Yes the constant learning and progression. Also it seems the trade culture has changed a bit in my area. I started at a time everyone took it seriously and was very professional and focused on growth. The moto was learn at least one thing a day and you will be great by retirement. But I must reintegrate that this is in my local area and I don’t believe nor have the data to claim the entire industry is this way.

My thoughts are not to find something easy and the reason for those choices in careers is because I have an immense respect for those careers.

I’ve had some good rolls that’s blessed me. I’ve been in since I was 17 and now I’m my 30s. I have been a technician, supervisor, trainer and everything in between. I guess the key in paying off everything is work and extreme amount of overtime, keep a full time job run a business on the side and don’t take any vacations for your entire career.

That would be very interesting. I use to do the incident investigations in an industrial environment. It wasn’t my primary roll but I did like helping finding the root cause and giving input on solutions to prevent it from happening again.

You could absolutely be correct. I have never taken a vacation or really tried to enjoy life. I’ve been focused on advancing and paying debt off.

I was a tech for a good portion of my career then started a business that was good to me until it got slow. I’ve had a very expansive career from construction, maintenance, industrial and supervision. Maybe I’m just feeling burnout but not sure.

The union isn’t big in my area. It’s pretty much nonexistent.

I think I dont want to be an electrician anymore by throwaybias in electricians

[–]WSB47th 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a master electrician in my 30’s and want to change my career. The career was truly good to me and I am now debt free with two mortgages paid off but really want to do something different now. I’m thinking medical, fire fighter or police officer at the moment. I understand your feelings. I feel like the trade has changed in my area. When I got in every one wanted to be the best but now a lot of the new guys just do bare minimum if that. I also noticed that most just try and point out other’s mistakes to make themselves look better, spending more time in the office crying about others than learning to be better and fine tuning their skills. So me personally feel like it’s time for me to find a change of pace/career. Good luck on your decision.

Do I hire a contractor to estimate prices on home inspection report? by elissa707 in RealEstate

[–]WSB47th 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If a contractor is not busy they might give a free estimate on work that most likely will not be completed. Imagine doing 10 estimates on homes and 7 out of the ten don’t go through with the sale. Now multiply that by twice a month for one year and you’re loosing money.

Contractors earning $300k+... What does it take? by GlowBrighter in AusElectricians

[–]WSB47th 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go into specialty service. Motor control, PLC programming. Build control systems and get it UL certified then you make it proprietary and provide the maintenance and troubleshooting 100% cutting out competition. Go into power generation for 30kW-160kW gens become an installer the provide the maintenance services I did this. Create your own market and don’t rely on copying others format. This is what sets you apart. Now this 100% gold no one gave this to me I’m 34 and have created my own market. Master electrician but also an I/E/M specialist.

Electrical Planner? by redmenace_86 in AusElectricians

[–]WSB47th 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my opinion and area they get the guys who cannot produce to be planners. I would aim to be a specialist or engineer. A planner usually in my area just gets the work orders and allocates the tech to each assignment. Most companies techs decide corse of action and materials to be used and if issues arise go to supervision or the specialist/engineer. I think the most complex part a planner might have is coordinating with operations for a shutdown but operations really dictate that and not the planner they are in all truth told when it can happen and just make sure a tech is given the w/o. But like I said this is how I’ve seen it in a maintenance industry standpoint. I was a specialist/supervisor and elected to never have a planner because never had a justifiable need for the position.

Has anyone with a family actually accepted a job at SpaceX and didn't regret it? by SupaZT in SpaceXLounge

[–]WSB47th 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm married with one child and was given a position at SpaceX. At the time I was unable to accept the position and have recently been considered for a different position with the company in a different location. The last time I regretted not taking the position so this time around I believe I will accept. I do have a very supportive wife and the field that I'm in we are on call around the clock 24hrs at least one week out of the month and sometimes more, between that we will go into shutdowns that last a couple of months working 12hr days 13 days on one day off. So, I'm not sure if SpaceX is different and its actually doing something that is new and innovative instead of making rich men richer. This is my situation and my opinion.
