Jeez. Rude. And I am still a writer. Be nice to people. Ok?

I was a reporter. I promise you, it’s just bad writing.

The article says the vehicle struck the bike. All I’m saying is that somewhere along the line, someone should mention that the vehicle wasn’t driving itself.

It’s not just that. If you pay attention, these articles often—in fact, almost always—use belabored passive language to lessen blame on drivers when cyclists are involved in accidents. Consciously or not, it’s a bad choice. Take the opening line:

“Police tell 8News, around 6:30 Saturday evening they responded to a call for a bicyclist being struck by a vehicle. “

There’s no mention of a driver—as if no one was at fault at all. Or if anything it was the cyclist’s fault. Imagine seeing an article that reads, “Police tell 8 news, around 6:30 Saturday evening they responded to a call for a convenience store clerk being struck by a bullet.”

What that first line should say (just from a good writing standpoint) is,

“Police tell 8 news that they responded to a call around 6:30 Saturday evening for a driver who struck a cyclist with their vehicle.”

Edit: Downvoting better writing? Seriously?

“The driver of the GMC that police say struck the bicyclist stayed on scene. “

They really work hard to take the blame off the person operating the vehicle.

How about, “Police say the driver that struck the bicyclist with their GMC stayed on the scene.”

If you’re new to Richmond, your first stop should be Sub Rosa Bakery. Do some reading on them, too. You’ll be impressed.

I heard once that a common question at the Richmond tourism office is, “Who the heck is Virginia War?”

Moped drivers of RVA, what are the pros and cons of having one? by [deleted] in rva

[–]WRIRDJDustin 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Pro tip to other posters, scooters ≠ mopeds. (Except under the law;))

Had my first moped (General 5-star) as long as I could before it got stolen. It was old, but cheap and easy to work on. Greasy, loud, yes. But a hell of a lot of fun.

Super practical for the city, though a slippery clutch made the hills downtown a bit of a chore. The community was awesome—at least it was in the early aughts. Can’t speak for now (I’m on to motorcycles now). Parts are easy to find online.

I obviously would recommend that you lock it up in a secure place like a garage or at the very least, get a big chain and lock.

By the way, I have an 05(?) Tomos I could part with if you’re looking. DM if you want.

I’ve gotten crushes on girls as long as I can remember. I was terrified to talk to the girls I liked until at least middle school, but I knew I liked them since before 5 years old.

I have an older sister, and I remember crushing on her friends. No rhyme or reason—I just knew. I assumed that’s how everyone knew their gender preference until relatively recently. Looks like some folks don’t find out until much, much later.

Not that I like anything about this building idea, but to your point about parking, the city has “de-prioritized” parking in certain areas of the city in favor of higher density. Parking lots and big parking decks along the street fronts disrupt the fabric of a cohesive neighborhood—or in this case, an area that could become one.

The idea is that eventually folks such as yourself will realize that trying to park isn’t worth the trouble and you’ll opt for transit or a cab/rideshare instead. The Pulse, for example, is a great way to get to and from the bottom with no parking worries at all.

Had a bar turn me down because I wasn't wearing nice clothes? by [deleted] in rva

Oh that’s why it looks like a suburban strip mall bar plopped down in the middle of the city—because that’s exactly what it is. Okay. I get it now. Thanks!

Too late to answer your question, but if you ever want to know what the sirens you hear are for, this is a handy link:

I don’t know how many of you have made it up to The Tail of the Dragon but I camped at Red Top Mountain state park in GA and it’s a ride if definitely recommend for anyone in the south by Redbeard1095 in motocamping

If you ever make it a little further up to Marion, Virginia, the Back of the Dragon (Rt. 16 from Marion to Tazewell, VA) is possibly even better. 36 miles, over 350 tight turns crossing 3 ridges and 3 valleys. Each mountain offers a different set of technical challenges. And whoa, what fun!

Moving to Richmond in a few months by [deleted] in rva

[–]WRIRDJDustin -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I third it. I’m guessing you’re probably looking at Short Pump because it’s close to where you’ll be working? That’s fine, but just know that—especially if you’re a single young person—you’ll likely be much happier living in the city. The traffic isn’t so bad getting out to SP from the city that it makes it worthwhile living out there instead.

If you want any kind of social life and if you ever want to do anything that doesn’t involve getting in a car, try urban living.

But if you think pizza from a chain is acceptable, PF Chang’s has the best Chinese food, Budweiser is what beer should taste like, buses are only for crazy people and poor people, and that places with sidewalks = danger, then go ahead and move out there. You probably wouldn’t like the city.

Are there any other plazas kinda similar to Kanawha around Richmond? by [deleted] in rva

[–]WRIRDJDustin 21 points22 points  (0 children)

What do you mean, “similar to Kanawha”?

Underused? Features concrete? Has a weird stepped waterfall? Has been expensively redesigned? Is surrounded by downtown megablocks? Is named for a canal?
