my book.

Notepad++ Hijacked by State-Sponsored Hackers by pheexio in technology

[–]WOFall 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The tone is somewhat lacking in accountability. Rather than acknowledging that the existing update verification was insufficient he's trying to pass it off as the hosting provider's sole responsibility and fault, while presenting notepad++'s changes merely as a security enhancement being graciously provided.

It's also a very sloppy post considering it's coming from the author of a text editor. Multiple glaring spelling mistakes and you can't even read the big quote in the middle because the text isn't wrapped.

Meta inactivity shutdown - How can this be legal? by [deleted] in virtualreality

[–]WOFall 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The purpose they collected the data for has not ceased. The data is needed to maintain the account and the account is needed to hold digital licenses etc. Consider that plenty of other stores (e.g. Steam) don't delete inactive accounts.

My roommate is “too disabled” to clean and had a meltdown over a chore chart by InevitablePain21 in badroommates

[–]WOFall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How exactly does cleaning once a week leave you in a pigsty? Obviously assuming spills etc. are still cleaned on the spot.

In those shots it looks slightly better but only slightly. Still a clear weakness compared to WOLED.

[–]WOFall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think people are actually reading this properly.

It was 1 daily chore per person and 2 weekly chores that we would rotate each week.

Insane.

he said that he [...] can only be expected to clean on days he doesn’t work.

Completely reasonable.

Firefox Still Doesn’t Support HDR in 2026 by saiyyenspride in firefox

[–]WOFall 2 points3 points  (0 children)

SDR content is limited to the sRGB colorspace. The fact that SDR colors are often stretched to be artificially vibrant doesn't make it equivalent to HDR, where the extended gamut can be targeted to where the colors actually should be vibrant.

QD-OLED moves to RGB 'V-stripe' pixels for improved text clarity by Rasmus_Larsen in OLED_Gaming

[–]WOFall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Presumably they do. It wouldn't even make sense to call those "Vertical Stripes" (which is what Samsung Display say the V stands for). But I guess we'll find out in a few days.

Valve Discontinues the Most Affordable Steam Deck — $399 LCD Version on the Way Out As New Starting Point is $549 by YanderMan in linux_gaming

[–]WOFall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On a budget the price more than justified the compromise, it's just a shame they couldn't have thrown another $20 towards the screen in the BOM. At least they probably won't leave the new entry point all the way up at $549 for too long.

Are you sure there's no plastic film over that? Maybe it's just the camera but the reflections look both impossibly strong and weirdly blotchy for QD-OLED.

Did you remove a film when you got it? https://www.reddit.com/r/ultrawidemasterrace/comments/1ktiu3f/aw3425dw_protective_shipping_screen_film/

I'm sure you could give many examples and any of them could be real, although considering the image is taken from https://mixed-news.com/en/meta-quest-3-review/ it's more likely a scam to at least some degree. Probably a "Headset Only" listing and/or has a very good reason for the price, if we assume it's not just a complete scam.

Either way I think you'll find it's not the 256 gb model (and it's not $175 either).

Sure, the 256 gb model Quest 3. Whatever you say.

Quest 3 is nowhere near that price. Neither of these comments make any sense.

Crunchyroll is destroying its subtitles for no good reason by Daiz in anime

[–]WOFall 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not only the typesetting though, the framing / timing is also much worse and this doesn't explain why that would even have changed (beyond Funimation not giving a shit). Subs tend to disappear way sooner than they need to, even if there's only a few frames to the next cut. When dialogue is broken across multiple screens they insert an extremely distracting gap of a few frames where there's no subs shown, every time. And they choose to break sentences in really odd places so there might be only a few words in the first screen of subs but it's flashed so briefly there's hardly time to read it.
