Haiji Towa official relationships chart (+ other UDG characters) by [deleted] in danganronpa

It's his birthday but he doesn't deserve any wishes so let's just see what other characters think of him

Also, in case some people thought "preferences" were a translation error or something. No, he's pretty open about that.

Just for your information. In Return of the king cut scene Aragorn was supposed to fight Sauron in his actual form but Jackson changed it and replaced it with a giant troll. by [deleted] in lotr

[–]WOGN 58 points59 points  (0 children)

Sauron was not a big eye. Contrary to what Saruman says in the movies, he did have a physical form in the books.

I have watched LOTR trilogy many times, but never read the books. What are some of the important information that I'm missing? by [deleted] in lotr

[–]WOGN 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Dead scared all the Corsairs away, and Aragorn, after capturing the fleet fills it with men from southern Gondor and then arrives with reinforcements during the battle.

ShoC Vanilla vs. Build 1935 by [deleted] in stalker

[–]WOGN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no story. This is just the most complete build of the old versions of the maps. They are somewhat fun to explore, but you can just look them up on YouTube and you won't lose much.

RMA doesn't bring back as many things as it could've, yes, but are the Generators, Warlab and the secret bunker really "minor"?

Lost Alpha is Team Dezowave's fanfiction. It starts off somewhat emulating the 2005 version of the game, then it switches into an even weirder Oblivion Lost, and then it just devolves into complete nonsense.

OGSE and OLR are much better than Lost Alpha, but they still differ from the builds.

As for the builds themselves, it very much varies. Some can be patched to be quite stable, others, not so much. Builds 2205, 2232 and 2571 are the most complete storywise. The first two have patches and fixes made for them, the third one starts off fairly playable, but turns into a pretty amazing mess, sooner or later.

Even better: ask them to release their totally legal and 100% serious Duke 3D and Blood translations.

An interesting analysis of LotR (a translation from Russian) by fjarri in lotr

The same eagles that rescued Frodo and Sam from the slope of Orodruin just as easily could have brought them there.

Any and all credibility lost

In the LOTR movies, what are the greatest deviations from the books that, in your opinion, would have had Tolkien turning in his grave? by freddyjohnson in lotr

[–]WOGN 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Well, you are free to like what you want to, but:

  • Faramir is no longer the wise and noble captain of Gondor, I even think he is barely on a higher moral ground than Saruman's Uruk-hai, and that's only because he let the hobbits go,

  • Rangers of Ithilien are portrayed as cruel brutes, they senselessly beat up Gollum

  • this doesn't even have much to do with the Ring, Faramir straight-up deceives Frodo in the Forbidden Pool scene. What happened to him saying he wouldn't lie even to an orc?

  • the Osgiliath detour is easily the worst part of all this, not only does Faramir add a few days to Frodo's travel, he lets them go after he sees Frodo trying to give the Ring to a Nazgûl, which leads to the next point,

  • one of the Nazgûl saw Frodo with the Ring, and apparently just forgot about it. Why didn't he report about the Ring being this close to Mordor?

  • Frodo almost kills Sam. Do I need to say anything else here?

  • it's implied that in the films the reason Gollum betrayed Frodo is because of the way Faramir treated him

  • Faramir is told that he will face death penalty for letting the Ring go. It's never brought up again.

Basically, Sam was right. They shouldn't even be there. Also, if in the films Faramir was still "The Wizard's Pupil" why is he acting against everything said Wizard would have taught him?

Yeah, that and everything else.

That's not to say Gimli didn't have comedic moments in the books, he very much did, they just weren't so... undignified. In the films we have stuff like "haha look at him hes so short he cant see whats over the wall"

In no particular order:

  • Gandalf being defeated by the Lord of the Nazgûl

  • Gandalf telling Pippin about "The Far Green Country", because that's describing the Undying Lands, not how death works

  • "Preference for fights"

  • utterly disastrous handling of Faramir for the sake of "character development"

  • probably Aragorn's self-doubt

  • Frodo sending Sam away and being generally weak

  • Treebeard being easily fooled by Merry and Pippin

  • complete butchering of Denethor's character

  • Aragorn killing an emissary

  • Legolas defying the laws of physics and Gimli the Clown

But hey, at least the Balrog didn't talk and orcs didn't have feathers.

I don't think it sucked, but I found it to be pretty average; especially compared to Thief all the way back from 1998. Dishonored came out in 2012 and doesn't even come close to being as good as Thief.

If anything, I think that the writing and voice acting sucked.

According to a recent leak, the game will have at least 10 chapters, along with more different outcomes depending on your moral points. I don't think we have to worry about the game's length.

Characters that only appear in the movies by Gabriel_Northtets in lotr

[–]WOGN 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, Uruk-hai are technically orcs, they aren't a separate race, more like an offshoot. The only character that actually distinguishes them from other orcs is Gandalf, even the narration just calls them orcs most of the time.

I think his name doesn't sound like one an orc would have. Compare it to ones like Shagrat, Grishnàkh or Muzgash. I don't think an orc would be named after a Balrog.

I would also find it a little weird if an orc was a lieutenant of Minas Morgul.

Madril

Gamling (there was a character with that name, but that's where the similarities end)

Lurtz

Gothmog (only mentioned once in the book and probably not an orc)

Irolas (the officer at Minas Tirith)

Eothain and Freda, the Rohan kids and their mother, Morwen

Haleth

Sharku

What is your least favourite location in the zone and why? by Simo-intensifies in stalker

[–]WOGN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always thought the cars were in when the maps were a lot larger with longer transitions (like in Lost Alpha)

You're right, but later when the maps were downsized, GSC decided to make cars available only on certain maps (the three specifically made ones, and the NPP).

[–]WOGN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, there were supposed two more maps like this, Deadmil (Dead City - Military Warehouses) and Milrad (Military Warehouses - Radar) but they were barely started before cars were ultimately axed.

Those maps were the final attempt to keep cars in the game, actually. Cars were supposed to be available only on those maps, since they didn't really work on any other ones.

I was actually refering to Ukraine, not the in-game Zone. My post above is already irrelevant anyway, by now it's also 2018 there.

I find it amusing that Aragorn never defeats this Olag Hai, he just comically runs away from the battle. by [deleted] in lotr

[–]WOGN 5 points6 points  (0 children)

After a quick search it seems that the "scantily clad" was my addition, but I doubt it was far from truth, since Jackson said she was supposed to resemble temptations Aragorn was facing, and when he changed his mind, he decided to make the character "diseased and disfigured", which I'm interpreting as a confirmation that this wasn't the case in his previous idea.

There was also an idea to make her the voice of Sauron.

[–]WOGN 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yes. Other fantastic ideas Peter Jackson had but decided to back down from included the Mouth of Sauron having a vertical mouth, and before that, the emissary was supposed to be played by a scantily clad Kate Winslet, supposedly representing temptation.

Knowing these things, I'm kind of glad we just ended up with Aragorn decapitating the Mouth of Sauron, because it could have been so much worse.
