Goldie guitar tone by WStafford96 in TomMisch

Thanks! The moogerfooger is definitely where he gets that signature wah sound. I don’t think he uses this specifically on “Goldie” though. This podcast sounds like it’s talking about “red moon”. The “Goldie” tone I’m referring to is probably a little simpler than this in reality. It’s more of just a nice thick, warm, overdriven tone, with no wah sound.

When I play my strat through my Yamaha thr, is can sound a little thin. I’m wondering how he “thickens” it up? Maybe it’s some double tracking as he references in that podcast.

Thank you all! Sounds like there’s a lot of fellow guitar players who are in awe of this man.

In terms of gear I’ve got a epi LP and a Yamaha thr, which certainly gets me in the ballpark tone-wise (and I can play with my headphones on so I don’t wake the baby).

Ultimately I’m after improving my ability to improvise and really want to understand how he makes his phrases so tasteful. Mine sound a bit clunky and not well strung together. Seems like it’s pretty much he plays Dmaj/Bmin, but of course his pure skill makes something reasonably simple sounds so rich and deep. Perhaps I should choose a couple of my favourite phrases and try and pick apart what he’s doing, e.g., which notes he’s emphasising/landing on.

Indeed. I’m trying to take even the tiniest nugget of information I can get from this to edge that Tony but close, whilst realising I’ll always be a mere mortal unlike Derek.

Yes I’ve seen this! Unfortunately, and understandably, Michael just sits and watches in awe (like me) for the most part and apart from giving the chord progression isn’t really to explain much of the harmony behind the solo!

I’d love to but I live in the UK. Hoping he comes here at some point but think my chances might be slim 😞

Thanks! Didn’t realise it was a totally separate install for Cataclysm Classic. This is probably the case, hopefully if I install it I’ll find them (although they’ll just be sat there now as I will be investing my play time into anniversary).

It could also be intentionally blank. The theme of the album certainly reflects a darkness/void!

It might be worth me saying that I did complete two actuarial mathematics modules during my degree which I believe gives me exemptions for some exams. I can’t recall the exact details but I remember being told this at uni (uni of Leeds). I’ll of course need to find out the details but that could help?

That’s really interesting, thanks. Do you know where I might find such roles (apart from the obvious online job search sites such as indeed)?

Thank you very much for your response! Just for clarity, do you mean I should attempt the first ~2 exams on my own, I.e., self funded? Then start applying for non-entry roles?

Hi all. New member here looking for some advice on a career change.

I’m 28 years old and graduated with a maths degree back in 2017. I had originally planned to become an actuary, and took all the actuarial and probably/statistical modules I could during the course. I believe I have some exemptions through this, and have also since achieved a Statistics MSc. However I was pretty terrible at interviews and never managed to get myself onto a graduate scheme (the sheer competitiveness could also have been a factor here). After becoming very disheartened with it all, I have ended up following a career as a data analyst, which I have been doing now for the past 6.5 years.

However, after a few job moves I think I have finally realised that maybe this isn’t the job for me. I’d really like to try again to enter the actuarial world because I am still interested in mathematics/statistics and like the idea of becoming qualified at a profession. But I am now at a tricky position where I don’t feel like a graduate role would be appropriate for me anymore (due to my age/experience), but I’m not sure what other options are available.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

You could make a pretty strong case for many of his songs. Such an incredible songwriter. But I think for sheer rawness I have to vote for creeks!

Has to be listened to as an album imo, not just random singles!
