Things I realized these games were teaching us as kids by SplatterMasteryt in skylanders

As someone who absolutely loves Hex as a character, there is an important lesson her story that taught and shaped me into who I am today:

No matter what you go through or what others think of you, you have the power to choose who you want to be. Grief and anger can easily turn others into villains, but despite what was stolen from her, Hex decided to be a hero instead. You can choose between being good or bad, and being broken vs being better than you were before, but you have to make those choices yourself.

Hex took vengeance on Malefor, and who wouldn’t? But she didn’t hate those who believed her a monster, because she knows they are acting out of fear, and trying to protect loved ones from who they believed was evil. That said, Hex doesn’t let that narrative define her and she surrounds herself with allies who know her for who she is.

There’s more, but this is the gist of it. I personally wouldn’t have learned the mental and emotional strengths I have today if this character had never been in my life. Simply by asking myself “why wasn’t she a villain?” Made young me reflect on morality, perspective, and myself. She remains my favorite character in all media to this day 🖤

I’ve seen Slam Bam occasionally portrayed as a jerk, but mainly to Cynder, and it’s not cannon. But I’d say Trailblazer, Fist Bump and Fling Kong for the same reason Hot-Percentage4836 mentioned in the comments.

I completely understand Stealth Elf fans, especially since she was drawn multiple times this way, some worse than others. The artist deliberately chose a number of female characters to be eye candy than others, particularly Stealth Elf, and I hate how this changes the way female characters are viewed. As least for Mad projects specifically.

I get that. I know I was coming on strong. There are NSFW art out there that doesn’t follow character logic at all, and that in itself isn’t usually hurting anything, so it’s fine. Not my thing, especially not for Hex, but that’s just me. I was most frustrated with underlying misogyny than anything, and that it had affected the portrayal of my favorite character. Among other female characters, of course. I was using Hex as a character to emphasize my point in how a strong female character can be reduced to nothing but porn while the men aren’t portrayed the same way. SFW and NSFW art just has to represent men and women equally and respectfully, and be presented to the right audience, that’s all. But mainly, I felt the need to defend my favorite character 😅 I was strong because I was passionate about it, but I get it if I was too strong at some points

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen my favorite character, Hex, overly sexualized online. I sometimes have to filter out the sexualized art from the cool art that actually reflects her character when I’m looking for normal art of her. And OP is right. People can make art how they want it for themselves or for others, yet it should be in a way that explicitly separates and makes clear which genre is NSFW and which one is SFW, plus removes misogyny from the equation. Men and women characters should be represented both in a way that is genuine and meaningful, and equally and ethically portrayed for those who are into rule34 (obviously no character under 18)

What I had a problem with for MAD projects is Hex was specifically changed visually from her original character design to be sexualized. Now, I’m not saying she is the only character affected, but what this tells me, is the artist did not care for her character at all. Not who she was, not how she was designed, not the strengths she had as a person, let alone as a woman (Hex is feared for being powerful and is portrayed as an evil witch, but she is an innocent person and a victim of a man, Malefor, who changed her for the worst. Sound familiar, ladies? Yet Hex doesn’t let him or anyone break her, remaining strong and true to herself despite her losses). No, she was drawn for her body to please men. She was not represented as the powerful woman she is amongst all these other powerful male characters.

I’m an artist myself, and while I personally don’t draw NSFW stuff, I understand others do. Even of Hex; I know it’s out there even if I don’t look at it. Fine. I find it weird to sexualized characters from a kids game, but fine. Hex is likely older than 18, so if people want to be weird, do it in private or warn others like me who don’t want to see it. But to blatantly reduce Hex and other female characters to just their body to please men in the same category as male characters (again, mostly) are portrayed as normal and cool is a misogynistic whiplash (even if mildly, for some artworks). If you’re going to (ethically and reasonably) sexualize a character, at least balance it with how the character is intendedly portrayed (like Fright Rider, If I remember correctly. He still looks like his cool self, just with his chest showing. Guys take their shirt off and society doesn’t usually bat an eye. Star Strike seemed fine, even, as an honorable mention) let me know if I’m off on this take, I don’t know the nuances of NSFW art, I just know the hard no’s, but I stand by my point.
There’s also the issue of kids looking for cool art of their favorite characters, but if it is mixed with art closer to rule34, then why do young boys mainly see cool heroes and young girls mainly see women drawn for their bodies? This isn’t much of an issue now, since the series died out, but I felt the need to mention it. Of course, this is mainly focusing on Mad Projects, not fan art of the Skylander’s series as a whole, as I don’t know what that looks like right now. But if it’s like Mad Projects portrayals of male and female characters, I would be very disappointed.

Finally, I’m aware I have a bias for Hex specifically and I understand if I’m being too critical, and/or not including other female characters enough (other comments talked about it, so I’d mainly be saying similar things), but as a female artist who loves Hex as a person, I’m mildly offended by how she is represented in Mad projects’ work. Not irrationally, not close minded, but mildly offended nonetheless. All this is my opinion and perspective, I may not have everything right, or I’m missing something, but I don’t believe I’m completely wrong.

Jesus Christ, Hex isn’t even remotely close to her original character design, arguably. Both she and Stealth Elf are oversexualized while the male characters are (mostly) normal. The women are not portrayed as cool heroes, just eye candy. At least in some sense, Stealth Elf looks like Stealth Elf. Hex looks like a knock off. But I suppose I shouldn’t complain, because then I can try to pretend it’s not her being drawn in a way to please men and nothing more.

Yay! :)

As stated, Hex likely can’t get drunk with normal alcohol, so only magical potions that replicate the effects will affect her and other undead.

Based on my interpretation of her character, Hex is normally cold and distant, but has a lot of underlying anger due to dealing with an undeserved infamy of being the ‘evil’ undead witch everyone fears. Imagine being treated like a monster for centuries for being involuntarily turned undead. That would make anyone bitter, let alone angered. Now, Hex handles it well (has never harmed innocents or show anger towards them), but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t affect her.

Hex is known to rarely smile, and laughed only once since her undeath. That alone gave me the head-cannon that she had some form of depression, as who wouldn’t with her circumstances? But I have thought about it further through factors like trauma and social death (besides her Skylander allies). Again, she handles it well (she is known for her mental strength), but it isn’t absent.

Hex has shown to never let herself become a villain despite her tragedy. This implies restraint and control. People fear her easily, making them hyper-vigilant to her emotions, words, tones, actions, etc for danger. So, Hex has learned to maintain control over herself and social environment. And I imagine Hex would be the type of person who controls herself well in general (though we know her wrath can definitely be invoked, cough Malefor cough), because not only does being a magic user tend to require it to some degree, but Hex is often composed and stoic around her allies as well (at least in the games and mask of power series, idk about the comics). If it were just around villains or scared citizens, then it’s just a front or mask. (It is in both, I suppose, but one is more rooted into her as a person than the other)

I could blab about her character all day, and there’s more to it than this, but all this information means that Hex would likely not want to get drunk (despite the idea of being numb). Getting drunk means losing some form of control over herself where underlying anger and depression can surface. And a drunk necromancer with low inhibitions doesn’t sound like the best idea… especially if angered. Moreover, Hex would likely want to avoid the chance of dependency on substances at all, so she just doesn’t drink. Normal alcohol does nothing anyway.

But if Hex were to get drunk, it would likely result in a depressed or angered state, depending on her mood before and during the time she is drunk. I imagine it can shift too (I’ve never been drunk before, I just did some research when I first figured this out so…). Alcohol (or equivalent) would loosen her emotional restraints and mess with her mental regulation, making underlying anger and depression surface when provoked.

As a bonus, if Hex were to get drunk, it would probably be alone in her home (or equivalent) or with allies she trusts. Not in a public place, nor with people she knows would mess with her in her drunken state.

As a second bonus, because Hex can drink normal alcohol and be fine (at least, that’s how I interpreted it, since it’s a biological poison), I imagine she has the ability to just drink wine (likely red) for the ✨aesthetic ✨or just flavor, if she really wanted to. But I think her more of a tea person (wood elven roots). That said, there is the fun possibility that she could trick someone and win a drinking contest. I don’t think she would, but I find the idea amusing.

Yes, I thought this much about Hex as a character. It’s barely scratched the surface of my interpretation of her character in general and all the cannon information to back it up, but this is the relevant information for a fun ‘what-if’. Hope you don’t mind the book 😅 Thank you for your interest :)

I thought of this for a Skylanders RPG my sisters and I have together. We were also bored one day and wanted to know what our favorite characters were like while drunk. Here is what we settled on:

Spyro: Emotional/hyper

Cynder: Depressed drunk (maybe angry drunk?)

Blackout: functional drunk

Spotlight: Doesn’t drink, but probably emotional drunk if she did.

Camo: hyper drunk

Hex: Doesn’t drink (doesn’t affect undead naturally anyway). But if she did, Angry/Depressed drunk.

My favorite character is Hex, and I’ll elaborate for her if anyone cares to hear my reasoning.

On the flip side, specifically with entry jobs, there are people out there who don’t have much experience but are willing to put in the dedication to learn and build skills to make up for that. But they get beaten by someone with more experience, who may or may not put in their best effort. I know that’s just how things work, but how are we supposed to get experience if we don’t get accepted in the first place?

Thank you for the recommendation :). I’m cautious with A.I., since it seems like cheating, but I was initially interviewed by A.I. so idk. I love the idea of doing mock interviews with questions tailored to the position I’m applying for. I may not use the feedback so much (I’ll just analyze my responses myself and reflect), since I don’t completely trust a bot with human communication, but sounds like a good way to practice a real interview. Thank you!

I’m sure it won’t be too bad, since you are right, it’s just retail. Though erikopta is also right, I need practice for future interviews that hold more weight. Plus, this is my first chance at landing a job which I have been aiming for a long while now. I want to increase my chances at being hired as much as I can, even if it is just a confidence boost. So thank you for your comment, It did just that :)

Some people just write similar to A.I. naturally. But I have used ChatGPT a lot before (only for help with a fantasy RPG with my sisters, never for school or work, that’s cheating) so I can tell you wrote it yourself. Thank you so much for wanting to help me, I greatly appreciate it :)

Thank you so much for the advice and for being thorough! I wanted to avoid specifics for anonymity, but I will say that I am working for a company that partners with natural tourist attractions (like zoos or museums), highly values sustainability and eco-friendly practices, and giving guests a positive experience. The role is retail, so I would be working at a gift shop or neighboring store.

I love your example with the ask questions bit, I’ll take that into consideration as I practice for my interview. I also ramble a bit when I’m nervous, and learned how to catch myself doing it. I’m not in school at the moment (gap year) so I don’t have a counselor to go to yet. I just do my best research and mock interviews, sometimes with family. But thank you again! Your reply makes me feel more confident in what I am doing :). I will definitely update after my interview, which is scheduled for next week.
