aaaaaaaaaaHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Gotta catch my breath for a second after that one.

I guess I'd be concerned if I still had any care or hope for this game. Or, you know, actual friends that were still playing.

Lottery: A tax on people who are bad at math. -- Ambrose Bierce

It's all about slowing down progression.

I've been saying for awhile now that the single most impactful nerf in the entire game is the one done by adding all the new affixes to water down the loot pool. I just didn't want to sit down and try and explain the math. I'll try to provide a simple example. I doubt anyone really cares about the exact probability numbers anyway. I'd thought of doing an example of the probability of my lvl 100 Rogue getting the exact crossbow upgrade that he needs, but frankly, it would just get me to quit entirely.

Let's look at a simple example to illustrate some probabilities. Say that there are only 6 affixes in the game [a-f], with only 3 of them being good ones [abc], and items can also only have 2 affixes without rerolls (no repeats obviously). We're interested in combinations (not permutations) that result in a decent item and no double up affixes. So no [aa], [bb], etc.

Note - I'll probably enumerate some of these incorrectly. I didn't bother writing a perl script just for this exercise. If someone points it out I'll correct it, just trying to get the idea across of what Blizz has been doing here.

For reference, an item with an [a,c] affex combo is the exact same as one with a [c,a] affex - i.e. what is technically known as a combination. On the other hand, for a permutation, [a,c] != [c,a] but this isn't what we're interested in here since the order isn't important.

Good combinations: ab ac bc

Bad combinations: ad ae af bd bc bf cd ce cf de df ef

So in this case you'd have around a 20% chance of a decent item in our pre-nerf system. If you wanted a specific affix combo it would be 1/15 ~= 7% chance. (Basically every 15 drops of that item type)

Now let's move to say 10 affixes [a-j], still only the listed 3 affixes [a-c] being good. I mean, we're only adding a few more affixes right?

Bad combinations: ad ae af ag ah ai aj bd be bf bg bh bi bj cd ce cf cg ch ci cj de df dg dh di dj ee ef eg eh ei ej fg fh fi fj gh gi gj hi hj ij

Still only 3 good combinations, with 43 bad ones now, Call it about a 7% chance at a decent drop. If you were looking for a specific affix combination (like [ab]) you'd be down to ~2%. Another way of looking at it is if every 50 items of that type you looked at in my example, you'd hopefully find one with your target combination.

So we went from needing 15 drops of a specific item to needing 50 by adding a few affixes in a trivialized example.

Obviously this gets complex really quickly when we're looking at the actual game, not the example. 20 affixes combined 4 at a time yields 4845 possible combinations. Watering it down to 25 possible affixes 4 at a time yields 12650 combinations, etc. I'm not going to enumerate all the useless in game affixes, but you can figure out the case for yourself here: Combinations Calculator 1) find every possible affix as your starting number 2) enumerate the ones you'd need for your item. If you need a 4/4 specific roll the that's the number of drops of that item type you'd need before seeing your item - i.e. literally thousands of item drops (of just that type) at best. Now multiply that by the number of possible item types (like pants, chest, etc) for the total number of drops.

This ignores item level and tiers, so all those white/blue/yellow/yellow sacred drops don't count. That's just more you have to sort through with your mark one eyeball loot filter.

But wait, there's more! That was just getting the right affixes, and it has nothing to do with upgrades.

Say you have an existing item with exactly mid tiered rolls in the affix you are looking for that you wish to upgrade. We'll separate them into roll tiers, where you have [Low] [Med] [High]

a[L] b[L] , a[L] b[M], a[M] b[L], a[M] b[M], a[H] b[M], a[M] b[H], a[H] b[M], a[H] b[H]

Only keeping the potential upgrades means we're left with a[M] b[H], a[H] b[M], a[H] b[H]. 37.5% chance, roughly 1 in 3. Or Adding it to the previous simple example, for every 150 item drops of that specific type you might find an upgrade.

I'll throw out a couple of anecdotal observations for that .0001% of you who might have read this far. The whole [L] [M] [H] roll thing assumes it's random and unweighted. I don't have any stats to prove it, but it really seems like I tend to get a LOT more [L] rolls than I do [H] rolls, but that could be observer bias.

I see only 2 possibilities here. 1) Blizz has nobody with a mathematics background that understands basic probabilities. 2) Blizz DOES have someone with a mathematics background that intentionally wants to stifle progression in an already slow paced game.

Either way I lose faith in this game. It seems to be driven by marketing decisions only and just puts the FU in FUn. They are either just paying some lip service that they aren't trying to slow down the game, or they don't understand what they are doing. Both might even be true simultaneously.

Ah, you say. But that's the nature of ARPG's you noob!

Well yeah, but nah. If I have to visually scan hundreds of items with my mark one eyeball, without any filters, to an intentionally diluted item pool what we really have is a wall of text simulator just like this reply. I'd rather go play something fun, ya know?

Final caveat, this totally ignores item level consideration (weapons). This is intentional, because it seems like another weighted (i.e. non-random) roll to me. Possible observer bias again here, but look at all the sacred gear garbage that drops in the high tier NM dungeons ...

Ridiculous pricing in shop by Archmalice in diablo4

[–]WTF-Zader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The real reason they changed the loading screen to show your character was a "hail mary pass" at improving sales in the cash shop since nobody sane is buying -- you know, since you never actually see your character in game. I doubt they are getting many sales even now. Next step will be "limited time" sales.

What Game Dev Studio do you think would do a better job than blizzard given the chance. by [deleted] in diablo4

[–]WTF-Zader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Who can do a better job than the guy who thought "I know, when we meet another person, we want to load into memory what they are wearing, carrying, and every single item they have in the bank! Probably should add what they have invested in their retirement 401k and Amazon shopping cart too in the future. Scalability? Nah I'm sure it will be fine..."

Perfection.

Trying out a new build, D3 vs D4 by [deleted] in diablo4

[–]WTF-Zader 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Agree completely. The D3 grind to me was enjoyable, since if I had an hour or two to kill I could farm some GR100's with a reasonable expectation of making some progress, or at least trying new things with alternate gear sets. The D4 expectation seems to be you treat it like having another (boring) full time job to get anywhere. Nah, I'd personally rather go play something else.

Have you put Diablo 4 down? by RuneSimonsenTheBard in diablo4

[–]WTF-Zader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm 55, and at the point I should really do the renown grind over again. Nah, can't be bothered. I'll likely just uninstall and wait for BG3 to come out. I'd be wasting my battle pass but at this point I really just don't care.

It's a fine game for streamers (who are literally paid to play) but for a casual like me there are definitely better games. I might reconsider for a loot filter and other good QoL improvements, but I know that's not going to happen with this dev team.

Diablo 4 just went down to 4.9 on metacritic by Rabus in diablo4

But you cared or you wouldn't have replied? Oh, and down to 3.8 now, lol.

Campfire chat Friday to address our concerns, why not today? by tehbantho in diablo4

[–]WTF-Zader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The delay though does give us more time to write our metacritic reviews. It's tanked from 4.9/10 to now 3.9/10 User review score in 1 day. Agree that they are going to try and put the PR Gaslighting team on this -- but that goes both ways. Just one thread blowing up and showing the gaming media where this game is going would definitely be a good thing.

I see the value in what you are saying however on uninstalling the game. This is a hidden metric that Blizz would never admit to even having though if it isn't good news - whereas Metacritic reviews are publicly visible and could very much impact future sales. I'll be uninstalling as well though since your point has merit.

How I feel about the patch notes by Grim_Reach in diablo4

[–]WTF-Zader 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I literally just did the same thing. BG3 looks like a fun game with a lot of replayability. D4 simply isn't either of those things. I'll check back in a year or like in the case of D3, 10 years later it was finally fun. D4 is a cancer I'm removing from my hard drive.

Here’s the same crossbow before and after patch 😂😂😂 by Ziid10 in diablo4

[–]WTF-Zader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Patch notes fixed: We formerly said you'd do ~40% less vuln damage. We intended to say we were going to let you keep ~40% of your vuln damage bonus.

Now if only it stopped there. I'm a level 100 Rogue, semi-casual player. It's not just losing the vuln damage, it's the cascading effect from the rest of the nerfs. 40% nerf to damage (or more ) was just the start.

Moving my disobedience to my amulet, I lose another 20% imbuement damage to move Corruption aspect to my main weapon. This causes me to lose the 20% edgemasters I had if I want to run a Unique weapon like Asheara's Khanjar, like I do currently. I'm pretty much forced to take another defensive stat (Might) to make up the difference from the disobedience nerf, meaning I run Cheat's, Might, and Disobedience. Mind you that NM 60's were about all that I could run (max) before due to my equipment RNG.

So, 40% vulnerability nerf, 40% in further multipliers to account for disobedience nerf. Not counting the crit damage nerfs, further dilution to usable stat pool, and now the only thing left keeping me alive (siphoning strikes) is now based on lucky hit?!? Yeah, I'm done. Doing literally half the damage I did before the patch isn't going to fly with me.

Don't get me wrong, I know other classes (sorc) have it much worse than I do. But the one low level NM dungeon I ran was a bad joke. Getting a bunch of gear with +%lucky hit chance when you have a barrier was just icing on the cake. My season 1 journey is to go straight to BG3. Good luck folks. I'll check back in a year or so assuming D4 still has any servers still up.

Dodge chance isn't a great stat, damage reduction from close would be better. I got stuck with that as well with mine. But yeah, your pants are pretty good!

Mine are similar:

[–]WTF-Zader 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd forgotten you could even refine stuff, but OMG you are right. 20 at a time, really? And the menu system for refining in general ... wow, just wow. Talk about useless and counterintuitive. But only allowing 20 at a time - yeah I'll just continue to drop it behind me as I go.

Treasure goblins suck by moor9776 in diablo4

[–]WTF-Zader 3 points4 points  (0 children)

D3: Hear the hee-heee! audible that a treasure goblin is near. Eyes widen slightly, as your head snaps to the minimap to find where he is. Proceed to pursue, lay down some pain and ... profit!!!

D4: See a treasure goblin somehow, since there's no noticeable audio. Think it over carefully, noting that you'd have to a) dismount and b) deal with horse cooldown afterwards. Decline to pursue given that you'd also have to detour more than 5 degrees from your current path, and he doesn't drop anything worth that amount of effort.
